Daily Share-a-Prayer w/e 24/11/2019

Sunday 24th November

Heavenly Father, many people have to have regular health checks, some monthly, some annually. The trip to the dentist every few months can be a bittersweet experience as the hope of a clean bill of health can be swept away with news of required treatment

In Your love for us, You invite us to have a regular spirit check with You; You meet with us to monitor the state of our heart, mind and soul. Your check-up is not monthly, every six months or annually, but daily as we pray, weekly as we gather in Your presence

We may hope for a clean bill of health, but sometimes (most-times?) there is need of required treatment! In fact, if we say we have nothing wrong with us we are just fooling ourselves, the truth is not in us, but if we come to You, You are faithful and just and cleanse us from all that is wrong

Just as a dentist may carry out treatment, clean our teeth, and recommend regular brushing and flossing, You take away our sin, give us biblical guidance and recommend what we need to do to live a good, healthy spiritual life, indeed a good life in every aspect

Your concern for us meant that the cost of Your treatment, forgiveness, was paid by Jesus. You may prescribe something I need but unless I pick up Your prescription and act upon it, it will do me no good. Everything You suggest is for my own good, even when there is a bitter pill to swallow

Thank You for Your constant, unfailing love. Help me to love You with all my heart, soul, mind and strength and my neighbours in the same Way. Thank You
Amen

Saturday 23rd November

Heavenly Father, You tell us the most excellent Way, how to live a life worth living. The best things in life are truly free! "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.  But the greatest of these is love".  The greatest things we have are intangible; we cannot see faith, we cannot see hope, and we cannot see love.  We cannot buy faith, we cannot buy hope, and we cannot buy love

Thank You for faith. We are saved by grace! You tell us "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not works, so that no one can boast".  I could do nothing to get myself in Your 'good books'.  I rely totally on Your grace, shown to me by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, Your only Son

Thank You for the hope I have found in Jesus; I now know that this life is not all there is, there is so much more.  Eternity waits for me!  You tell us "The creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed".  What a hope I have found in Jesus. Our hope does not put us to shame, because Your love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us

Thank You for the love You have shown us; how can it ever be measured?  It will take all eternity to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Jesus.  Faith, hope, and love; invisible, like You, but clearly seen in Jesus.  What a great God and Father You are, the Greatest!  And the greatest of these is love, Your love, Jesus. Thank You
Amen

Friday 22nd November

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your grace and mercy. Thank You that You can do such things that, even though they are impossible for me, they are not impossible for You!  You proclaim to us "See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland"

Even though the future may look bleak, You offer fresh hope to all who put their trust in You, in Jesus and Your Holy Spirit. I may have done things wrong, and even done my best to do what is right, but You have a better plan. You warn us "All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away".  But You take our filthy rags and wash them in the blood of Jesus, You wash them as white as snow by the water of the Holy Spirit so they are holy and useful to You

You tell us "Come let us settle the matter. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool".  Who would believe it possible, but when Jesus comes "the wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together, and a little child will lead them".  And even now, You are doing great things through Your Holy Spirit here at work in our lives

Father, help me to trust You. I give you what I have, to cleanse and use as You wish; not my will but Yours be done; not my way, but Your Way
Amen

Thursday 21st November

Heavenly Father, here I am again! Thank You that I can be here, with You, the most important part of any day. Thank You that it is not only now that I can be with You but always. When You say to us "I will never leave you nor forsake you", You mean it!

When Jesus said "Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age", He meant it and means it still. When Jesus said He would send another Advocate, The Holy Spirit, he meant it and He has done it!

Father, thank You once again for inviting me into Your family. Thank You that Your Spirit brings reassurance, calms all my fears and guides me throughout the day. You told Joshua "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them (the enemy), for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you"

I do not have to face a physical enemy today, but there are many enemies that will try to assault me in my mind; worry, doubt, fear, trepidation, guilt, shame, to name a few. But You reassure me, You have dealt with all of my enemies, even telling me You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies and that my cup overflows!

King David wrote "The Lord is my light and my salvation - whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life - of whom shall I be afraid?" Nothing can separate us; not trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword; not worry, doubt, fear, trepidation, guilt, or shame. You have overcome it all; even death. Thank You. What a great Father You are!
Amen

Wednesday 20th November

Heavenly Father, I find myself praying about praying, about prayer:

How many prayers have You answered?

Do I ask for anything?
Am I specific? Specific enough?
Too general?
Are my prayers too selfish?
Do my prayers allow You to work?
Do I tell You what to do?
Do I limit Your response to my limitations? My imagination? "What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived - the things God has prepared for those who love Him..."
Do I allow time for You to answer?
Am I of little faith?

You tell us that when Jesus went to His hometown, Nazareth, "He did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith".  Are my 'good ideas' not Your good ideas? I know Your thoughts are higher than my thoughts, Your ways higher than mine, because You tell me "My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are my ways your ways" declares the Lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts"

Am I looking for a reward? Am I looking for glory? You tell us "You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures"

Father, it is true that I have a little list, actually a long list, of miracles I would love to see happen, and it is just between You and me.  I ask You to do whatever You want to do and wait to see it happen.  May all glory go to You.  As Manuel says in Fawlty Towers "I know norrrthing!" Over to You
Amen

Tuesday 19th November

Heavenly Father, I have a fairly well established routine each morning, obviously with slight variations. Most days I get up early, do what is necessary after a night's sleep, go downstairs, put the kettle on, make a coffee, sit down ready to read my devotionals and Your Word, and then start to listen and pray

In amongst all of this, at some point, I will take the four pills prescribed by my doctor; I am not sure if they actually keep me alive or just healthier than I may be, but each day I pop them into my mouth and swallow; each one is a bitter pill to swallow

There are many difficult things in the Bible, some hard to believe, some difficult to understand, some we may prefer not to be there, but we are told "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work"

We may prefer only to read the New Testament and ignore the Old, but Jesus said "Do not think I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them".  Lord Jesus, You obviously had great respect for the Old Testament and regularly quoted from it, often clarifying it, making clear what it meant, and often upsetting the religious leaders of the day

Father help me to take it all on board, whether You are teaching me, rebuking me, correcting me, or training me in righteousness; help me to be equipped. In all things You are working for my good, even the bitter pills
Amen

Monday 18th November

Heavenly Father, thank You for the time I was able to spend with my family this weekend.  In particular, thank You for the time I spent with my youngest granddaughter, early each morning

Even as I thank You I am aware of the pain others must feel because their family is split in some way, where relationships have broken down. But this also helps me to understand just a little of how You feel when we are separated from You

I could see in my granddaughter's face what I can only think of as adoration; in fact my wife commented on this, "look at that face, look at her, she adores her Grandad"

As I watched her toddling around the furniture, hanging on, still learning to walk, she regularly looked to me, smiled and continued on her way. Sometimes she would go to touch something she shouldn't, a curtain, a wire, and I would gently remove her hand with a softly spoken "no".  She would try a few times but eventually move on. Sometimes she would lose her balance and sit down. Then she would raise her arms to me to be picked up and she would sit on my knee for a while before sliding down to the floor to go exploring again. She said nothing, but I know she loves me, even adores me; what a privilege! Thank You

Help me Father to look at You like this, in wonder, in adoration, lifting up my arms to You. Thank You for being there, watching and waiting, ready to pick me up. Just as she looked at me, so I looked at her. Just as I look at You, so You look at me. Thank You for the love we share. Thank You for Jesus
Amen

wow: what a weekend you had. This has rekindled wonderful memories of my own children and grandchildren growing up. Thank you and what a wonderful reminder of how our Heavenly Father thinks of us
