Gorleston Baptists explore addiction detox initiative

ADDICTION DETOX 01-2020

Churches and medical professionals attended an information session at Gorleston Baptist Church in November to explore the feasibility of setting up a Keys Community Detox programme for the Gorleston area

A partnership with Keys has emerged from a growing desire from those involved with the 'Well' drop-in and Foodbank at Gorleston Baptist Church to be able to reach out and offer practical help to those struggling with addictions

The session was led by Dr Steve Smith from Keys Community Detox, a national organisation based in Sussex, who outlined the three underlying "keys" to their approach: medical, spiritual and community support.  He also gave a striking insight into the 'pain behind addiction' and a reminder that it is essential to address this pain in order to bring long-term healing and freedom

The church-based detox programme helps people escape from alcohol and drug addiction through integrated medical, spiritual and community support. The three principle elements or ‘KEYS’ to this programme are:

Medical - Teams are trained and equipped to support clients before, during and after detox using medical protocols which generally involve the clients own GP
Community - Community Support is a vital ‘key’ to the programme. Having the support of a loving community is a massive boost to anyone seriously wanting to make the lifestyle changes necessary for long-term freedom from drugs and alcohol
Spiritual - Clients are supported through a Christian recovery programme that uses the 12-steps adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to address issues that are very often at the root of addiction

‘The KEYS Project’ which is a UK registered charity established in 2013. It was set up by Dr Stephen Smith, a GP specialist in substance misuse, to coordinate a programme of church-based community detox

It is intended that the Keys programme will launch at Gorleston Baptist Church during 2020
