Sunday 13th October

Heavenly Father, Jesus came to meet You in the Garden of Gethsemane and prayed earnestly, prostrating Himself on the ground before You, saying "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as You will".  He prayed "Abba Father, everything is possible for You. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what You will"
And it is also recorded in the Bible "Father, if You are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but Yours be done".  Knowing what He was about to face, crucifixion, the agony of the cross, Jesus asked You if it were possible to do things differently, but it seems there was no other Way
An angel came to strengthen Him, so He could get through what was coming. Under so much pressure and stress we are told Jesus sweated blood, now recognised as a very rare medical condition, called 'hematidrosis', that causes blood to ooze or sweat from the skin
St Paul said "I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the Law, Christ died for nothing".  It is not how much money I put on the plate that saves me, it is not how often I go to church, it is not how many times I tell people about Jesus, it is not how often I pray; I am saved by Your grace, through Christ on the cross. If there was any way out, Jesus would have taken it, but there wasn't
"The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me".  I choose to accept the One-Way ticket, there is no other Way

Saturday 12th October

Lord Jesus, when You hung on the cross, You said to one of the two criminals who were crucified next to You "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise".  Even in those last few moments of Your life on earth, in the greatest agony, Your compassion for those suffering is evident, even one suffering for what he had done wrong
You emphasised, even on the cross, that You were speaking the truth; You could do nothing else as You are the Truth.  Not only did You tell the criminal he would be with You but You asked Your Father in Heaven to forgive those who had put You on the cross.  Your love for us is so great that even as You died on the cross You were thinking, not of Yourself, but, of us.  Thank You, there is nothing else I can say but, thank You
There is nothing recorded about what You said to the other criminal, the one who hurled insults at You, the one who said "Aren't You the Messiah?  Save Yourself and us!".  I can only surmise that You didn't say anything, but that he was included in those who You said did not know what they were doing
Father, I would have been one of those who mocked and jeered, one of those who hurled insults, until that day I met You, the day that for me, changed everything.  Knowing what You did, what You did for me, taking the punishment that should have been mine is mind blowing! Recognising myself as one who should have been on the cross, but instead You have set me free is simply incomprehensible, too much; but it is the Truth, by Your blood I am freed.  Thank You

Friday 11th October

Heavenly Father, it is strange how one sentence can mean two totally different, even opposite, things.  "Nothing is too much trouble" seems to be one of them. Does it mean that even lifting a finger is too much hassle and I can't be bothered to move an inch to help. Or does it mean I will do anything and everything I can to help, nothing will stop me helping in whatever way I can
It certainly seems that the second of those interpretations is Your attitude, nothing could stop You from fulfilling the mission You set Yourself in coming to the earth as our Saviour Jesus;

You came from Heaven to earth to show the Way, that didn't stop You;
Born of a virgin; that didn't stop You;
Being tempted in the desert when You were tired, weak and hungry; that didn't stop You;
Being mocked, jeered, spat upon; that didn't stop You;
Being taken to trial, falsely accused, lied about, beaten with thirty nine lashes; that didn't stop You;
Being dragged through the streets, carrying a heavy wooden cross; that didn't stop You;
Having nails hammered through Your hands and feet, being hung on a cross, crucified, a spear thrust into Your side; that didn't stop You;
Being dead, buried in a borrowed tomb; even that didn't stop You!

For You, our loving Heavenly Father, nothing was or is too much trouble. Nothing, no thing and no-one can separate us from Your love in Christ Jesus.  You have moved Heaven and earth to save us. Father, let nothing be too much trouble for me as I tell others of Your great love for us. Thank You

Thursday 10th October

Heavenly Father, it is so easy to fall into a 'when and then' mentality; "when a certain thing happens then I will..." The classic examples include "When I retire then..." and "When I win the lottery then...". I guess another, perhaps less familiar but possibly hidden away in our minds is about You, "When I am older, then I will think about God"
Father, I want to be thinking about You now, today, right now as I meet with You in prayer.  I want to know You today, to hear Your voice, to know Your thoughts and Your desires.  I want to follow Your lead today, to have Your Word in my mouth and on my lip
 'When' may not come, tomorrow may not arrive, and 'then' it will be too late.  In the same way, it is not right to have an "I'm alright Jack" mentality, leaving Your mission until another day; when I have time then I will tell people about Jesus.  Your Word says "I tell you, now is the time of God's favour, now is the day of salvation"
Open my eyes, open my heart, and open my mouth so I may speak as You want me to.  You tell us to circumcise our hearts and do not be stiff-necked any longer, to soften our hearts, to cut away the hard crust
Help me Father, soften my heart so I am not hard-hearted.  Help me to realise what You have planned for me, to make what You have said into reality.  I know I am safe in Your arms, but there are many who do not know Jesus, who need to hear the Word of Life.  Even when I am I am at deaths door, then I will still tell of Your love. And today I will do the same. Show me the Way

Wednesday 9th October

Heavenly Father, Most of us will recognise the phrase "Emergency; which service do you require?"  We may have actually dialled (there's a word we don't often use these days!) dialled 999, or we may have just heard the words on a TV programme or film. Fire, Police, or Ambulance are the three services that spring to mind
The fourth service is nowadays usually the coastguard, and I guess the fifth would be the AA or RAC or Greenflag, the breakdown people. Or, perhaps when people have a breakdown they call the Samaritans?
Like the 'Good Samaritan' in the story Jesus told, people who give of themselves to others to help in a time of need, a listening ear. And when all else fails, people pray; they turn to You.  "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging".  You are always with us!
 Jesus is the first emergency service, even though we may need to dial 999, we can be praying even before we reach the phone. You douse the fire of fear, you stop the enemy stealing our peace, you heal our wounded hearts and souls, you get us back on the road to recovery, and like the 'Good Samaritan' you pay for everything. Just as we put our car in for a service we need to put our souls in for a service, not just a Sunday service, an everyday service where we meet with You.  The only oil we need is the oil of Your anointing

Tuesday 8th October

Heavenly Father, thank You for my home, my work, and my food. For some, home will be a few rooms in 'one wing' of a huge mansion. For most of us it will be a more modest house by comparison, while for some home will be provided by others, or the night sky will be the only roof over their head. One thing is certain, You are the Father who loves each one of us, no matter what our circumstances
For some, work will be producing a healthy, wealthy income where money is of little consequence as it simply accrues in the bank while the worker sits at the desk. Most of us get up every day and have to work hard, toiling the hours to make ends meet to be able to pay the bills each week. For others work is hard to come by and bills aren't paid as there is no address to send them too. For some, the few, food is a matter of courses; three, four or five courses cooked by chefs employed to provide the meals
For many of us, most perhaps, food is a matter of course, cooked by our own hand in our own kitchen. For others food is a matter of what is given or even found, or perhaps there is no food. You are the God who loves each one of us
For some the future is now in the past, time has come and gone and the end is nearer than the beginning. For others, the future lies ahead, an undiscovered country with life an adventure, as yet to be explored. Or, perhaps, a life to be endured in poverty
Father, Jesus died for every one of us.  Help me to show others, rich or poor, the Way, the Truth, and the Life before it is too late

Monday 7th October

Heavenly Father, it is really difficult to live life when we know people are telling lies about us; it is even harder when we know those lies are being believed; but it is even harder still if we start to believe those lies ourselves
I know I can't do anything about what other people say, and I can't do anything about what other people believe but I can do something about what I believe; I can come to You to let my heart be changed, renewed, flowing from the grace that I've found in You
Lord, You can renew my mind, remove the guilt and the shame because You have paid for it all on the cross.  Just as I would not dream of going back to Tesco to pay again for what was paid for yesterday, so I will not revisit the past to pay again for that which You have already paid; especially for things which I did not carry out of the shop!
The lies can be replaced by the Truth, so I let You take the lies and shred them and give me a clean slate; Your Truth tells me I am a new creation, no more in condemnation, here, in the grace of God, I stand
Because of Your great love, pouring into me, my love just keeps on growing, my heart is overflowing, because I stand in Your presence, receiving Your grace, mercy, and favour.  There is NO condemnation for me, because Christ is in me, and therefore, I have the hope of glory!  And what a hope that is, eternal and unshakable
Father, I choose to send the lies back to satan, the father of all lies: return to sender, You know his address, I refuse to accept anything posted by him
