Worship Leader, All Saints Church, Belton
Easter Sunday 21st April
Heavenly Father, thank You for Resurrection Day! The day You rolled the stone away from the entrance to the grave where Jesus lay dead and raised Him to life; the day that changed everything
Thank You that because of Jesus' death and Resurrection the stone that was rolled over my heart, keeping me dead in my sins, has also been rolled away, my sins are gone, I've been set free, my Mighty Saviour has rescued me from sin and death! And like a flood, Your mercy flows
Lord Jesus, I lift Your Name on high
You came from Heaven to earth, my debt to pay
From the earth to the cross,
from cross to the grave,
from the grave to the sky;
Lord I lift Your Name on high
Thank You that the Bread of Life has removed the crust that covered my heart and fed me with Bread so that I never need to hunger again, given me Living Water so that I no longer thirst
Thank You Jesus that You met with Mary Magdalene, eleven disciples, and 500 others as Living proof that You have conquered death and because of this fact I too have been raised to new life, more than a conqueror, an heir to the Kingdom
Thank You that, as a child of God, You have given me a key, a key to the Kingdom! Heaven is no longer locked to me; I know I can enter when the time comes. I am no longer bound, the chains are off, and I am welcomed into Your presence. All glory, praise and honour to You, Jesus, Redeemer, King. Your death has given me a fresh hope, eternal life. What else can I say? I worship You in Spirit and Truth. Thank You!
Saturday 20th April
Heavenly Father, so often I hear myself say, and so often I hear other people say, "I have read that a hundred times, a thousand times, but this is the first time I saw what it meant!" (or words to that effect)
It seems that You constantly reveal new things to us as we read the Bible or hear it read to us. There seems to be layer after layer of meaning to be discovered as we uncover the riches of Your grace in the scriptures. I guess it also explains why everyone hears different things but the same words spoken by a preacher; somehow You underline certain words, make some stand out bold, others are in italics, underlined!
On the day of Pentecost, people heard the words spoken in their own languages, thus accusing the disciples of being drunk. While it is true that being drunk can lead people to open up and speak the truth, more often they speak gobbledegook, but when do they ever speak fluent Greek, Spanish, Urdu, and Chinese? The answer is never, to the best of my knowledge; although this has been reported to have happened under the influence of Your Holy Spirit
Your Word is alive and active. Jesus is Your Word. Jesus is alive and active. The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God, Your Word. The Word became flesh and lived among us, we have read about His glory, seen His glory. We tried to silence the Word, kill the Word; we thought we had killed the Word, nailed Him to the cross, but, the Word of the Lord endures forever! Resurrection Day awaits us! Jesus, alive forever, has saved us. Thank You
Good Friday 19th April
Heavenly Father, it is quite incredible how film makers are able to create special effects that look so real. A huge gorilla climbing the Empire State Building, vast armies marching on great cities, the appearance of a man aged from a youth to an old man within no time at all. Amazing prosthetics and computer generated images create what appears so real but is false, a facade, not real
Jesus on the cross was Your Special Effect for the world but it was entirely real, played out in real time, no fake blood, no prosthetics, no pretence, no cutting away to miss any of the real action
Lord Jesus, the rough wooden cross was real, the jagged spikes driven through Your wrists were real, the sharp thorns of the crown digging into Your head were real, the gasping for breath, the pain and agony, not only of being crucified, but of being separated from Your Father in Heaven for the first time in eternity was real
The sins of the world, including mine, heaped on Your shoulders, were real, disfiguring You beyond description, adding to Your suffering. No special effects at all, all real, but a very Special Effect: forgiveness, spoken from the cross. Sin paid for on the cross. Reconciliation with our Father in Heaven established at the cross. Healing flowing from Your wounds. The Love of God for us, for me, shown on that one day in reality, in real time, the Truth, the Way, the Life. And the continuing Special Effect, the gift of Your Holy Spirit, alive in us today. Truth is greater than fiction! Thank You
Maundy Thursday 18th April
Heavenly Father, I live in the natural world, the world of natural things, the world of substance, the world of cause and effect, the world where death is inevitable, the world where a person's worth is usually measured by what they have, by what they earn
When someone dies, especially rich people, it is reported what they left behind, often in monetary terms, as well as family heirs. A rich young man went away sad because what he had physically, his money, was more important than following Jesus. You exist in a totally different world, You are supernatural. Lord Jesus, You came into the natural world, the world of nature, bringing with You the power of the supernatural world from which You came. You told us "What is impossible with man is possible with God"
You are the creator of all things, seen and unseen, You are above all things. I have a soul, but I cannot see it. I see physical things, I trust in things that are substantial, that I can get my hands on! You trusted in something You could not see, Your Father in Heaven; You trusted entirely in the power of prayer
With You, nothing was impossible, is impossible, You always did something, always do something, healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, strength to useless limbs, hearing to the deaf, raising the dead, feeding the hungry, even 5000. How do we measure what You are worth? What did You leave behind, Your legacy? You gave us Your Spirit, the supernatural power of Heaven. Help me to trust in things I cannot see; to trust You
Wednesday 17th April
Heavenly Father, You always have a greater plan!
Who would have thought that a baby born in a small town about 2019 years ago could still be remembered today, this very morning, by millions of people all over the world?
Who would have thought that the focus of the world would be two pieces of wood, shaped in the form of a cross, and that millions of people would have the cross as a symbol in their homes and even round their necks?
Who would have thought that a simple supper, a bit of bread and a cup of wine, would be celebrated by Mass congregations of people every week, every day, for over 2000 years?
Who would have thought that the crucifixion of an apparent nobody, no home, no money, no status, would be remembered by millions on a Friday, every year?
Who would have thought that the dead Man, nailed scarred hands and feet, His side pierced by a Roman spear, buried in a borrowed tomb, would be walking and talking to Mary Magdalene, to eleven disciples in a locked room, to 500 people a few days later?
You told us all this would happen! Jesus Himself basically said "Wait. I'll be back!". Your plan was much greater than a baby in Bethlehem, a supper in an upper room, a cross on a hill, a crucifixion. Your plan was Resurrection and Salvation
This is why Notre Dame Cathedral was built, and will be rebuilt; not as a tourist attraction, but so that those who worship Jesus can return with thousands more beside to say "Thank You for the cross, for Jesus, for Salvation". Who would have thought it, but You?
Tuesday 16th April
Heavenly Father, I prayed a few days ago about how things happen which are quite incomprehensible, the fire at Notre Dame is such a happening
It is not the first great fire; the Great Fire of London swept through the city lasting for four days, in September 1666. From then on, London has been rebuilding and is still rebuilding today. Buildings have been built, destroyed and rebuilt. No doubt Paris will be the same and Notre Dame Cathedral will be rebuilt, as was Coventry Cathedral
We have sung a song at church, many years ago, written by the youth, and still a watchword today: "The Church is not the building, it's the people"
Lord Jesus, You wept at the death of Lazarus, a person whom You raised from the dead. You cried out "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings and you were not willing". You were crying out for the people, not the buildings
The disciples commented to You, as You left the Temple in Jerusalem, "Look Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!" You replied "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down". And that Temple was destroyed
Father, I am sure Your heart goes out to the people of Paris, it is people You care about. You tell us "The Word of the Lord stands forever". Help us to rebuild broken lives, lives that will last forever; it is why You came. Thank You
Monday 15th April
Heavenly Father, it seems that love and redemption go hand in hand
Yesterday I was praying about heroes and another character in a film came into my mind, a heroine, Vivian in the film "Pretty Woman". A prostitute who saves a rich man
Lord Jesus, Rahab the prostitute is listed in Your ancestors and a woman who had "lived a sinful life", probably a prostitute, washed Your feet with her tears, dried them with her hair and anointed You with expensive perfume from an alabaster jar
Mary Magdalene, who had 7 demons cast out of her by You, was at the cross when You were crucified and was one of the first at the tomb on the third day, the first to see You resurrected
The Samaritan woman You met at the well had five husbands and was then living with another man, not her husband, but You showed her compassion and through Your conversation with her many others came to believe
It is recorded that You were asked why You ate and drank with sinners and tax collectors and You replied "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice'. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners"
Thank You, that, like Your Father in Heaven, You are compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. Father, in the film Vivian saves Edward because she loves him, not because of what he gives her, not because of what she is, but because love, compassion and redemption go hand in hand. Thank You for Your grace and mercy
