Unite's Prayer Update for October 2016

UNITE logo 2015Heaven and earth will pass away but my words will never pass away
 (Matthew 24 v 35)

It’s been a roller coaster of a month this month! One of our volunteers has stepped back while he recovers from illness, one has returned to university, and two more have commitments for a month, leaving us with only Ali and two volunteers for the café where we are regularly getting 20+ young people and three rooms to cover! We made the decision to call on our brothers and sisters at Norwich YFC for their support and we’re grateful that they have stepped into the breach and are sending us one of their youth workers to help staff the Youth Café every week until half term. Thank God for freeing up Andy and Angel to return for some on-off help! Thank God for Michelle, Trish and Louise for taking the plunge and visiting the café to see whether this is a ministry they can be a part of

So we start this month by thanking God again for all these amazing, committed volunteers:
John, Sadie, Joe, Livvy, Susanna, Grace, Louise, Andy, Angel, Michelle, and Trish plus Emmi and Dave from Norwich YFC

GYHSLunch times in Great Yarmouth High School have been very busy as many young people talk to Alison about all that’s good and sometimes not so good in their lives. Please continue to pray for meaningful friendships and conversations. Also thank God for the many opportunities that seem to be opening up with the possibility of assemblies and the confirmed booking of Nomad’s return in November. Nomad is the Youth for Christ touring team of footballers who take the football cage into schools and deliver lessons on self-worth, team work, living life to the full and respect, using football to make the lessons relevant to the young people. We had a great time with them last year. This year the team is made up of Beth, Beth, Josh and Shaun. Whilst they’re here they will be needing beds for the week, so if you have a spare room where they could spend four nights from 7thto 11th November please let us know (They will leave Gt Yarmouth after school on 11th). You won’t need to provide any meals other than breakfast (cereal & toast will be lovely) and they will be out of the house all day until around 7.30pm. If you have no beds but would like to contribute in some way, the team will need a meal every evening, so if you could provide one of those we would be very grateful, thank you

The young people from Stand have had a busy month with a great time at the all night celebration the Diocese of Norwich hosted at the Cathedral on 23rdSeptember. With many different methods of musical worship, some craft areas, prayer stations, cage football, inflatables and garden games in the cloisters, Norwich YFC’s “Encounter” experience, the mobile recording studio “Tracks”, Christian Aid’s thought provoking refugee zone and plenty of food and drinks on sale it was a busy but tiring night, finishing at 8am! Oh and how could we forget the headline act GuvnaB, an old favourite of Unite’s

ARMOUR OF GODWe’re proud to say we all managed to stay awake although most of us slept the day away on Saturday!  Identity’s monthly “Encounter” event in Gorleston was another way of having fellowship together with food and discussion around the table, prompted by questions based on a Bible passage. It was good to meet with the young people from Gorleston and support the Identity Youth Project

The Youth Café on a Wednesday at the Salvation Army has been growing and now we regularly have 20+ young people playing pool, cards, doing craft, baking, playing table tennis, chess, and playing games on the Wii. One of the volunteers who has been committed to the café for over a year has noticed how the young people accept her and respect her authority and commitment to them. One young person who has been coming to the café for over a year, is always cheeky and teasing everyone, actually sat and had a serious conversation last week with a volunteer about why God allows people to get cancer “Why doesn’t He just ‘sort it’?” This young lad never comes to any of the external camps/events we run and is always gently dismissive of our Christianity but after a year of building trust with him he obviously feels safe enough to question. Please pray for him

The same week a girl who has had a difficult situation to deal with at home was talking to Ali in the dinner hall at school. Ali offered to spend more time listening at the café. The girl came to the café that same day and chatted with Ali who listened and then asked whether she could pray about the situation. When the girl said yes, Ali explained what prayer is and who we are talking to when we pray, so please continue to pray for her, that she will turn to Jesus in the times she feels desperate about the situation at home. If you have an hour between 3.30 and 5 on a Wednesday and cold sit playing Uno or snakes & ladders, or could just make toast and tea we would love to hear from you as our volunteers are finding themselves stretched very thin

Again we had the privilege this month of sharing the vision of Unite with church leaders and fellow brothers and sisters at the Deanery Synod. Lots of interest and prayerful support for the work and workers in Great Yarmouth, for which we thank He who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine according to His power that is at work within us

If you would like us to visit your church to update you in person about the work of Unite, please get in touch, we’d love to come and meet you

It was a privilege to pray together with our family at the Minster and at Park Baptist Church over the last couple of months. We are trying to meet with different church families each month as we pray together rather than overloading full diaries with even more meeting times. If you could emailoffice@enyfc.co.uk with your prayer meeting dates, we would love to join you

At the trustees meeting last month we finalised the details of our recruitment programme. We are looking for two part-time youth workers to continue and expand the work of Unite so if you’d like to know more please do get in touch atoffice@enyfc.o.uk. Please pray that the right people will apply and the trustees will know who to appoint from the November interviews

Thank you for your support and we thank God for all these opportunities to be His light in these communities around us
