Sunday 26th July

 

Heavenly Father, how dare we, how dare any individual, attempt to impose their will on, dominate, another person? How dare any nation impose its will, dominate, invade another nation?
 
Even You, the Author of creation, who has the authority, who has every right, do not do this, You do not do it with us, and You did not do it with Your own Son, Jesus. I know You do not impose Your will on me because if You did I would not do half of what I do! And I would not have done, at least half of what I have done!
 
I know You did not impose Your will on Jesus because He had a choice to make in the Garden of Gethsemane, the same as He had a choice about going to Jerusalem. He chose to do Your will and not His own; He could have avoided the pain and agony of the cross but He chose Your Way, not His
 
In giving us free will, You allow us to make choices which damage ourselves, hurt our spouses and our children, our communities, and even Your church. With our free will we have chosen to mar the world in which we live, spoiling the beauty of creation. In our free will we have chosen to love ourselves rather than You, our loving Heavenly Father; we have become selfish instead of Godly
 
Father, forgive our nation for going to war, for invading and dominating other peoples. In Your grace and mercy good things may have come out of this, but that is to Your glory, not ours. Forgive me anything I may have done, through negligence, through weakness, through my own deliberate choice, which has hurt or damaged any other person

Saturday 25th July

Heavenly Father, the Psalmist writes, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the works of His hands... Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let Your glory be over all the earth"
 
We live in a wonderful creation, surrounded by such beauty in nature and in people; thank You that we are able to appreciate our world. We can see such beauty in the ever changing skies above us, sky blue with not a cloud in sight, or filled with huge white clouds, every one a different shape. Sometimes grey and overcast or with large black clouds which tell us a rain storm is on the way. Infinite variety would seem to suggest an infinite mind, an infinite Creator
 
If we travel around the world seeing awesome mountains and valleys, huge wide open spaces, flowing rivers or barren deserts, each one again different, we see the work of Your hands.
 
Beyond our own planet we see the sun, moon and stars also declaring Your glory. And the minute details of the smallest creatures show You again as the Creator of all things, bright and beautiful. And each one of us, human beings, in infinite variety, each one of us given our own fingerprint to show You create us as individuals, unique, made for relationship with You and with one another
 
Forgive us Father that we have made such a mess of things, the world we live in and the broken relationships between individuals and nations. Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God".  May we all be peacemakers today, like Jesus. Thank You

Friday 24th July

Heavenly Father, there are some days we simply don't want to come, that we wish we didn't have to face, but they arrive anyway and therefore we have to get through them
 
Thank You that when the going gets tough it is not the tough who get going, but it is You who gets going. In our darkest hours You are there with us, Your Holy Spirit, the Comforter draws alongside us in a special way to strengthen us and reassure us that we are never alone. "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me... Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever"
 
We may feel like we have lost everything but You place Your arms around us and remind us that the best is yet to come. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Look! God's dwelling place is now among the people, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away".  Whatever we face today, and we know have to face it, we can't turn our backs on it, whatever comes You will bring us through
 
Lord, You are a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble... You are my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in You, and You help me. You will hold me up with Your strong right hand today. Thank You

Thursday 23rd July

Heavenly Father, sometimes when we look back over our lives we may say, "If I had known then what I know now..." and then follow on with "I wouldn't be in this mess", or "I would have done things differently", or perhaps, "I would never have done what I did"
 
Thank You that in Your great mercy and loving kindness You forgive us and allow us time to learn from our mistakes and enable us to change. However, what if I did know then what I know now, and I still went ahead and got into a mess?
 
Sometimes it seems that in the battle between the Spirit and the flesh, the flesh wins and we commit sin; we are unable to resist, the temptation is too strong. Too strong?  I know You do not tempt us to sin, but I guess You allow temptation to happen, like with Job. You allowed satan to attack Job, saying, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself you may not lay a finger".  Job lost everything, and later You even allowed his body to be attacked, but not killed. Job never gave in, never cursed You, despite all that happened to him
 
St Paul wrote, "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it"
 
A way out? You provide a Way out, but I must choose to go through that exit. Forgive me for the times I have knowingly ignored Your Exit sign. Strengthen my resolve to do what is right and follow Your Way, always

Wednesday 22nd July

Heavenly Father, we are Watchmen on the wall! I am a Watchman on the wall! As Your people we have a responsibility to let others know they are in danger.  This is not if or when, it is now. We are always in danger! Your Word tells us, "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour"
 
The only protection we can rely on is Your Word, that which Jesus has provided, for He is the Truth and because of His Spirit alive in us we can recognise the lies of the enemy; but what if someone does not have the Spirit, how can they recognise the lies of the enemy?  Do they even know there is an enemy?  
 
This is where we have a responsibility!  If I was to discover a building on fire I would have no hesitation in raising the alarm.  If I saw a child about to pick up a pan of boiling water my intervention would be immediate and could save them from being scalded.  In the physical world the danger is usually obvious, we see it, feel it, hear it, smell it; but spiritual danger cannot always be sensed, the enemy is cunning, crafty, a liar, so those who are spiritually aware need to be "Watchmen on the wall"
 
You tell us, "remember this: whoever turns a sinner from the error of their ways will save them from death and cover a multitude of sins".  There is a clear and present danger, but only those alive in the Spirit sense it
 
Father, help us to raise the alarm! I do not want anyone's blood on my hands so as a Watchman make my alarm sound clearly today. Thank You

Tuesday 21st July

Heavenly Father, there is a proverb that says, "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he".  I guess this applies equally to men and women!
 
We become what we think?

If I think negative thoughts I become negative?
If I think defeated thoughts I become defeated?
If I focus on fear I become fearful?
If I think I am unhappy, sad and lonely, I become unhappy, sad, and lonely
If I think I have nothing I will live as if I have nothing

 
Peace Pilgrim said, "If you realised how powerful your thoughts are you would never think a negative thought".  So, how do I change my mind? You tell us, "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things... And the God of peace will be with you"
 
If I think like this I will become noble, pure, lovely, admirable; things I do and say will become excellent or praiseworthy.  I can only do this if I follow Your advice, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will"
 
 This world, (Homer Simpson?) would say, "If at first you don't succeed... give up".  But You tell us to fight the good fight of faith!  Then I can say, '"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith"
 
Father, help me to think what is right, and therefore do what is right. Thank You

Monday 20th July

Heavenly Father, I would love to come before You this morning for a meat feast, but I am not sure I am ready for it
 
Have I got rid of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind; should I still be craving pure spiritual milk? Or should I have moved on by now?
 
Am I still not ready for solid food?
Am I still too worldly?
Do I quarrel?
Am I jealous?
 
Therefore do You still give me milk? Am I still an infant, not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness? Or am I now mature enough for solid food, as I have been trained to distinguish between good and evil?
 
Father, thank You that I am able to dwell on Your  Word and what it means; I have time to chew on it, like solid food, meat. Jesus said, "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God".  Reading Your Word is the most important meal of the day and then digesting it so it feeds me and gives me strength throughout the day
 
Meeting with You now, at the start of the day, talking things over, chewing things over, teaches me something new every time, so I am becoming acquainted with righteousness and being trained to distinguish between good and evil.
 
Just as I need food every day to live, so I need Your Word, Jesus, every day to live a full life. You do not want me to merely survive, You want me to thrive and grow.
 
Thank You for the apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers who equip us until we reach unity in the faith, to become mature and no longer infants. Thank You
