Sunday 20th January

Heavenly Father, a march may begin with the words "By the left quick march!!"  And too often we go "Right, left, right, left..."  We get off on the wrong foot

I remember an episode of Steptoe and Son when Albert, the father, teaches Harold, the son, to ballroom dance so he can enter a competition with his new girlfriend.  Unfortunately, Harold is taught all the women's steps as he danced with his dad and when he danced in the competition he and his partner, instead of dancing together, end up on opposite sides of the ballroom; he definitely got off on the wrong foot!

Sometimes it feels like I get off on the wrong foot with You and we end up out of step or we grow apart, distant. What can I do to put this right? Perhaps before the command to march I hear the word "Attention!" and I need to listen more carefully

Although I know You are more likely to draw alongside me and walk with me, like Jesus did with the men on the road to Emmaus.  King David danced with all his might before You and when criticised by Saul's daughter, Michal, he responded that he would be even more undignified as he was dancing only for You and not for Saul or her

Holy Spirit, guide my steps today so I walk in the Way of Jesus; guide me so my life is joyous in all I say and do, and even if it is undignified, may my life be a dance before You. Let's face it, dancing before You draws attention and gives an opportunity to share the amazing Good News that Jesus has ensured that we will dance on streets that are golden. Thank You
Amen

Saturday 19th January

Heavenly Father, do I live the life I pray? I worry, wonder, if the things I pray are answered? I seem to ask for so many blessings and I know You will respond, but do I fail to carry out my part?

I asked that I may invite people to meet with You but my life did not include an invitation to anyone yesterday

Did I miss the opportunity or did it happen and me not recognise it?

Is that me clutching at straws?

Did I walk straight past doors that were open into the lives of others where I could have introduced Jesus?

Were there windows of opportunity that I did not see, or worse still, I saw them but ignored them or even closed them

In my mind, in my heart, in my soul I believe I want to do what You want, to follow Your plan for my day, for my life, but it seems I have no crop to speak of; perhaps You want it this way so I do not boast or think of myself too highly

In a way, I hope this is the case, store up treasure in Heaven Jesus said! May it be that any treasure I might have is safe with You where it will not rust or fade and moths cannot destroy, thieves cannot steal

Thank You that You look after everything and I have no need to worry

Thank You that I have the treasure I need, the Pearl of greatest worth, Jesus

Bob Paisley, a former Liverpool manager said football is not about the long ball or the short ball, it is about the right ball. Help me to find the right Word at the right time in the right place to the right person guided by Your Spirit, today, tomorrow, whenever You prompt me
Amen

Friday 18th January

Heavenly Father, sometimes we receive an invitation, it may be simply for a cup of coffee or it may be to a party, a birthday celebration, a wedding. Sometimes the invitation is by word of mouth or sometimes by a card with RSVP  at the end; some are open ended, a "pop in any time" type of invitation while others need a response by a certain date.  We consider the invitation and, having checked diaries etc, respond yes or no, usually with thanks

Thank You for the invitation that You send out to people through Jesus. He invited people to follow Him, to come and see, to sit down on the hillside to listen and eat

He invited the disciple Thomas to reach out and touch the hole in His hand and in his side

Your invitation comes by Word of mouth so sometimes we hear it. Your invitation comes through the written Word, so we see it and read it. Your invitation always comes by Your Spirit, always comes to our hearts and always has RSVP even though it is an anytime invitation

What does Your invitation say? Follow Jesus. Walk with Jesus. Live with Jesus. We are invited to a blessing, given a gift. We are offered a room, not just for the night, but for eternity. We are invited to get in touch, like Thomas. Taste and see that the Lord is good

You do not offer us Your card, You offer us Your Word. You have given us Your Word to hand out, to invite others to meet Jesus, to be blessed, to receive from Him. How can people respond if they are not invited? May I pass on Your invitation today. Thank You
Amen

Thursday 17th January

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are committed to having a relationship with us

Thank You that at any time of the day or night we can pick up the prayer-phone and speak to You

Thank You that we can simply speak and know You are listening

Thank You that You even hear the murmurs of our hearts, our innermost thoughts

Thank You that our deepest longings are known to You

I know You are fully committed to our relationship, but how committed am I? Do I answer the prayer-phone when You call me at any time, day or night? Do I listen when You simply speak to me? Do I hear the murmurs of Your heart, Your innermost thoughts? Do I know Your deepest longings?

Speaking through Isaiah You said “My thoughts are not Your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts"

But then You said that, as snow and rain water the earth, the seed producing bread for us to eat, so You have sent Your Word to accomplish what You desire and it will not come back empty; He, Jesus, Your Word, the Bread of Life, does not come back empty

We have the mind of Christ! Mission accomplished: Jesus has restored our relationship. Through Jesus we know Your thoughts, Your Way. Through Your Holy Spirit we hear the murmurs of Your heart, Your groans in prayer. Jesus lived among us, and now lives in us by His Spirit, so we know Your deepest longing: relationship with us. Help me to let others know this Truth, Jesus. Thank You
Amen

Wednesday 16th January

Heavenly Father, Martin Luther King Junior said "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that".  He was echoing John's Gospel "The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it"

I got up, and the sun had disappeared, but I suppose, I expect, I know it is just behind the clouds. When the disciples woke up on the Saturday after Jesus was crucified, if they slept at all, they found the Son had disappeared, behind a stone rolled over the grave, never to be seen again... Or so they thought

When Moses was in the basket in the bed of reeds, his life was not over

When Joseph was sold as a slave, wrongly accused, in prison, his life was not over

When Elijah hid in the cave, afraid, his life was not over

Jonah in the belly of the whale, Lazarus in the grave, Simon Peter in jail, Jesus behind the stone, life was not over

Even when we face dark, uncertain days, as the song says "The sun'll come out tomorrow".  It may seem like Friday night, or a dark Saturday, but on Sunday morning the Son rises! Isaiah said "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned"

David wrote, Jesus said "Into Your hands I commit my Spirit".  Darkness does not overcome darkness, only Light does that. Hate does not overcome hate, only Love does that. We have faith, we have hope and we have love; and the greatest of these is love. Into our lives, You commit Your Spirit
Amen

Tuesday 15th January

Heavenly Father, as we enter the gift of another day, a difficult day perhaps, help us to live a life worthy of the calling we have received

We are made in Your image; it is how Jesus saw each one of us, although He also saw that Your image in us was marred, spoiled, even so He loved every one of us, as do You. Help each one of us, the lowly and those who wield power and make decisions, to be completely humble and gentle, patient and bearing with one another in love

Help us to make every effort to keep unity through Your Holy Spirit. Yours is a united Kingdom, may Your Kingdom come and Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Thank You that we are part of One Body with One Spirit and that Spirit is of one mind with You, the Father and Jesus, the Son. Thank You that You have given us one Hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father, who is over all, through all and in all

Whether we are apostles, prophets or evangelists, pastors or teachers, no matter what kind of minister we are, equip us for works of service, so that Your body is built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God so we become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ

Let us not be blown about by every wind of teaching, by cunning and crafty schemes, instead let us speak the Truth in love and grow to maturity as the Body of Christ. Bless everyone who minister's with wisdom; let us hear Your voice and know Your Way, Kingdom, power and glory
Amen

Monday 14th January

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of a brand new day. It lies before me, still wrapped, still a mystery, still a surprise to me. There are some things I know about it, an inkling, but many of which I have no clue because I never know what might happen

Throughout my day there will be many doors opened, many opportunities for good and, I dare say, for not so good; lead me not into temptation and deliver me from evil! There will be plates placed before me for which I am grateful whatever they contain; thank You for my daily Bread

I may meet people who agree with me or who upset me; may I forgive the latter instantly so I may receive the same forgiveness from You when I upset You. As my day unfolds and I find out what Life has laid before me, may I unwrap the gift You have given me to deal with it, patience, peace, love, joy, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control

As I go through each door I find You have opened, entering into someone else's life, may I bring good things that You have wrapped in the gift of this day because what You have given me is to be shared

Thank You for every word that comes from Your mouth into mine, thank You for Jesus who given everything for me and to me, thank You for Your Spirit who shows me the Way. What an incredible gift You have given me, the opportunity to see Your Kingdom, Your Power and Your Glory, today

Thank You for the mercies I find wrapped in start of the day, new every morning. May I add to His story today. Thank You for the present
Amen
