We are doing cafe style church in August, mainly because we give our junior church leaders a well-earned rest.  Each housegroup/bible study group is leading the service for a week during that time, and our group decided to concentrate on Matthew 4:4 “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God shall man live

dove leftWhen you think about it, it is a very powerful thing to say.  To exist, to stay alive, we must eat.  If we don’t, we die.  Food is one of the great essentials of our lives.  Without food and water, and without air, we die.   Food is that important.  And yet here is God saying that without his word, we cannot live either.  And notice the emphasis God places on his word - “by every word”

I don’t know about you, but I forget about the every word.  I pick and choose the bits I like best, and skip over the rest.  But that’s not what God says.  He wants us to read and honour every word that proceeds from his mouth, even the bits we don’t like or don’t agree with!.  And why?  Because every word of God is pure - Psalm 12:6.  Proverbs 30:5.  His words are life and they give life

Dove rightThe amazing thing is, in the Greek original Jesus is also called Logos – The Word of God.   John 1:1 says “In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God.  All things were made through him, and without him nothing was made that has been made.  In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind”.  Jesus himself says in John 6:27 “Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that I can give you. For God the Father has sent me for this very purpose

God wants you to live, that’s why he sent Jesus.   Jesus is our spiritual food, without him, we will die. Just as you cannot live by eating one meal a year, so we cannot live without Jesus.  God offers you true bread from heaven.  The true bread is a person – the one sent by God from heaven, and he gives life to the world.  Jesus says "I am the bread of life.  No one who comes to me will ever be hungry again”.   Eat, and live
