Sunday 16th December

Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, You told us that many false prophets would come and that we should test everything to discern the spirit behind it, holding on to what is good and rejecting every kind of evil
We know, because You have explained clearly, that we do not struggle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms
A line from a Beatles song "I should have known better...".  Just that line, applies to me, to us all; we should have known better.  St Paul warns us again, even speaking against himself  "Even if we or an angel from Heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God's curse"
Help me to remember, constantly, that You, Jesus, have told us "No one comes to the Father except through Me".  It is a One-Way street, the only Way to the Father is through Jesus, and there is no other Way, no other gospel, no alternative, not one. All roads do not lead to Rome, neither do all ways lead to God; we either stand on the cornerstone, Jesus, or stumble over it
Father, when we stand on the Stone the builders rejected, our head above the parapet, we will be shot at, the enemy will try to bring us down, help us to remember who that enemy is and with the shield of faith extinguish every arrow. Shine Your Light on everything to show its true origin and if not from You, Jesus, Holy Spirit, reject it. We do know better, we know Jesus

Saturday 15th December

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of prayer, being able to come before You every morning, or at any other time of the day or night, to speak to You and listen for Your voice. It is good to know that whatever is happening in the world, You have the plan of Salvation in Your hand
It is good to know that whatever is happening in my life, You have the plan of Salvation in Your hand. We do not live on a planet careering aimlessly through space but on a set orbit, turning on its axis so that each day the sun rises and a new day dawns
Thank You that we do not live a life without purpose but that You have, in Jesus, prepared in advance the good works You want us to do
Thank You that You have already prepared a place for me in Heaven and that the things I do between now and then are for Your glory but do not affect my destination
Thank You that, in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive Him, still the dear Christ enters in
Thank You that in prayer we hold the most powerful weapon known to man, a weapon not bent on destruction but on deliverance; not used against us but for us; not kept for the few, the ‘high and mighty’, but for all of us to know You, our Father, Almighty God, and Jesus, Your Son
Thank You that we do not wander in desolation, in isolation, but that we seek Your will with a purpose, to bring others into Your presence. Father, by Your Spirit guide me today to souls where You want Jesus to enter in
Thank You that You made me on purpose, for a purpose, to do Your will

Friday 14th December

Heavenly Father, no doubt over the coming days we will be hearing in the news about how much money has been spent in the shops and online as people buy presents in celebration of Christmas
Many will spend money they don't actually have and then spend the next year paying off the debt in readiness for next Christmas. Many will feel guilty because, even though they have gone into debt, they still could not afford what they really wanted to give to a friend, husband, wife or child
Thank You for the most precious gift I have ever received, One that cannot be estimated or overestimated, One that cannot be bought in a shop or online, One that will never wear out, break down, fade, run out of power or let me down; Your gift to me, the Ancient of Days but not an antique, old as time but as new today as ever, One I needed even though I never realised until it came to me, not an ‘it" but a ‘He’...
Thank You for Jesus, Your Son, my Saviour. Jesus, Your gift delivered, my deliverance received. Born in poverty, in a manger, yet my richest possession, the One who can never be taken away from me. No matter what I spend, I can never spend more than You did on the gift You gave to me; Salvation cost You the Life of Your Son
Heavenly Father may every gift I give be a reminder, probably only a pale reminder, of the gift You gave to me. May I find the Way to give the gift of Life and Truth to others this Christmas. It will take my whole life to unwrap the Treasure You have given. Thank You

Thursday 13th December

Heavenly Father, as I hear Christmas Carols being played and sung this year help me to hear the words as if for the very first time, the wonderful Good News that a Saviour has been born
Whether it is a cathedral choir, a Salvation Army Band, piped music in a shop, or carol singers at the door or on a street corner, help me to listen closely to the words, the message which each carol contains. Angels singing of Your birth, shepherds dashing to Bethlehem, Mary and Joseph travelling, the Star over the birthplace, wise men bringing gifts, the cry of a baby King newly born; in everything I hear help me to keep my thoughts focused on Your Son, a baby delivered so I can be delivered to You
And Father, as I sing Christmas Carols, again help me to focus on the words, to sing with all I am, my heart, my mind, my soul, help me to sing in adoration, in wonder and worship at the fact that You sent Your own Son into the world to be my Saviour
Thank You for the gift of music, of songs and singing. May each and every Christmas Carol proclaim again the central message, Immanuel! God with us. Incredible! God, with us! God for us! God in us! Holy Spirit sing in me, along with me, with the Angels, great glad tidings tell, bring comfort and joy. The greatest present? Your presence. Thank You for Christ in Christmas, at Christmas

Wednesday 12th December

Heavenly Father, one of the current TV programmes has two sections within it, one called ‘Unexpected Star of the Show’ and the other, ‘Send to All’
Despite all of the prophetic words given in the Old Testament the birth of Your Son in Bethlehem to a virgin was still unexpected, the Star over the manger leading the Magi, unexpected. A baby King, not a military leader, not born in a palace, unexpected, the King of Love my Shepherd is unexpected. But Jesus is undoubtedly the Unexpected Star of the Show, the turning point in our calendar, the turning point in our relationship with You, the Headline Act in the story of Salvation
Your Son is also the ‘Send to All’, the Word sent to all of us, the Word, Immanuel, God with us, the Word made flesh, sent to all people in all nations. In the show, the host waits for replies, just as You do, You wait for us to reply. Your texted message, scripture, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock, if anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come in and eat with them"
Father, thank You for Your text, Your Word, for Jesus, sent to all, sent to me. I open the door again and invite You and Him into my heart again. Thank You for the Unexpected Star, the bright Morning Star. Help me to proclaim the Holy Birth, send to all, be born in us today, in me today

Tuesday 11th December

Heavenly Father, as I was walking yesterday I found myself telling You "I am my own worst enemy".  Then asking You "Is this true?" It seems that most of the sins I commit are in my mind, passing thoughts that actually never come to pass
Many things are just in my mind. It is true that I am the one who chooses to have the extra food when I could do with losing weight, the extra drink when I am not thirsty. I often do not do myself any favours when it comes to my own health and wellbeing
Father, why is that? Is it because I am trying to escape from You, feeling unworthy of Your love I try to push You away by being unworthy? You told Hosea to love unfaithful Gomer, just as You loved unfaithful Israel. And so it is that You love me even when I have been unfaithful
My relationship with You is entirely dependent upon Your grace and nothing to do with my faithfulness, not of my doing but Yours. "When Israel was a child, I loved him and out of Egypt I called my son. But the more they were called the more they went away"
Lord Jesus, thank You that, even when I push You away, You do not leave me but You come back and show Your love again bringing healing to my mind and my body. "They sacrificed to the Baals... but it was I who healed them"
Holy Spirit, fill me yet again so I can know Your presence, Your strength, Your love, Your power. Lead me, not into temptation, but deliver me from evil. Especially help me to defeat my own worst enemy, my own self, as I come back to You again. Draw me close to You

Monday 10th December

Heavenly Father, I am sure that we all have Goliaths in our lives, those giants that we have to face. Every day the battle line is drawn and a voice is raised that taunts us from a distance
Sometimes it is the distant past, sometimes from someone we can no longer see but still their voice haunts us
Sometimes it is the voice of an event speaking to us that hurt us
Sometimes it is a current situation that we have no control over but seems to have control over us
The weapon formed against us seems gigantic, powerful, terrifying. Then I hear a quiet voice, Your voice:
"No weapon forged against you will prevail and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. Who is this Philistine? The Lord who rescued you from the lion and the bear will rescue you. You are not alone; open your eyes, look around you. See the hills, filled with horses and chariots of fire; the armies of the Lord. Sword, spear, javelin? Fear not, for I have redeemed you and you are mine. The Lord Almighty, Your God is for you, so who can be against you?"
Heavenly Father, sometimes it is hard to hear your voice above the taunts of my enemy, but I want to believe all I know about You and Your love for me. Help me to stand firm and at Your command, by Your Spirit sling the single stone that will defeat the Goliath I am facing today. Not by might, nor by power, but by Your Spirit will I stand. Thank You Jesus for sending Your Spirit; fill me again
