Sunday 16th September

Heavenly Father, I find myself asking myself these questions:

when did the snake bite?
when did the poison enter in?
what was the wound?

The enemy works in this way, the snake bite is a lie, a misconception, a misunderstanding, but it causes division in marriages, in families, and in the church. Who wants this poisonous division? The enemy of course, right from the beginning, the lie causing division between Adam and Eve and You, their God and Father

The poison courses through the body; there is no part which is not affected. The truth is rejected for a lie. The lie goes from the streets into the church. And from the church into the streets. You tell us "Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister"

You also tell us "Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account.  Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you"

Father help us to spot the lie, in the marriage, in the family and in Your church. Let us come to You so You can bring healing to the wound. Rejecting the lie, the Truth will set us free. Jesus, bring us Your new Way of living, not just getting by, doing OK, surviving, but thriving, joyful abundant Life in all it's fullness, in marriages, families and in Your church. Thank You
Amen

Saturday 15th September

Heavenly Father, help me to not get caught up in the numbers game, not to worry about numbers, especially the number of people who turn up to a church service or a church meeting or a prayer meeting

I must keep reminding myself that You changed the world through one man, Jesus. He only had 12 disciples, and one of those betrayed Him. Help me to remember that You reduced Gideon's army from 32,000 to 10,000 and then to 300 so that when the battle was won You would be glorified. I must remember that You do the pruning!

Help me to forget when it seems that there are more of the enemy than us and to see the horses and chariots of fire that surround the enemy. Help me to remember if You are for us then who can be against us. Trouble, hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, or sword; You tell us that even these things will not separate us from You. Not even death, life, angels or demons, the present, the future, powers, height or depth; nothing in all creation can separate us from Your love in Jesus

Help me to remember that even if only 2 or 3 gather in Your Name, Jesus, then You are with us. You seem to turn things on their head! The more the merrier? The less the merrier! Help me to remember it really is all about You, Jesus, for Your glory and Your fame. Let us meet with You, that is all we need
Amen

Friday 14th September

Heavenly Father, I wanted to issue You a challenge a couple of days ago, in fact I did, as I prayed. I threw down the gauntlet, saying to You, "Show me what You are made of!" You immediately picked it up and gently said, "You show me what you are made of”

How much of Jesus do I have?

How much do I sacrifice?

How much love do I have?

Do I put my money where my mouth is?

Do I put myself out at all?

As I asked these questions of myself, I also heard You asking them of me. When I asked them they were angry and fearful, but when You asked them they were gentle, quiet, caring, loving. You reminded me, yet again, that without You I can do nothing, but with You, with Jesus, my sacrifice is giving You my life, I have Your love which is always enough, the riches of heaven are mine to spend on others and doing anything with You is sufficient as Your Word never comes back empty

In issuing the challenge to You, I found myself in a war of words I could never win; Your One Word was greater than any words I could offer. When a knight won his spurs...

Let faith be my shield and let joy be my steed,
against the dragons of anger, the ogres of greed;
and let me set free, with the sword of my youth,
from the castle of darkness, the power of the truth

Amen

Thursday 13th September

Heavenly Father, when the angel Gabriel visited Mary to tell her she was going have the baby Jesus her response was "I am the Lord's servant. May Your Word to me be fulfilled"

Can I say the same thing? When You come to me and tell me do something would I, do I, respond with the same words? She responded positively to the Word, and the Word became flesh and lived among us

St John tells us that he has seen the Word in the flesh, Jesus, and His glory. This was enabled by Mary being obedient, and I am sure it was costly for her in every way, throughout her life and particular in seeing Jesus on the cross

Am I ready to respond?

Am I ready for Jesus?

Am I prepared to be obedient?

Am I full of expectation?

Prepared to be put out, ready for new things?

Mary carried Jesus for nine months in the womb, waiting for His birth, and then nurtured Him and then encouraged His first miracle because she knew who He was

Am I prepared to carry Your Word for nine months, waiting for something to be fulfilled in my life, or do I abort because I am not prepared to wait?

Do I nurture Your Word, watching Jesus grow in my life, becoming flesh as You fulfil what You have come to do through me?

Am I prepared to see a miracle, a first miracle, ready to ask Jesus to do something when all seems lost, when the wine has run out?

Am I ready for Jesus to act?

Here I am waiting, abide in me I pray. Here I am, longing for You
Amen

Wednesday 12th September

Heavenly Father, we often hear people begin a discussion or a meeting by saying "First things first".  So, when I come to You, first thing this morning, I wonder what are the first things to put first (it is interesting to me that it is first ‘things’, and not first thing...)

You have given us a number of first things. First command You have given to us that we should have no other God before or apart from You. Jesus said first and foremost, I should love the Lord my God with all my heart, mind, soul, and strength. He also said seek first the Kingdom of God and everything else will fall into place and to see the Kingdom I must be born again

The Shema, the first prayer Israel prays, Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is One

Jesus said we should love one another, by this people will know we are Your disciples, Your children. Forgive, that we might be forgiven. We ask You, daily, to give us our daily bread. Pray without ceasing. The entire Law is summed up in one command, love your neighbour as yourself

Father, thank You that You have given us so much, so many first things first. Help me to remember first, that You are God and that You love me. Jesus risen, the first fruit, seen first-hand by the first witnesses, testified in the first testimonies, the gospels shows first just how much You love me. Help me to love You first, and my neighbour as I love myself. Jesus is First and Last, Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. Thank You for Jesus
Amen

Tuesday 11th September

Heavenly Father, how do I stop myself from running out of steam? Life is an uphill battle, so I need to keep up my head of steam to keep moving forward. If I run out of steam going uphill, inevitably I start to go backwards

Father how do I stop this happening? What did Jesus do to avoid running out of steam, to make sure He kept going through adversity, setting His face like flint, determined to go to Jerusalem and to the cross? How did Paul and the other apostles keep going through all the trials they had to face?

Father, the answer that comes to me is that they had fire in their belly. To get up a head of steam we need fire. Where do I get this fire?

From You?

From Jesus?

From You Spirit?

Remember my first love?

When I first came to know Jesus, to realise what He has done for me!

To be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer

Prayer! The fuel for my fire. To have what Jesus had, what the disciples had, I need to pray. Like I need oxygen to breathe, like I need oxygen to burn the fuel, I need prayer to light my fire. Without oxygen I die, the fire goes out. Without prayer my fire goes out

Father, help me to keep loading up my fire, help me to keep up a full head of steam. Give me fire in my belly to keep going forward. There is so much to do, so many who do not know Jesus, I have to pray. Help me to be faithful in prayer so I can be patient in affliction and my hope will be joyful. The whistle! Full steam ahead. Pray
Amen

Monday 10th September

Heavenly Father, You seem to like things in groups of three; sun, moon, and stars; men, women, and children; body, soul, and spirit; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; faith, hope, and love. St Paul seems to be saying that when all else fails, even prophecy, heavenly language, everything we know, our complete knowledge, all we have learned, then all that remains, all we have left are three things, faith, hope, and love.  No matter how much we may have, how much we earn or possess, ultimately it will fail us but three things will remain, faith, hope and love

When I feel that life is too hard, unbearable, a massive weight pulling me down I have three things to cling on to, faith, hope, and love. These things alone will sustain me; or will they?  Faith in what?  My own strength or abilities?  My own will power? Hope that things will simply turn around? Hope that my problems will just disappear? Hope that people who love me will get me through? Father, Son, Holy Spirit, my faith in You, my hope in You, Your love is what remains, what gets me through. Nothing can separate us

I was looking for a reality check and I found You. To get a grip on reality I find that You have a grip on me and You do not, will not let go. Jesus did not die for nothing, He died for me. This is the reality, this is what I am worth. Strengthen my faith, light up my hope, remind me of Your love. Four things at least: Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. In You I place my trust, my reality check
Amen
