Sunday 3rd February

Heavenly Father, many people will recognise the sound "POP!!" followed by the fizz and bubbling as a bottle of champagne is opened, the clink of glasses as people offer congratulations, celebrating whatever is the cause of their rejoicing. In particular there is great rejoicing when someone is set free after being wrongly imprisoned

Thank You Father that this happens today, just as it did when Simon Peter was released by an angel as he awaited trial in Jerusalem. Perhaps the circumstances are different, the release due to a court of appeal, but the release is still quite miraculous. Holy Spirit, when You release captives, those imprisoned and tortured within their own lives, their cell being the cells of their own bodies, there is a POP!! fizz and bubble within them as You fill them with Hope, Love, and new Life

It happened one day when Simon Peter was speaking to a group of gentiles and, as he spoke, people started speaking in tongues as You filled them. We are told that Peter was astonished, and baptised them in the name of Jesus. You make no distinction between Jew and gentile, and on the day of Pentecost as Peter spoke there were people from many places, Parthians, Medes, Elamites, from Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and Rome, and they all heard You in their own languages!

Holy Spirit, help us to speak to people about Jesus, about His love and sacrifice so they hear in language they understand and then, "POP!!" fizz, bubble: released!
Amen

Saturday 2nd February

Heavenly Father, I have two thoughts going round in my head: one a verse from a song, the other a line (probably a misquote) from ‘Great Expectations’ by Charles Dickens. The song: “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost but now am found, was blind, but now, I see".  The words, at least as I remember them, from Dickens: "What larks we'll have Pip! What larks!"

There is no doubt in my mind that the grace You have shown me is absolutely amazing, that I was certainly lost and without hope and could see no way to redeem myself or make myself worthy of being Your servant, and most certainly not Your friend, nor Your child. That I could be a child of the Creator of the universe was beyond comprehension, and yet, here I am, in Your presence, adopted into Your family, Your child, no longer lost, no longer wandering aimlessly, but found, redeemed, no longer a wretch but now Your child, a friend of Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords, an heir to the Kingdom.  Wow! That is truly amazing. And I hear Your voice saying to me "What larks we'll have, what larks!"

The joy that is expressed in those words, that we will have such fun together, such great times. Jesus said "As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Now remain in My love... I have told you this so My joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete"

Holy Spirit, fill me again so that my joy will be complete, today and forever, and what larks we'll have, what larks! Amazing grace every day
 Amen

Friday 1st February

Heavenly Father, why do I qualify my prayers? When I add a qualification to something I put a limit on it, for instance "I will see you tomorrow at 8:00am unless I am called into work".  The ‘unless’ is the qualification. The qualification brings in an element of doubt, an alternative to what has been stated

Lord Jesus, when You spoke You did not add any qualification at all. You said "I will do whatever you ask in My name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask Me for anything in My Name, and I will do it"

At another time You said " You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you may go and bear fruit - fruit that will last - and so that whatever you ask in My Name the Father will give you".  There are other occasions when You said similar things

Is the phrase "...in My Name..." a qualification? Do I use it as an excuse to pre-empt the possibility that the Father will not answer and thus the doubt I have shows my lack of faith. Even You could not do many miracles in Your home town as there was little faith

Father, I think that when Jesus said "in My Name" He meant it to be with His authority, His power, His permission, unqualified, unlimited, without restrictions

Lord Jesus, You said "All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples"

You also said "Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, drive out demons"

Holy Spirit, strengthen my faith so I will see the greater things. Thank You
Amen

Thursday 31st January

Heavenly Father, as I go into another day, I hope it will be an unqualified success. It seems strange that we use the word unqualified to mean it will be a complete and total success, but I guess it means without restrictions, without limits

When a person is qualified it generally means they have passed some sort of exam so they have permission to do a particular job, an accountant or a doctor for example, but it also means that the accountant would not usually practise medicine

Father, what would make today an unqualified success in Your eyes? Would it be that I do as I please, without restrictions or limits? I don't think so, that would most likely be disastrous!

Do I ask that You guide me, work through me, light my path, fill me with Your Spirit, fill my mouth with Your words, take me where You want me to go?  There is no limit to what You can achieve, there are no restrictions on Your power, other than that which You choose to apply. Nothing is impossible for You!

The only restrictions placed on Jesus when He walked the earth were those placed upon Him by You, restricted to time and space; but now, those restrictions and limitations have been removed. Now You pour out Your Spirit on all flesh, sons and daughters prophesy, old men dream dreams, young men have visions, Your servants both men and women are filled with Your Spirit. Because of Jesus I am qualified, so my day can be an unqualified success. I am not qualified by a piece of paper, but by Your Holy Spirit. Father, have a great day!
Amen

Wednesday 30th January

Heavenly Father, how do we stop history repeating itself? I think, guess, the answer is simple: do something different?

Perhaps the Samaritan woman who met Jesus at the well, who had had five husbands and the man she was then living with was not her husband, perhaps she met them all at the well? Perhaps that is why she went there at noon, every day? Perhaps Jesus did something different; He did not take advantage of her? I am guessing, but certainly something different happened that day

Perhaps it is not enough to simply try, try, try again? Perhaps we must try something different each time we try again; or was that the mistake the woman made at the well each time, a different man each time to solve her problems? Perhaps she, and I, need to BE different?

The Bible tells me I must put off my old self, corrupted by deceitful desires, and put on the new self, a new attitude, created by You in true righteousness and holiness; is that what she did that day, with Jesus there with her?

I must put off falsehood and speak Truth, as Jesus did to her? Those who steal must stop stealing, do something different, something useful and share with others. No unwholesome talk, only that which builds up others. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander; instead be kind and compassionate and forgive as You have forgiven me through Jesus

Father, by Your Spirit, strengthen my resolve to do something different, more than that, to BE different. Simple? Yes. Easy? No. Create in me a new heart
Amen

Tuesday 29th January

Heavenly Father, I asked You on Sunday afternoon as I walked "Lord is there anything You want to do tonight?"

I believe You answered me "There will be people there who think I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. Just as I had the Asherah poles destroyed so I have destroyed bargepoles. My arms nailed wide on the cross are now free and held wide open to welcome and hold those who think themselves unworthy. Those struggling to break habits with smoking, alcohol, drugs, and pornography. Those who have been abused and see themselves as soiled goods. I will be there to meet them and minister to them"

Father I know there are people who, metaphorically, beat themselves up, condemn themselves because they have been made to feel unworthy, can find nothing good to say about themselves and live in despair. There are also people who literally beat themselves up, punching their own faces. People who harm themselves, cut themselves, destroy themselves through drink and drugs. Those who allow themselves to be mistreated by their partners, blaming themselves because for whatever reason they believe the lie and think they deserve it. And all think that You wouldn't touch them with a bargepole

Lord Jesus, You came to seek and save the lost, to draw near to, sit with, and put Your loving arms around any and all who need to be reassured of Your love, to have a fresh start, to be set free from whatever binds them. Your holy fire consumes the sin but leaves the person whole. Help me to be holy and love like You
Amen

Monday 28th January

Heavenly Father, thank You that we can have Communion with You, with Jesus, by Your Holy Spirit

Thank You that You have given us Communion in church as a permanent and constant reminder that Jesus' body and blood were given in sacrifice for us

Thank You that any time we eat or drink we can say grace, a prayer of thanks inwardly or outwardly, and remember the grace You have shown us

Thank You that every time I eat bread I can remember that Jesus is the Bread of Life, the Word made flesh, and that I need the Word that comes from Your mouth

Thank You that every time I drink water I can remember that Jesus has given us Living Water, springing up in us to flow from us

Thank You that Jesus turned water into wine, that as He shared wine with the disciples He described it as His blood, poured out for us for the forgiveness of sins

Lord Jesus, thank You that Your blood flowed from Your body, that it now flows through Your body, the Church

You have told us that the Life is in the blood and that it is Your blood which keeps the Church alive; it is the Way You keep the Church alive, it is this Truth that keeps the Church alive, it is the Life that is in Your Church

Thank You that Your Word is alive and active, sharper than a double-edged sword and that You judge the thoughts and attitudes of my heart

Thank You that by Your Holy Spirit You can guide the thoughts and attitudes of my heart

Thank You that every time the sun rises I can remember that the Son has risen and that the Truth has dawned in me
Amen
