Sunday 19th January
Heavenly Father, occasionally a composer writes an instruction, 'segue' which tells the musicians to link one piece of music directly to another; Beethoven famously does this in his 5th Symphony between the scherzo and the finale, and Mendelssohn does a similar thing in his Violin Concerto
Sometimes the themes of songs, in the words as much as the music, can segue too. The song "We're looking to Your promise of old" ends with the words "send revival, start with me" and today, in church we will segue straight into, "I am a new creation, no more in condemnation..." This song ends with the words, "A joy that knows no limit, a lightness in my spirit, here in the grace of God I stand". We will then segue back into, "We're looking to Your promise of old..."
When someone asked in a newspaper, "What is wrong with the world?" G.K. Chesterton wrote in reply, "I am"
Father help me to look to Your promise of old, help me to be a new creation, to pray and humble myself so You will come and heal our land, heal each one of us so we become new creations, the old has gone and the new has come. Bring a lightness to my spirit through Your Spirit so I can know a joy that knows no limit as I stand in Your grace, and revival can start with me, with everyone who recognises they have unclean lips but has looked to Your face, received Your blessing, Your forgiveness, and salvation through Jesus, Your Son
I cannot change the world, I cannot change other people, but Lord, You can change me; permission granted. Thank You
Saturday 18th January
Heavenly Father, thank You for raising us from the dead! You tell us we were dead in our transgressions, dead in our sins when You called to us, in a loud voice "Come out!" Just as Lazarus, who had been dead in the grave for four days came out to the Light, so do we. This is why it is said: "Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead and Christ will shine on you"
Father, thank You for the call of Jesus
Thank You that He calls us from the darkness to the Light
Thank You that Jesus tells others to remove the grave clothes from us, to encourage us to realise what has happened. I did not know I was dead in my sins! I did not know I was in grave danger. I did not know I was apart from You, in danger of missing out on the Life of abundance. I did not know that I was in a grave situation; how could I if I was dead in my sins?
Thank You for Your Holy Spirit; without His voice speaking Truth to me, explaining what had happened, I would not understand any of this, any of what has happened
Father, help me to see where Your Spirit is working. Just as the people went to the grave of Lazarus, not knowing what was about to happen, guide me to the places where Jesus is going to call "Come out!" Guide me, so I can be there to help another person who has heard the call, to remove the grave clothes and help them to walk again. The world is full of people in grave danger; keep calling Lord and may I see the dead walk again
Lord Jesus, apart from You I can do nothing, but with You all things are possible. Thank You
Friday 17th January
Heavenly Father, it seems that so many of the heroes of faith were reluctant heroes!
Moses was reluctant to serve You, saying, "Pardon Your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since You have spoken to Your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue... Please send someone else"
A great prophet, Isaiah: "Woe to me," Isaiah cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty." Then a seraph touched Isaiah's lips with a live coal and said, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for"
Gideon spoke to the angel of the Lord, saying, "Pardon me, my Lord, but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manassah, and I am the least in my family"
King David was the youngest in his family, out in the fields tending sheep when he was called!
Elijah, after a great display of Your power ran for his life when threatened by Jezebel, hiding in a cave, saying, "The Israelites have rejected Your covenant... I am the only one left"
The first disciples were ordinary men, fishermen, uneducated. The religious leaders "saw the courage of Peter and John and realised they were unschooled, ordinary men and they were astonished"
Lord Jesus, even You were baptised by Your cousin!
Father, help me to trust You even when my courage fails, when my faith is tested, when I am not sure what to do or which way to turn. Holy Spirit guide me into the Way I should go
Thursday 16th January
Heavenly Father, I sometimes wonder why You sent, or allowed, the enemy to come to the earth when he rebelled against You?
I guess it was because You are a God of love who gives us and, even, angels, time to repent. It seems the enemy chose not to say he was sorry and return to You, so, like so many people, satan still rebels and lives without You
When Adam and Eve sinned, having been tempted by satan, they hid because they were ashamed, embarrassed, afraid, and still today we try to hide from You. The enemy knows that if he can keep reminding us of our shame, keep us embarrassed, keep us afraid and hiding then we remain apart from You, even though, as in the garden of Eden, You have come looking for us
Thank You, Father, for coming to us in the flesh, Jesus walking among us. Thank You that we no longer need to be ashamed, embarrassed or afraid as You have redeemed us. Jesus paid for all sin for all time on the cross at Calvary so we can be set free; no guilt and no shame is necessary, You have provided us with new clothes, the armour of God and a cloak of righteousness
It is never what we do that saves us, it is always, and always will be, what You have done for us. The enemy continues to rebel and will tempt us to rebellion too, but we can stand firm, for when we submit ourselves to You, our God, we can resist the devil and he will flee. Submission to You is the answer, exactly what the enemy refuses to do. Father, I submit myself to You again so I am free from guilt, shame, embarrassment and fear
Wednesday 15th January
Heavenly Father, thank You that You are fulfilling Your promise, "I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh". You repeat, as if for emphasis, the promise You made, "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh"
What does the new Spirit You give us do? What difference does it make? Your New Testament tells us, "For the Spirit God gives us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline"
What kind of heart do You give us? You say, "I will give them a heart to know me, that I AM the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart"
The fruit of Your Spirit is all good! The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. I received a poster the other day with the words, "Not seeing the results? Feel like giving up? Consider this: The last thing to grow on a fruit tree...is the fruit". The poster showed a tree laden with fruit, but the important thing was the roots, going deep into the soil
Father, give me the heart of a lion, the Lion of Judah, so Christ dwells in me through faith, so I am rooted and established in love. As I give my heart to You, so You give Your heart to me. May Your fruit grow abundantly as I live in the power of Your Spirit with Your heart in me. Thank You
Tuesday 14th January
Heavenly Father, thank You for those moments when everything seems crystal clear and Jesus is so close we feel we could reach out and touch Him, those moments when all doubts are removed and we know for certain everything is assured
I know that, at this present time, I do not hear Your voice perfectly; You tell us, "For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known". Thank You for those 'parts' when we know, instances when our vision and hearing is 20/20
Father, may this decade be the Roaring Twenties, a decade when the roar of the Lion of Judah is heard across the world, when the voice of Jesus is heard clearly by so many and the Truth is known by people in every tribe and nation. We are told that one of the elders said to John, "Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and the seven seals"
John continues, “Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the centre of the throne...” And they sang a new song saying, "You are worthy to take the scroll and open its seals, because You were slain, and with Your blood You purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation"
Lord Jesus, Lion and Lamb of God, may we hear Your roar and also see the Lamb, and join with the angels saying, "To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honour and glory and power, for ever and ever!"
Monday 13th January
Heavenly Father, I finished praying yesterday with the words, "I can see clearly now the plank has gone!" If I continue with the words of a song I sing, "I can see all obstacles in my way". Help me to keep my vision clear, help me to see the obstacles that block my way and to keep all dust, and planks, out of my eyes
Help me see everything at FAITH value, seeing what is important, what is of value, with Your eyes. You tell us quite clearly throughout the Bible that "the righteous will live by faith". When I declare with my mouth, "Jesus is Lord", and believe in my heart You raised Him from the dead, I am saved. For it is with our hearts we believe and are justified, and it is with our mouths we profess our faith and are saved
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see
Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Gideon, Barack, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets all lived by faith, trusting in that which they did not see. It is by grace we have been saved, through faith - and this is not from ourselves, it is a gift from You - not by works, so that no one can boast
Jesus is who the ancients waited for, Jesus is who we now know and see. Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart. You alone can rescue, You alone can save. Keep my eyes on Jesus with 20/20 vision. Let me hear Him speaking in accents clear and still; 20/20 hearing. Thank You
