Worship Leader, All Saints Church, Belton
Sunday 19th May
Heavenly Father, thank You for coming to meet us. You did not make this too difficult for us or beyond our reach
You did not ask us to ascend to heaven to meet You
You have not asked us to cross an ocean to come to see and hear You
You did not ask us to meet You half way, instead You did everything, coming from Heaven to earth and basically saying "I AM just a God standing in front of a mortal asking You to love Me"
You made Yourself nothing, taking the nature of a servant, washing our feet, giving of Yourself. You made Yourself vulnerable, open to us, like us, but still God
You did not defend Yourself but instead, because of Your great love for us, You gave Yourself up for us, taking our place, taking the punishment that should have been ours; should have been mine
You did not command us to worship You with all our heart, soul, mind and strength; Jesus said we should LOVE You with all our heart, soul, mind and strength
Without thinking about the fact You are omnipresent, omniscient, not thinking about what You have created, Your awesome power, not thinking about Your miraculous acts, nor Your ability to create something out of nothing, but just because You love me, I love You
I am just a mere mortal, standing in front of an awesome God, asking You to love me too, already knowing that You do, simply because You came to find me, You came to seek and save the lost and You found me
Thank You for Your great love in Jesus. Looking forward to spending eternity with You, including today
Saturday 18th May
Heavenly Father, I believe You said to me as I woke up "We are all in the same boat". I asked You "Who's 'we'?" And You said "You, Me, and everybody else"
Everyone has set sail on the Ship of Life! I know I have prayed about being in the boat before, but usually it was either just You and me or the disciples, You, and me, but this time it seems it is everyone?
Usually I have prayed about being in storms or casting nets, sometimes about Jesus walking on the water, but this is the first time I thought about "We are all in the same boat". If we are all in the same boat, are we all safe? And Your answer?
I think You showed me that some people know You are in the boat but prefer to leave Jesus sleeping
There are also many who want to throw Jesus out of the boat, although that is not possible
There are some who want to be captain and decide the course of their lives, setting sail in their own "lifeboat" out into a vast ocean with no compass, no moral compass, perhaps looking to the stars, their horoscope, to guide them; prodigals, taking their share and living a life on the ocean wave
Then storms come, difficulties, problems, huge waves that threaten to sink the little lifeboats. But with Jesus awake the Ship of Life is safe, even in the storm. Your hand can reach out to anyone, even those who have gone off on their own, bringing them back so we are again, all in the same boat
Lord Jesus, may I be quick to waken You, make You Captain, setting the course of my life. One God, one Captain, one boat
Friday 17th May
Heavenly Father, thank You for making life as simple as possible! Did I just think that? Did I just pray that? Do I mean that?
We often see written in a set of instructions for a product we have just bought, or a gift we have been given, "For best results follow the maker's instructions". Your instructions? One God, no idols, no "God-swearing", take a day off, honour Mum and Dad, no murder, no adultery, no stealing, no lying, and no coveting. As the Meerkats say, "Simples!"
Why do we make life more complicated than it needs to be? Why do I make it more complicated than it needs to be!? You explain it so simply, sin. You tell us "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?"
How easily we deceive ourselves, other gods creep in; we find ourselves devoting our time to other things, putting them before You, spending time and money on them, instead of spending time with You. When Jesus prayed from the cross "Father forgive them, they don't know what they are doing", I wonder if He meant not only the crucifixion, but life in general; lost in the world without the Maker's instructions
There is a great deal written these days about mental health, including self-harming; I wonder if we all self-harm, inflict pain and suffering on ourselves by choosing to go our own way, rather than Your Way, following Your instructions, Your Word. Jesus said "Follow Me"
Lord Jesus, let me follow in Your footsteps, keeping it simple. Guide me in thought and word and deed. Thank You
Thursday 16th May
Heavenly Father, the Bible refers to pure gold being "as transparent as glass". 24 carat gold is the best we can get and it is malleable; an ounce of gold can be beaten into a sheet covering a hundred square feet, or can easily be bent and shaped
You tell us to come near to you, to wash our hands, and purify our hearts. The Psalmist tells us that he loves Your commands more than gold, more than pure gold
Help me Father to be transparent; help me to be pure, even though it may mean going through Your Refiner's Fire
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego went into a fiery furnace, heated seven times hotter than usual because they would not worship the false gods of King Nebuchadnezzar or bow to a gold image he set up. I guess no-one wants to go through a fire, but if we do it is always best if You are with us, as You were in the fiery furnace, the Son of Man; "Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods"
There are many false gods, gold is a very real temptation in the form of money, wealth, riches, but You tell us not to bow down. Only You are worthy of our worship: Jesus Your Son is worthy because He is You, in the form of a man. I join with angels to declare "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and praise!"
Purify my heart, may it be as gold, pure gold. Refiner's fire, my heart's one desire is to be holy; set apart for You, Lord. Ready to do Your will. Thank You
Wednesday 15th May
Heavenly Father, I remember when, in my teenage years, I would copy out whole sections of books or plays to help me remember the content ready for exams. For me it was a good way to study and it seemed to work! I suppose it is not too surprising as it is Your idea!!
You told the kings of Israel "When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and turn from the law to the right or to the left. Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel"
Joshua told the people of Israel "Keep this book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful"
And Paul wrote to Timothy "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work"
Father, help me to not merely listen to or read Your Word, and so deceive myself; help me to do what it says. I know I need Your Holy Spirit to strengthen my resolve, to guide me and keep me on the right path, so I read from the Scripture Scroll and do what it says, just like Jesus
Tuesday 14th May
Heavenly Father, thank You that there is always so much to learn, to understand, to see in the world that shows us Your glory
Over the last couple of days I have learnt a new hymn, actually an old hymn, but new to me, and a new rock song, again old, but new to me
Thank You that there are friends who share their insights so You open our eyes to new wonders every day
The hymn starts "When we walk with the Lord in the Light of His Word, what a glory He sheds on our Way; While we do His good will, He abides with us still and with all who will trust and obey. Trust and obey, for there's no other Way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey"
The rock song is by Eric Clapton and begins "Standing at the crossroads, trying to read the signs to tell me which way I should go to find the answer, and all the time I know, plant your love and let it grow. Let it grow, let it grow, let it blossom, let it flow, in the sun, the rain, the snow, love is lovely, let it grow"
Trust and obey, plant your love and let it grow; Father help me to do this, to trust You, to obey Your will and follow Your command and Your commission, to love You, my Lord and God, with all my heart and soul, mind and strength, and to love my neighbour as I love myself, to go into the world to make disciples. How? Plant Your Love and let it grow
Lord Jesus, You have shown us how to do this, loving all who came to You. Help me to do this too, trusting that You are with us to the end of the age, let me plant Your Love and watch it grow
Monday 13th May
Heavenly Father, thank You for the wondrous gift of life contained in each seed. In plants, trees, animals You have created the seeds from which everything grows. Everything required is there, lying dormant until the right circumstances prevail
Who told the root that it must go down, who told the stem that it must reach upwards, who told the sperm to seek the egg? You did!! Life in all its forms is truly miraculous; for all creation there is a creator. In the beginning You created the heavens and the earth
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the Light of all mankind. All things seek the light to grow, whether from the soil or the womb eventually, when the time is right, the light becomes the aim
Thank You that from Your incredibly varied imagination all things have their being, and in particular for us, human beings, we are made in Your image. But we are told "Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil"
Lord Jesus, Light of the world, forgive me for staying in the dark, thank You for shining Your Light and enabling me to see the emptiness of life without You. Thank You that in Your Light I can grow, develop, thrive. As we meet people today help us to plant a Seed of Truth about Jesus; let that Seed germinate and move towards the Light, to Jesus until new Life appears
