Sunday 14th July

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word, the Bible, alive and active, sharper than a double-edged sword; thank You that it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; thank You that it judges the thoughts and attitudes of my heart

Thank You for Your Word, Jesus, alive and active, sharper than a double-edged sword. Thank You Lord Jesus that You meet with us, even separating my soul and my spirit, to speak to me through Your Spirit. Thank You that You care for me, body, mind, and spirit. Thank You that You judge my thoughts and attitudes, deep in my heart to check my motives. Without the right motivation I will receive nothing, achieve nothing

In Your written Word, depending on the version, charity and love are the same. I can speak well, know everything, give everything, but without charity, without love, it gains me nothing

Father, if I give, let it be with love, with charity. Let me never seek a reward, even to the point where my left hand does not know what my right hand is doing. A verse in a song we sing "I will not boast in anything, no gifts, no power, no wisdom, but I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection"

Thank You for all those who work for charity, in love. Thank You for all who minister in Your Name, in love. Fill me with Your Spirit, Your love so that my motivation will be charity, love. Sometimes people say "I'm not a charity case!"  But I suspect we are all charity cases, every one of us relying on Your charity, Your love shown in Jesus. Thank You
Amen

Saturday 13th July

Heavenly Father, when a company needs some new ideas or a team of some sort has become stale, we use the expression it needs 'new blood' or 'fresh blood'.  The person added brings fresh ideas, enthusiasm and energy

Lord Jesus, when You came You brought fresh blood, new blood, pure blood.  Your ideas rocked the established order of things, rocked the world and continue to do so.  A number of times You said "You have heard it said... but I say..."  Each time You raised the bar, brought a new level of purity, a new meaning to a phrase, a deeper understanding

The people who heard You speak were amazed because you spoke with authority, which is not surprising as You are the Author of Life.  When You came people had become set in their ways, ritual and repetition, meaningless sacrifices, and insincere words

You brought a new Way because You are the Way

You brought Truth because You are the Truth

You brought life because are the Life

You brought an end to meaningless sacrifice because You are the Final Sacrifice

You brought an end to ritual and repetition, insincere words, because You are the Word who became flesh; Your mercies are new, different, every morning

Holy Spirit remind me always of the "but I say" words of Jesus.  Remind me that the new blood, the blood of Jesus, did more than bring fresh ideas, it brought new Life, forgiveness of sins, established a new relationship.  Cain asked "Am I my brother's keeper?”  You said "I AM the Good Shepherd", our keeper, the Saviour of our souls. Thank You
Amen

Friday 12th July

Heavenly Father, there are two short phrases which I often hear, and say, understandably so, as life's problems pile up on, and over, people. "If it's not one thing, it's another". And "There's just been one thing after another!"

I know Jesus said in this life we would have troubles, but sometimes I think we just want to cry out "Give me a break!"  So many sayings, and it is easy to be trite and think that a few words will fix everything. It is said "Time is a great healer" but I don't believe this

Father, You are the Great Healer!  But sometimes it does take time. In the midst of the troubles, in the mayhem that can be life, while the storms rage and there seems to be no end, just one thing after another, there is a peace, a peace that passes ALL understanding

Jesus did not say things that were trite, simply for effect, sticking plasters on gaping wounds.  "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you.  I do not give as the world gives.  Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid"

St Paul knew this peace, saying "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus"

Time may run out, but You never do. At the end of the day, the bottom line, ultimately, You are with us. Peace. Thank You
 Amen

Thursday 11th July

Heavenly Father, help me to keep my focus on Jesus as the centre of my worship. There are so many other things, good things, that may become the focus and therefore idols. The church can become my focus, my denomination a division between people

Lord Jesus, the church must help me to see You, not replace You; help me to understand You, help me to worship You. Help me to keep You as the focus of my worship

The liturgy should help me to see You, hear from You, but must not become the object of my worship. The liturgy is a vehicle which must lift You, so I can see You

Help me to remember that the cross is not my focus, it is You, the One on the cross who is to be worshipped

Just as the bronze serpent which had been put on a pole, so people would be saved when they looked at it, had become an idol and had to be broken by Hezekiah, so I must make sure nothing takes the place of drawing near to You

Help me to keep You as my focus; the Bible tells me all about You so let it serve You, opening my eyes and my ears, my heart, to You as You speak through it. I may study the scriptures diligently, and they speak of You, but if I do not come to You they will do me no good

Father, the whole of creation speaks of You but must not become the object of my worship, worshipping the creation rather than the Creator, again, does me no good at all

Father, Jesus, Holy Spirit, One God, let everything point to You, act as a reminder of You. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Only You Lord can satisfy
Amen

Wednesday 10th July

Heavenly Father, I feel I want to pray for all those who live with the threat of the unknown. Obviously, that is everyone as we can never be certain what any particular day will bring, but what I mean is those who are under threat from an illness, never sure whether the next set of test results will bring good news or signal something less positive

And those whose relationships are stretched to breaking point through mistrust or betrayal, even violence

And those whose loved ones work in environments that are constantly under pressure, under threat

Whether people are worried for themselves or for others, life can lose its appeal; lose its sense of purpose, even hope

Father, You are the God of all hope, in You there is always hope because, with You, life has its beginning and its end, which is no end really as You have come to live with us and in us

Jesus has brought the hope of Eternal Life, and has proved He has authority, even over death, that He is the Resurrection and the Life, having risen from the dead and ascended to sit at Your right hand

Holy Spirit, bring reassurance to those who are at the end of their tether; an interesting phrase, those without an anchor. The old hymn springs to mind: Will your anchor hold in the storms of life? You always hold us firm, promising You will not lose one of us. What a promise! We are anchored to Jesus, we are safe in the storms, no matter what threatens us, no matter what the day brings. Jesus says "Hold on. I AM right here". Thank You
Amen

Tuesday 9th July

Heavenly Father, thank You for another opportunity to pray, another time to meet with You

I read a little while ago that prayer does not change things, and I found myself agreeing because people may pray to anyone, for anything, any god, even a block of wood!  What is important is who we pray to and why!

Prayer does not change anything.  You, Father God, Creator of Heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the Father of Jesus, the God who is Holy, who is Spirit, it is You who changes things when we pray

Prayer is not the answer; You are the answer

Prayer is not the key; You are the key

Prayer will not move the mountain; You will move the mountain

Prayer will not tear down the stronghold; You will tear down the stronghold

It is absolutely vital that we pray! It is also absolutely vital that we pray to You, the One True God who always hears us and that we pray with the right motive: Love.  James tells us "When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives..."

Holy Spirit, purify my heart so I may pray with the Love of Jesus. Cleanse me from all unrighteousness so I may pray with the Love of Jesus

Father, fill me with Your Spirit, the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, that I may pray empowered by and guided by Your Love.  I often do not know what to pray, but You know

Holy Spirit, help me in my weakness, when I do not know what to pray, intercede for me, even in wordless groans.  Search my heart and let Your will be done
Amen

Monday 8th July

Heavenly Father, thank You that when we want to talk with You we do not need to sit in a waiting room, stand in a queue, make an appointment, or wait for a letter.  Access to You, to Your throne room is instant, constant, 24/7 as we say these days

Whether it is an upcoming event in my life that I want to ask You about, something that has happened, something I have done, something I am worried about, or simply wanting to spend time with You, You never tell me to come back later, that You are too busy at the moment, that You will be with me as soon as possible; no, You are there waiting for me, eager to listen, ready to help, alongside me, fully focused with a 'do not disturb' sign

I realise that the answers You give, the actions You take, will take time because I live in time and often the situation is not that simple, but I know that even before I speak You are already at work, taking steps on my behalf. I know that You leave no stone unturned because You have already turned over the stone that was covering Jesus' grave, setting Him free and enabling this conversation to take place through the Holy Spirit

Anyway, I just want to thank You, to say that I am grateful for all that You have done for me, all that You are doing for me and all that You will do in the future.  It can't have been easy for You to see Jesus suffering, in agony on the cross, dead in the grave, and all for the benefit of people like me, and all because of people  like me

Thank You that I can talk to You, worship You, my great Dad
Amen
