Daily Share-a-Prayer w/e 08/12/2019
Worship Leader, All Saints Church, Belton
Sunday 8th December
Heavenly Father, there will be many who go to church today who will consider it the most important activity of their week, including me! There can be no doubt that coming to worship You and Your Son, Jesus, is a vital part of sustaining our relationship, feeding into it, and helping it to flourish and grow. Coming to You to offer praise and adoration, talking to You and listening to You in prayer, singing songs of worship, hearing scripture, and an explanation of what that scripture means all helps us to know You more and know You better
Father, there is a great danger in relying on this once a week observance:
it can be like taking a deep breath, holding it and expecting it to see me through the week; it can be like a meal that I eat and expect it to last me for 7 days until I come again to be fed. I ask myself am I like this? Help me to come to You every day to offer praise and adoration, every day to talk to You and listen to You in prayer, every day to sing songs of worship, every day to read scripture and ask Your Spirit to show me its meaning and relevance to my life, every day to know more of You and know You better, but also to offer myself to You in service
Lord Jesus You fed the hungry, gave living water to the thirsty, met with strangers and invited them into Your Kingdom, You clothed the naked and demon possessed, healed the sick, and released prisoners. Help me to join You during the week in doing these things too so when I come to church it is also to celebrate what You have been doing
Saturday 7th December
Heavenly Father, You are the God of miracles, the Worker of wonders, the Lord of life. There are miracles around us every day!
there are millions of stars, but they don't crash into one another;
one star nearby, the sun, keeps burning and shining providing our warmth and light, not too near and not too far;
the moon stays where it is, just hanging there in the sky;
the earth keeps turning;
gravity keeps working;
the sea stays in the sea and doesn't wander across the land;
every day new life comes into being, the miracle of birth
The song "Wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles" mentions a few of the miracles You performed: Daniel safe in the lion's den, the walls of Jericho falling down, the Red Sea parting, making man from a lump of clay! David slaying Goliath, manna in the wilderness
Then it talks of the miracle of a loving relationship. Wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles, You came to earth! Of all the great things there are to see and wonder at, the greatest is God on earth, Immanuel, God with us. The Creator of the universe, walking in the creation
Thank You Father that, in order that we might know You, You put on flesh and became one of us. We are safe in the lion's den, You have broken down the walls between us, parted the ocean so we have a causeway to You, the Goliath of death has been swallowed up in victory, and You provided the Bread of Life, Jesus. Our relationship with You has been restored, the wonder of wonders and miracle of miracles, Jesus has done it all. Awesome! Thank You
Friday 6th December
Heavenly Father, I can remember seeing some flint stones on the windowsills in church that had been cracked open and inside was, painted in red, "Praise the Lord!"
And I remember hearing the sermon years ago which was based on the account telling of a whole crowd of disciples joyfully praising You in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen Jesus perform. They were saying and singing "Blessed is the King who comes in the Name of the Lord!" and "Peace in Heaven and glory in the highest!" Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus "Teacher, rebuke Your disciples!" Jesus replied "I tell you, if they keep quiet the stones will cry out"
It seems a strange thing for Jesus to say, but we are told "Let all creation rejoice before the Lord, for He comes, He comes to judge the earth". And also "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord". And we are even told all creation is longing for that future day when You will reveal who Your children really are. And "we know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time"
Father, may I be like a carbonated drink! When I am shaken, when I open my mouth, may I fizz and pop, joining with all creation in singing praise to You. Why? Because You are worthy! Jesus is worthy! May I join with ten thousand times ten thousand angels, and the stones, in a loud voice saying '"Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and praise!"
Thursday 5th December
Heavenly Father, I find myself with the first line of a Johnny Nash song in my head: ‘there are more questions than answers’; and the title of an old TV programme: ‘where are they now?’
Angels, where are they now? Elijah and Moses met with Jesus on the mountain when He was transfigured; where are they now?
The thief next to Jesus, "truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise". Where is he now?
In the prayer Jesus taught us "our Father in Heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven". Where is that now?
In encouraging us You tell us we are surrounded by a crowd of witnesses; where are they now?
An angel appeared to Mary, where is he now?
Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father's throne; where is He now?
Father, there seems to be another dimension where You, Jesus, and the angels reside, where Elijah and Moses live with You. Where the criminal from the cross now lives with You, having received forgiveness and salvation from Jesus, on the cross next to him. Heaven, Paradise, I can't see it, but I know it must be there
Holy Spirit, I can't see You, but I know You are there. King David understood the problem of too many questions! "My heart is not proud, Lord, my eyes are not too haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me". One day, all will revealed, all questions answered, but until then, I will trust in You and Jesus, my Lord and Saviour in the here and now
Wednesday 4th December
Heavenly Father, You encourage us to run with perseverance the race marked out for us so that at the end we can say we have fought a good fight, we have finished the race, we have kept the faith
Father, by Your Spirit, keep me going, I am in this for the long haul and want to be living like Jesus every day right through to the end of my life. Help me to fix my eyes on Jesus, the Pioneer and Perfecter of our faith, who, for the joy set before Him, endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at Your right hand, at Your throne
Help me remember Jesus always, who endured such opposition from sinners, so I will not grow weary and lose heart. Help me to hold on to Your promise, "Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint"
I know that the things of this world can so easily entangle, so help me to kick them off. I know there will be times when my faith will be challenged, my commitment questioned; so, help me to keep going, to keep on going, to drive on through the rain, the storms, knowing that You will be with me and eventually the sun will shine
Help me to remember in tough times, even if I let You down, Your anger lasts only for a moment, but Your favour lasts for a lifetime, a LIFETIME!! Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning
Thank You Father for sending Jesus
Thank You Jesus for sending the Holy Spirit
Thank You Spirit for Your encouragement
Tuesday 3rd December
Heavenly Father, I think I had a dream last night! I don't usually remember dreams, and I don't remember all of this one. I wish I could say it was a vision!
"In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. " Hmm, enough about that Lord. Anyway, I saw two men in a wrestling ring, close up, they were panting and sweating; one was Jesus. Up against the corner post, Jesus says "You don't want to fight with me anymore; let's dance instead!" And the next thing I see is the two men dancing round in a circle, whooping and hollering, dancing what looks like a war dance, and having the time of their lives
Father, this reminds me of King David! "Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might... Michal, daughter of Saul, watched from a window... she despised him in her heart". We are told Michal confronted David, "How the king of Israel distinguished himself today, going round half-naked in full view of the slave girls... as any vulgar fellow would". David's response: "It was before the Lord... I will celebrate before the Lord...I will become even more undignified than this... by these slave girls... I will be held in honour"
Holy Spirit, help me to dance with Jesus throughout today, to celebrate before the Lord in everything I do. No guilt, no shame, just pure joy! The fight is over! Now, dancing and singing with You! Joyfully! Thank You
Monday 2nd December
Heavenly Father, I wonder if we live in the present because every day is a gift from You? I wonder if this quirk in our language is a coincidence or designed by You; did You smile quietly to Yourself when You created the word 'present' with its two meanings? Thank You for the gift of a brand new day, the present
We hear that sometimes people live in the past, unable to shake off events that have happened which affect every day, colouring conversations, holding prisoners, destroying peace and making life monotonous, repetitive, in a loop, bitter
Lord Jesus, You came to set people free, to give us the gift of a brand new day where Your mercies are new every morning. Thank You for the present. "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, scorning it's shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God"
You encourage us to throw off the past, what has been done to us, and what we have done ourselves, and to look to You, to seek You. Let me not dwell on, or in, the past, but to live in the present, strengthened by Your Spirit, encouraged, enabled, engaged, and enjoying life in all fullness. Thank You for the incredible gift of today. May I spend it with You, knowing You do not waste a second. Your joy is my strength
