Sunday 5th May

Heavenly Father, thank You for my latest breath. From my first breath to my latest breath, You have known me, and will know me until I breathe my last

Thank You for the beat of my heart, the regular rhythm that sends blood around my body, the circulation that enables me to live

Thank You that You have installed in me, in people, an autonomic nervous system so my body runs itself and I do not have to think about every movement and every function to keep myself alive

We soon know when something is not working properly or if something shuts down, when life is threatened. For some, each breath is a struggle, for some each heartbeat is painful, for some each day brings a visit to a machine to help them survive another day. For some finding food to sustain their life is a battle, and for some, broken, fractured relationships make every day joyless, even loveless. This was not Your intention, and is still not Your intention; Jesus came so that we might have Life in all fullness

Father, Jesus' Resurrection is the proof we need to authenticate everything He said, to give credence to Your Word

Lord Jesus, You told us to come to You when we are struggling with heavy burdens, weary, and You will give us rest for our souls

Thank You that I do not have to face today alone, that Your promise is fulfilled and that You and Your Father, my God, have come to live in me by the presence of Your Holy Spirit

Thank You for the Hope You bring, Eternal Life is on offer, starting today! Breathe in me breath of God
Amen

Saturday 4th May

Heavenly Father, we are made in Your image, so are meant to bear all the hallmarks of You; Your characteristics, Your mannerisms, Your behaviour, Your creativity, Your love, Your righteousness, Your purity

Gold, silver and platinum are measured for their purity and marked in carats and given a hallmark to indicate the quality. There can be little doubt that men have often lusted after gold, silver, platinum, jewels, money, being prepared to cheat, steal, and even kill to get their hands on it. This passion is even talked of in the Bible: "The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil".  You say we cannot serve two masters, we will hate one and love the other, we cannot love both You and money

While it is true that we need money, we need You far more; it is You we should love, You we should worship, and You we should pursue. How far have we fallen? Do we bear Your Hallmark? Am I like You? Am I like Your Son? Am I like Jesus? When people look at me do they see His characteristics, mannerisms, behaviour, creativity, His love, righteousness, and purity? Do I bring healing, forgiveness, joy wherever I go? Do I offer my life to others in service, am I prepared to go the extra mile or do I not even lift a finger to help  those in need

The standard confession? "Father, forgive me, for I have sinned". Jesus’ response to the worst of sinners "Go, and sin no more". From the cross "Father forgive them, they don't know what they are doing".  Sin, missing the mark, the Hallmark. Help me to be like Jesus
Amen

Friday 3rd May

Heavenly Father, how do I worship You? I made a list of the ways I might worship You, but it got a bit muddled with how I might support a football team or idolise a superstar musician or film star!

  • kneeling down

  • singing songs

  • saying nice things about You

  • thinking about You

  • looking forward to meeting You one day

  • dressing like You

  • trying to look like You

  • doing things like You

  • wanting success for You

  • wearing ‘the scarf’ or in Your case, the cross

  • wanting to meet You

  • collecting memorabilia, pictures on the wall

  • remembering great games, actions, miracles, great victories, especially winning from a losing position, like coming back from the dead!

  • join a fan club

  • meet with others who also worship You

  • reading books about You

  • wanting to be like Jesus!

In football, when the team isn't good enough, we criticise, boo, walk away, leave the stadium and in extremes crucify the team, metaphorically, throw away the Season Ticket!!

Father I want to worship You in the Way You want; Jesus said it must be in Spirit and Truth. Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, do not quench the Spirit, do not treat prophecies with contempt, but test them all, holding on to what is good and rejecting evil. And You sanctify me! You bring me peace. You make my whole spirit, soul and body blameless; Lord Jesus, You are faithful and will do it! How do I worship You? All of the above! Thank You for coming back from the dead, sorry about the crucifixion! My Season Ticket, meeting with You every day. Thank You
Amen

Thursday 2nd May

Heavenly Father, thank You that years ago You encouraged me to keep toilets clean! I found this has helped me a lot, so thank You! I have to admit that I am sometimes quite ashamed of the way some of my fellow males leave toilets in a dreadful state, so I grab the toilet brush and clean them, whenever I can. Sometimes it is hard work to remove the remains, but if it is fresh it is usually much easier

What a weird thing to be talking to You about, but You made us so You know all about it! I suppose what I am really thinking about is any sin in my life, which is why I am so thankful about toilet cleaning. It is much better to confess quickly, apologise quickly, clean up any resulting mess quickly when I have done or said something wrong. Leaving things to fester, becoming bitter, hard hearted, encrusted makes it much harder to deal with and sometimes it becomes almost impossible to redeem the situation

When it is someone else who has messed up, it is much better to forgive quickly, again so things don't fester, build resentment and it becomes easy to see the other person as the enemy

I know it was incredibly hard for Jesus to come and clean up the mess we had made. After years of not flushing our sin away, thinking we were above the Law, believing we were clean, but we were so bad that we were dead in our sins, You came to deal with the problem. Being told time and time again to clean up hadn't worked so when Jesus confronted us we crucified Him. Help me to keep my life clean daily! Thank You
Amen

Wednesday 1st May

Heavenly Father, I sometimes wonder if being a Christian makes one iota of difference to me.  Does it affect my day in any way at all? Do the decisions I make truly reflect the love of Christ, Your love in my heart, or do I do what I would do if I had never met Jesus?

Forgive me for discarding the Robe of Righteousness You give, the Garments of Praise, instead putting on the soiled clothes of selfishness, self-righteousness, donning the cape and the mask of deception, trying to fool everyone

Forgive me for only being happy because everything is going my way, rather than being joyous despite things not going my way

  • Conviction - a strongly held belief often expressed in a sentence

  •

  • Conviction - a sentence passed down after being found guilty of a crime

  • A Life sentence - a sentence which brings Life in all its fullness, freedom from condemnation, Hope! Your Word, Jesus

  •

  • A life sentence - a sentence which brings prison, a cell, a locked door, a loss of freedom, condemnation, despair

Father, which do I have today? Am I convicted by Your Spirit, accepting Your Word as Truth, accepting Your Way, accepting Your Spirit so I can be set free from condemnation and have Life? Or do I believe the accuser, the enemy, satan, who would condemn me to a living death?

I choose Life, I choose Jesus, I choose the Cross of Christ, His forgiveness; all my sin and shame is taken from me at the Cross. I confess I was guilty but now I confess Christ, Saviour, Redeemer. I cannot hide from the Truth; You know me completely
Amen

Tuesday 30th April

Heavenly Father, I am sure many of us remember the line from the DC Comics "Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's..." Let's face it, in the real world, the answer is not "No, it's Superman!" The answer is "Yes. It's a bird; a sparrow I think".  Or a plane, but whether it is a bird or a plane, neither of which I could identify, I know it is not a man flying!  And one thing is for certain, it is not me flying!

And yet, I wonder how many of us have this secret persona? Hidden away in us? We don the cape, don the mask (designed to keep our real identity secret), and Super-Christian appears. Not when an emergency occurs, simply in a panic because someone has knocked at the door

When Nathanael was brought to Jesus, Jesus said "Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit".  Nathanael asked "How do you know me?" Jesus answered "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you".  Nathanael declared "Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel!"

Father, how I would like to be like Nathanael, so You would say of me, "In him there is no deceit".  Too often the cape and mask are used, not a case of "what you see is what you get".  How does such a facade build up? Where are these strongholds built? All around me. In my mind. In the image I have allowed to be built up around me!

Father forgive me for trying to fool all of the people all of the time, and for trying even to fool You. Make me transparent, vulnerable, real. Ordinary-man with a Supernatural God
Amen

Monday 29th April

Heavenly Father, it seems that the disciple Thomas gets a particularly "bad press" when it comes to the Resurrection of Jesus, even to the point of becoming Doubting Thomas. Yet the other disciples didn't believe that Jesus was alive either, they also doubted

The Bible tells us that when Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, along with some other women, came back from the tomb having seen Jesus alive, "they (the disciples) did not believe the women, because their words seemed like nonsense to them"

I am fairly sure that when the disciples told Thomas that Jesus had appeared to them in the upper room he roared with laughter! I see him laughing so much and saying to the others "You're having a laugh! You think you can fool me. Ha-ha, well the laugh's on you!! Unless I see the holes in His hands and the hole in His side I won't believe. Take me fool would you! Hah".  Or something like that

Father, You know I believe Jesus was raised from the dead, resurrected, but it is a very hard thing to believe, of course it is! Even though Jesus explained to the disciples exactly what was going to happen to Him, the Bible tells us "The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what He was talking about"

Lord Jesus, when I think about the Resurrection, talk with people about You being raised from the dead, fill me with Your Spirit so that all doubt is removed from me and I will know that Jesus is alive. Holy Spirit, confirm the Truth in me
Amen
