Sunday 10th February

Heavenly Father, thank You that You care about my wellbeing. I love that phrase! Wellbeing, not well-doing, but wellbeing.  When someone asks me, "How are you?", the best response I can give is "I am well." Not "I am doing" (which would be weird). Not "I am busy" or "Not bad", but "I am well"

Being well not only means I am healthy but that my being, my humanness, my humanity is well. My relationships are well, my spirit, my soul, my heart is well (not the blood pump, but the heart that loves), and my strength is well.  Most of all my being is with You, with Jesus, with Holy Spirit. Your Living Water is springing up in me, as Jesus said, welling up to eternal life

Thank You that my well is being constantly filled by You, by Your Spirit, by Your steady stream. You are my Good Shepherd and You lead me by still waters, into green pastures, refreshing my soul so goodness, mercy, love follow me all the days of my life

Thank You that You are like a garden fountain, a well of flowing water streaming down; thank You that I can draw water from the well of Salvation

Lord Jesus, You said "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, rivers of Living Water will flow from within them".  Lord, let Your Living Water flow, over my soul and out from me

Holy Spirit, come and guide me so I am not anxious but, in every situation, by prayer and petition I can present my requests to my Father. May I never quench the Spirit, but let the Spirit quench my thirst, and that of others. Well
Amen

Saturday 9th February

Heavenly Father, if You rested on the seventh day, and You included resting on the seventh day in Your list of ten commandments, even setting it in stone, then I suppose there is a good reason for rest

When Jesus had finished His work on earth, He ascended to Heaven and sat down at the right hand of the Father. Jesus told us "Come to me all who are heavily laden (weary and burdened) and I will give you rest".  Not energy, power, strength, or more determination, but rest

But, strangely enough, after we have received rest, really rested, switched off from everything that we struggle with, including work and all of life's other problems, including family and helping others with their problems, we find we not only have energy, power, strength and determination but we are invigorated and are enabled by You to achieve not only far more, but far more worthwhile things

Father, help me to rest in Your presence, I am called to BE 24/7 not to DO 24/7. As a human being I can rest, as a human doing I become exhausted and the joy can be sucked out of life. The Westminster Catechism starts by stating "Man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever".  Glorious joy. Not to work, work, work but to glorify and enjoy. Help me to enjoy You!

Do I even know how to do that? Where do I begin? Perhaps by sitting down. By stopping what I have been doing for six days and being different, being busy doing nothing, trying to find lots of things not to do! Joy, enjoy, enable. Seek You first, the rest will be added
Amen

Friday 8th February

Heavenly Father, a phrase sometimes used today, a modern parlance, often abrupt, biting, unsympathetic, is "Get over it!"

Life can often be quite brutal, placing obstacles in our way which cause us to despair and sometimes to feel like giving up; perhaps this was how Jesus felt as He prayed in the garden of Gethsemane the night before His crucifixion? Under so much stress He sweated blood. "Father, if You are willing, take this cup from me; yet not My will but Yours be done"

His response of, "not my will but Yours be done..." opened the Way for Him to get over it, and opened the Way for me to get over it too. The obstacle in His Way, the cross. The obstacle in my way, my own selfishness, my sin, a mountain I could not hope to move, blocking my path to You, blocking my vision so I could not see You, stopping my ears so I could not hear You, my hard heart unable to love You

When Jesus offered forgiveness from the cross all obstacles were removed, the Way was cleared, I could see and I could hear and I knew how much You love me. Johnny Kidd and the Pirates sang "I'll never get over you..." and it is true, I will never get over how much You love me, how much You paid to remove the obstacles in my way, I'll never get over You

Jesus crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but really Your power and wisdom displayed for all to see, for me to see. I either stumble, or stand on, the Rock of Jesus and I choose to stand. Thank You, I can see clearly now the rain has gone
Amen

Thursday 7th February

Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible gift of memory You have given us

I watched a fantastic concert last night where folk musicians played for a couple of hours, all sorts of music and songs, some of it incredibly fast and intricate, all from memory

I have also seen classical musicians who play wonderful concertos from memory, even an orchestra that plays symphonies from memory

Rock musicians also play whole concerts without music to prompt them

Actors on stage have to learn their lines, although we sometimes hear of some who have the words written on their hands, their sleeves and so on

I know there are some people who have memorised every chapter and verse of the Bible

I know my memory is not that good so I regularly have to check that what I think You said, and what Jesus said, is actually what You or He did say. I also write things down that I want to remember, things I think You said to me and things other people say that You resonate within me by Your Spirit

Thank You that I am able to remember that I do not have a good memory! You told the people of Israel to talk to their children about Your commands when sitting down, walking along the road, tucking them in bed; write them on your head and arm and on your doorpost. It seems we can remember incredibly complex things, like music, but we so easily forget the ten things You told us which would keep us close to You, even to the point where we forget about You altogether! Help me to remember what I need, when I need it. Your Word
Amen

Wednesday 6th February

Heavenly Father, Abraham Lincoln reportedly said " You can fool all of the people some of the time and you can fool some of the people all of the time but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time"

Is this what I try to do, fool all of the people all of the time into thinking I am something I am not? Do I even try to fool You into believing I am something I am not?

I remember, I think, Val Doonican telling of his father saying to him shortly before he died something like "Son, a lot of people will tell you after I am dead what an awful, wicked man I have been. Well it is true. So when they come to you and say this about me, you can say 'Yes, I know. He told me so before he died'"

In a similar vein Father, I come before You each day and need Your forgiveness for everything I have done wrong, knowing I am in no way perfect, and have a long way to go to become the person You want me to be, the person I am meant to be

Lord Jesus, the disciples were with You for three years, listening to You, talking with You, watching everything You did and You did not fool all of them all of the time because everything they saw and heard was good and true; they knew that You are, most definitely, the Way, the Truth and the Life

The enemy may come and accuse me, but I can say "God knows everything about me, including what you say, and it may even be true! But because of what Jesus accomplished on the cross I am forgiven, washed clean by Jesus' blood and have a fresh start today".  Thank You Father, Jesus
 Amen

Tuesday 5th February

Heavenly Father, the song from yesterday stuck in my mind at times throughout the day "It's not how you start it's how you finish" and it made me think of Jesus. How could He start in a stable and end up on the cross?  But then I got to thinking that His life did not end on the cross, nor did it end in the grave

Father thank You that Jesus continued His life, continues His life, after the cross and after the grave, resurrected, alive forever

Thank You that the Bible is totally honest about His resurrection and our hope, as You clearly tell us that if Christ has not been raised then our hope is futile, but that the Truth is that He has been raised to new Life and everyone who believes in Him will be raised too

The enemy would have us believe that all we have is this life so grab what we can while we can, but Jesus shows that there more to life than this life, much more. Thank Father, thank You Jesus, that You have not left us alone to ponder on this, but that You are with us today!

Holy Spirit, thank You that You are here now, as we pray together. Your promise that You would finish the good work You started in us is shown by Your presence in us today. Jesus promised to send another, exactly the same as Him, and it is You, Holy Spirit! Alive in us today and the seal on our relationship

Forgive me for the times I wander, thinking that this is all there is. Thank You for the reminders You give us that this life is only the start and we will finish in Heaven with You, Father, Son and Holy Spirit
Amen

Monday 4th February

Heavenly Father, there is a song which begins with the line "It's not how you start, it's how you finish..." Thank You that this is true of our relationship with You

As high as the heavens are above the earth so great is Your love for us, as far as the east is from the west have You removed our sins from us. You have promised that You will finish the good work You have started in us. You tell us You have a crown of righteousness waiting for us when we finish the race, not looking back but looking forward, reaching out towards the prize

Jesus told of two sons, sent to work in a father's vineyard; one said he would go but didn't, one said he wouldn't, but did. It's not how you start but how you finish

The Apostle Paul, persecutor of Christ and of Christians, writer of much of the New Testament, and the one who led many souls to Christ, it wasn't how he started but how he finished

Fishermen who became fishers of men

All of us who were far off, but now know You through Jesus, by the power of Your Holy Spirit are now poles apart from where we were, not only as far as the east is from the west, but as far as the north is from the south

Father, I know I am still a work in progress, not perfect, but You are still at work in me, day by day, little by little transforming me so I am no longer what I was but becoming more what I was always meant to be and am going to be, made in Your image. Help me to get to the point where I can echo St. Paul's words it is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me
 Amen
