Commemoration of 75th Anniversary of the Incendiary Raid on St Nicholas’ Church

MINSTER CELBRATION 2017On Sunday 25th June, 75 years ago, St Nicholas’ Church was hit with several incendiary bombs with the result that it was gutted by the ensuing fire.  This event, which caused great sorrow in the town, is being commemorated by the Minster Preservation Trust with a series of events based on a 1940s theme
From 23rd June until 12th July 10am-3pm there will be an Exhibition of Great Yarmouth in the Second World War in the Minster.  This has been put together by the Great Yarmouth Local History and Archaeological Society.  There will also be a local schools’ project on the war to download flyer to display, please click here
On Saturday 24th June at 7.30pm in the Minster, the Jonathan Wyatt Big Band will perform with tunes from the 1940s.  Jonathan Wyatt has been leading the band for over 25 years.  His band captures the sound of the big band era.  The band has an extensive library including numbers made famous by the bands of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Count Basie, to name a few to download flyer to display, please click here
On Sunday 25th June at 11am in the Minster there will be a civic commemorative service.  This will be followed by a 1940’s Fair in the Market Place from 12 midday to 4pm.  This will involve the Dad’s Army Platoon from Thetford, a Churchill impersonator, 1940s songsters, Great Yarmouth Brass Band, vintage vehicles, many stalls, the 1949 Great Yarmouth blue bus etc. There will be a guided tour in a 1959 coach relating the history of Great Yarmouth in both world wars at 1pm and 3pm (to book a seat email: A special brew by Lacon’s to commemorate the bombing will be on sale.  There could be spam sandwiches!
On Friday 30th June at 7.30pm in the Minster the Jive Bunnies will be performing.  They specialise in Swing Jive, Lindy Hop and Balboa to the great sound of the 30's 40’s and 50's.  They have performed locally and in Munich, Cannes, Prague and Senigallia, Italy. On Saturday 1st July at 3pm in the Minster Miss Kitty Collins will sing a tribute to the 1940s and 1950s. Miss Kitty will sing your favourite songs of the era rekindling all those nostalgic memories of a bygone era.  Miss Kitty has been a professional singer all her life performing worldwide on cruise ships, theatres, corporate events, weddings, and many private functions.  Enjoy a cuppa and a piece of cake during the interval  to download flyer to display, pelase click here
The Trust has been fortunate in being awarded a Big Lottery Grant, so all these events are free of charge to attend
On Sunday 25th June at 7pm in the Minster the Holy Eucharist will be presided over by the Bishop of Norwich with organ music supported by the choir of the Horatio Singers performing Fauré’s Requiem Mass
