The streets of Bradwell were teeming with people last Saturday afternoon (10th June) as residents converged on Green Lane Playing Fields for the inaugural Bradwell Community Fete

More than 1,000 people attended the event which featured stalls from community groups and local businesses. There were also attractions such as Barton House’s ride-on railway, miniature traction engine and donkey rides, and Punch and Judy shows

The fete, which was spearheaded by St Nicholas Church, Bradwell, was opened by Lord Somerleyton and his wife, Lady Somerleyton, was one of the judges for the children’s fancy dress competition

Highlight of the programme was a combat display by the Dragon Shield Ancient Combat group who also set up an encampment at the fete and gave the opportunity for visitors to have a go at archery

Borough councillor, Carl Annison, commented “It was like years ago on Green Lane field, residents all coming together to support the event”

Co-chair of the organising committee, Rev Matthew Price of St Nicholas Church, said “We were just delighted with how the day went and the numbers of residents who turned out.  Our desire was always to provide an event where the community could celebrate all that is good about living in Bradwell.  We hope it will be the first of many!”

Since Saturday, praise for the event has been pouring into the fete’s Facebook page with one resident commenting, “There was so much to see and have a go at for all family members and an amazing amount of visitors” and another saying “It was a great afternoon and a good way of bringing the community together as it hasn't really got a centre”

Mr Price also paid tribute to the small group of congregation members from St Nicholas Church who had formed the organising committee and thanked the Parish Council for permission to use the playing fields
