From Organ Pipes to Circus Ring

28th November 2019

A huge thank you to Paul Winston, for his superb Gala Organ Recital at the Minster ....’From Organ Pipes to Circus Ring’....25 years ago Paul resigned as the organist at the Minster (then St Nicholas) to leave Great Yarmouth, and this year he offered to play a recital in aid of the GYMPT Organ Restoration ProjectJane Freeman reports

This marvelous recital included the greats of the organ repertoire including Bach’s great Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, Mendelssohn’s exultant March of the War Priests, Boellmann’s thrilling Suite Gothique,  all filling the Minster with glorious majestic music, as a contrast s we heard the sublime Variations on Londonderry Air by Noel Rawsthorne
After Widor’s greatly loved Toccata there was a very interesting and amusing Q and A session. Then the grand finale, Louis Vierne’s great masterpiece Carillon de Westminster
Paul received a well-deserved standing ovation for what had been a spectacular and splendid recital
There were two surprises for the audience, first, the church lighting had been dimmed and special lights had been brought in to create a fantastic colourful organ case and ceilings, and second having Paul , after the interval, change into his ringmaster’ outfit. He is with Zippo’s Circus.  As Paul walked down the Minster to the organ console, Martyn Marshall, played the March Entry of Gladiators
It was certainly was a wonderful ‘Night in the Minster ‘.  Thank you Paul and everyone who helped and contributed in any way
