Derek Mill
Worship Leader, All Saints Church, Belton

Sunday 11th November

Heavenly Father, as I walked yesterday and approached the church building in Belton I saw a rainbow, seeming almost to come from the church and spread across the sky. You tell us that the rainbow in the sky serves as a reminder that You will never again destroy the earth by flood
Thank You for this covenant and also the covenant You made with us through Jesus, the New Covenant, the New Testament, You gave us Your Word, announced by the angels in the sky at the birth of Jesus as "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace and goodwill towards men"
As we remember today those who lost their lives in war, the battle between good and evil, those who died to bring about peace, we also remember Jesus, who died to pay for our sin, so that we are no longer Your enemies but friends, at peace
Thank You that, although there seems to be constant war in the news, we who have put our trust in Jesus have the peace that passes all understanding, no matter what goes on around us
Father, help me to be a peacemaker. Wherever and whenever I can to bring hope to those in despair, not because of anything I can do, but because of what Jesus can do by His Spirit. Let justice flow like a river, righteousness like a never-ending stream. Thank You that the sword Jesus brought was not to destroy us but to destroy evil, our great enemy, and on the cross Your victory was won, death was defeated and eternal life bought for all who trust in Your promise

Saturday 10th November

Heavenly Father, thank You that I do not have to rely on good works to earn my salvation!  Thank You that I am saved by grace, Your grace entirely, shown to me in the life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus
Thank You that I do not only have Your Word in the Bible to remind me of this but Jesus fulfilled His promise and sent His Holy Spirit to us to be a living reminder, living in us to bring Life to Your Word as we read it, to speak to us as we dwell upon Your Word, to inspire us as we look to You for guidance. It is not what I do that brings me into Your Throne Room but Jesus who prays for me
My faith in Him is a gift from You, undeserved, not earned, not gained through study but by Your Revelation that Jesus is Your own Son and that He and You are one and the same, He is Your exact likeness, God in human form.
Thank You that You give my life purpose, and that life is to be to Your glory, to glorify Jesus. There are no "brownie points" to be earned by what I do, no boasting. When I do well You do not love me more. When I fail, fall, disappoint, You do not love me any less
Thank You that You have not set a bar so high that I cannot get over it, there is no bar except the One that formed the cross of Christ, the one He hung from to bring Your forgiveness to me and to the world. How deep the Father's love for us, how vast beyond all measure, that He should give His only Son to make wretch His treasure. Thank You for the price You paid for me. Jesus is my treasure in heaven and I am Yours

Friday 9th November

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are a jealous God! It seems a strange thing to pray, but this is what You tell me, it is in the Bible a number of times, and You even tell me that Your name is Jealous
Elsewhere, You also tell me that it is wrong to envy, be jealous of what others have. I know You do not contradict Yourself so I find myself asking You what is the difference? Your command to me is not to covet my neighbour's wife, nor his house or his land, nor his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything else that is his. I know the details may change but the command is right and true.  You are jealous of what is actually Your's; we are Your creation, made by You, formed in Your image and You love us
It is right for You to be a jealous God, it shows You care for and love us. Without Your jealousy other gods would try to steal us away. It was jealousy of the wrong sort that caused Cain to be angry, to seethe, to call Abel outside, to murder him and then lie about it to You "Am I my brother's keeper?"
Help me Father to have Your jealousy only, to keep only You as my God, as my Father. Let no other god enter my heart. Protect me from envy, from coveting what others have. Help me to share what I know about You, the Truth about Jesus, His love and sacrifice. Thank You that You love me so much and refuse to share me with any other god. How deep the Father's love for us, so vast, beyond all measure. You treasure Your children, including me! I am Your treasure? Wow! Thank You

Thursday 8th November

Heavenly Father, I remember the story of a man shipwrecked at sea, clinging to a piece of wreckage praying to You to be saved, when a fishing boat happens to pass by. The man says no to the offer of a rescue saying God will save him
Then a yacht passes by with the same offer; again he refuses saying God will rescue him. Then a rowing boat passes by in the middle of the vast ocean. Another refusal; eventually the man drowns.  In heaven he questions God as to why He did not save him. God says "I sent a fishing boat, a yacht and a rowing boat but you wouldn't get in!"
So often Your Way is not what we expect. You did not send a military leader, You did not send a political leader. You did not send a Messiah to destroy the Romans and raise up the people of Israel; instead You sent Your own Son, Jesus with a message of reconciliation, an offer of friendship, a proposal of adoption, but at first we refused
"God will save us!" said the religious leaders of the day and so Jesus was crucified. The healings were refuted, the miracles were questioned, the teaching was ignored, the expulsion of demons was seen as demonic and the Saviour was rejected
Thank You that You did not give up on us, that Jesus came back, resurrected by Your Spirit. Thank You that His scarred hand still reaches out, is still offered in friendship, reconciliation; we can still be adopted. As Abraham accepted the Lamb to replace Isaac and set him free, I accept Jesus, the Lamb of God, to replace me and set me free. Thank You

Wednesday 7th November

Heavenly Father, when I was a child I have to admit to the following misdemeanours:

I painted the taps pink in the washhouse;
I mixed cement in the boiler;
I buried my Dad's war medals in the soot left by the chimney sweep in the back garden;
I remember sitting on the draining board with my feet in the kitchen sink being washed down by my sisters, my brand new clothes, a bright red jacket, grey shorts thick with mud on the floor from where I had been sliding down a mud heap into a puddle below on a building site!

Apparently I was a scamp, or as my sisters would say, a terror. The strange thing is, I don't remember the punishments that surely followed; all I remember is how much my Mam and Dad loved me.  When I was a child I thought, talked and reasoned like a child; but when I became a man I put childish ways behind me... But my misdemeanours continued and became sins
Heavenly Father, thank You for my earthly parents who loved me and looked after me, forgiving me along the way. And now in my adulthood, thank You for looking after me and forgiving me along the Way
I realise how blessed I have been in both childhood and adulthood to have You looking after me, forgiving me, and that there are many who have not had good parental relationships and do not yet know You, do not know Jesus as Saviour, nor the love shown in Your forgiveness. All I can do is be thankful and pray for others to come to know this joy in relationship with You through Jesus. Help me to minister reconciliation

Tuesday 6th November

Heavenly Father, thank You that You cover me with Your wings, overshadowing me. Your faithfulness is my shield and my rampart, a wall surrounding me, protecting me
Lord Jesus, You spoke over Jerusalem, saying how You longed to gather the people under Your wings, like a hen gathers her chicks, but the people were not willing; forgive me for the times I am not willing and change my heart so I am happy, delighted to come to You
Forgive me for the times I step out from under the umbrella of Your love and find myself no longer protected but getting battered by a storm
Forgive me for wandering outside the wall You have set around me where I find the enemy waiting for me
Thank You that You do not leave me in the storm, that You do not leave me in the hands of the enemy but that You call to me, guiding me back to You, showing me the Way until I am once again under Your protection
Thank You that forgive me, sometimes I don't know what I am doing, but at other times when I am disobedient, You forgive me and come running to me as I turn back to You; a forgiving Father to a prodigal son
Dear Lord and Father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways; my foolish ways. Bless You for the depth of Your love and forgiveness. Thank You

Monday 5th November

Heavenly Father, someone said to me yesterday, as we looked at a huge poppy designed soldier, that we should remember every day of the year, not just one. I believe You would agree with that sentiment, certainly every day You tell us to remember Jesus, not only to remember Him but lay our lives down for Him
Jesus said that the greatest love a person could have was to lay down his life for his friends, and that is exactly what He did, but it was in laying down His life that He made us His friends, because it was while we were still far off He died for us. At just the right time, while we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly
Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die; but You demonstrate Your deep love for us because Jesus died for us while we were still sinners.  Thank You Father for Your great love, shown for us in Jesus. I can hardly take it in that the King of all creation was dying for my sin, and the pain and agony, and the thorns that pierced Your head, and the hardness of my sinful heart that left You there for dead
What mercy I have found, at the foot of the cross. It is right to remember every day those who laid down their lives, but in particular the One Life, Your Life, Jesus' Life, given for me, a ransom for many. As we think about the sacrifice of the many this week help us to remember always, the Sacrifice of the One, Your Son, our Saviour. With You, nothing is wasted,  Jesus, not wasted but priceless
