Sunday 18th October

Heavenly Father, I was praying yesterday about becoming mature as Your child, but I must always remember Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven"
What qualities do we see in a child that we lose so we cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven? I remember my own children, and now my grandchildren, looking up to me and trusting me to pick them up, even though I may swing them round in the air, even though I may hang them upside down, even though I may throw them up in the air, they trust me to catch them and hold them safely, and they trust their Mum and Dad
Their smiles and giggles are a delight to us. Hearing them speak for the first time, "Mama" or "Dada" or "Grandad" or "Nana" brings great joy. When they hurt themselves, a fall, a bump, they hold out their arms to be lifted up and comforted. When they are hungry they cry out to be fed
Their first love is Mummy and Daddy, their morning smile shows their love. Is this how You want us to be? Even as we grow older, grow in our faith, to keep that first love, trusting You even when our world is turned upside down? Saying Your name," Abba" as we hold our arms out to You to be picked up. Crying out to You when we hunger and thirst for righteousness
Even though we grow and become independent we can always depend on You. We are never too old to come to You, never too old to dance before You, never too old to sing to You. And You always delight when we say Your name. Thank You

Saturday 17th October

Heavenly Father, when I think back to my childhood I have so many happy memories of Christmas presents I received
I just spent a few minutes thinking of them and a smile crossed my face as I remember playing with the toys very early on Christmas morning. Some of those things I played with for years, and even have some still, stored away up in the loft, a tangible reminder of happy days
Even though they were happy days, it would be rather disconcerting if I was still playing with the toys for hours on end today; even though they were times of great fun, it would be rather sad if I were still lying on the floor, at my age, pushing a Corgi car along, murmuring "Brmm, Brmm..."
There comes a time when we have to grow up, when I had to grow up. "When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me".  Does this mean I am no longer a child? I am Your child, and I can still come to You at times for a hug, for reassurance and to be fed
There was a time when I was told, "Like new born babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good".  Have I grown up?
We are told, "But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil".  Help me to feed on solid food so I can chew things over with You recognising good and rejecting evil, food for thought. May Jesus be my Daily Bread.  Thank You

Friday 16th October

Heavenly Father, one word from You and this pandemic would be over. One word from You and this whole creation will be over. We don't know when the end will come, Jesus said about the end of time, "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father"
St Paul explained that prophecies will cease, tongues will be stilled, and knowledge will pass away; a time will come when what we believe, say, and know will end, as we only know in part, we only prophesy in part
Jesus said, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away"
Paul knew about Jesus' words and continued, "When completeness comes, what is in part disappears".  Completeness comes when Jesus returns, when the new heaven and new earth are brought about by Your Word
Paul again explains "For we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known".  So, for the time being, for that is what we are, 'Time Beings', human beings living in time, we must continue with three thing that remain, faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is love
Without love we are like a resounding gong or clanging cymbal, just noise.  With faith we can ask You to move mountains. With hope we can see a future with You. With love You have covered a multitude of sins
May we trust You for now and for then.  May we trust You, not just now and then, but always.  "I will never leave you nor forsake you".  Thank You

Thursday 15th October

Heavenly Father, thank You that love never fails. A friend of mine, who came to be with You recently, used to often say, "It's as simple and sweet as that!"
Thank You that while we are speaking in love, acting in love, we can trust that You are at work. "We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose"
Of course, it may seem that everything has gone wrong, that the relationship we were trying to save has broken down, that a friendship we thought was solid has crumbled, but as we often hear said, "It's not over till it's over".  While we continue to love it is not dead. And even if it is dead, it is not over, because You are still at work
It looked like it was all over for the disciples, Jesus was dead and buried. They had left Him to His fate. Simon Peter had denied ever knowing Him. They locked themselves away and saw no future. But love never fails. Even the grave could not defeat love, Your love for Jesus, Your Spirit raised Him from the dead.  It was not over, and it is not over; today; Your love is still at work in the lives of all who love You and, because of Your love, love others
Lord Jesus, thank You for trusting Your Father, even when faced with the cross
Thank You for the hope You put in our hearts
Thank You for persevering, even loving us from the cross so much that You asked Your Father to forgive us
And thank You that Your love protects us, even when we reach the end of our time on earth; with You, it's never over

Wednesday 14th October

Heavenly Father, St Paul tells us a great deal about love, inspired by Your Holy Spirit. Through him You tell us it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres
I know my love is not perfect, so I have to look to the One whose love was and is perfect to see the Truth in these words: Jesus. Jesus did not say we would be protected from trouble in this life, in fact the opposite, He said, "In this life you will have trouble".  And we can certainly see that this is the Truth, right at this moment we have troubles!
And if it is for this life only then we may feel let down, but Jesus' love goes beyond this life. We are protected, because even death does not defeat us; eternal life waits! That is a protection that is unlimited. And in this life His Spirit, even now protects us: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus"
Thank You for guarding our hearts and minds in times of trouble. Your love enabled Jesus to trust You in every circumstance, even when faced with death on the cross, He knew that Your love would see Him through and that He would be raised. Help me to trust You in every circumstance too. "If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied".  BUT Christ has been raised, and we will be raised too. Help me to persevere in love, as Jesus did

Tuesday 13th October

Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus told us that He is the Truth. If we want to know the Truth then we need to know Jesus. There is no other Way
It seems strange to think that the Truth is a person but for all those searching for meaning in life, for those looking for a purpose, for those wanting a reason for living, then Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life
The answer is not found in a system or a political point of view, it is not found in financial status, or possessions or fame, it is found in Your Son, He is the Truth and He is the Way we find You and understand You. Our relationship with You is established through the Truth that Jesus, Your Son, lived and died to restore our relationship with You.  When He died the curtain in the temple was torn from the top to the bottom; You opened the Way into the Holy of Holies so that we could enter into Your presence
St Paul tells us "Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the Truth".  And St John tells us, "We love because He first loved us.  Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And He has given us this command: anyone who loves God must also love their brother or sister"
Father, there must be a point where those who plot evil, claiming they act in Your Name, must choose evil over love, reject Christ, Your Way and Truth. Father, help us to seek You, to seek Your Way, Your Truth, and Your Life

Monday 12th October

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are not like the Pharaoh who forced the people of Israel to make bricks without straw
You are a King who gives us all that we need to carry out Your will! You are the King of Love, my Shepherd, who guards me and guides me all the days of my life. I know I can trust You so that even before You ask something of me I know I can answer "Yes!"
Jesus put Your will before His own, and that is why I am able to know You, His sacrifice opened the Way into Your presence and the Gateway to Eternal Life
St Paul tells us about love, and in telling us about love, he tells us about You and about Jesus.  He tells us, "It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs".  In telling us what it is not, what love does not do, Paul opens the door for us to work out more of what love is:

if love does not dishonour others then it must honour them, lift them up;
if it is not self-seeking love must seek good things for others;
if love is not easily angered it must be patient, forgiving, gentle, calm;
if love keeps no record of wrongs we must not hold grudges, but get rid of the list of things that we count against people who have hurt us, deal with one thing at a time, then let it go

This is how You deal with us, how Jesus lived His life, saying, "Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing".  Jesus, honouring us, seeking good for us, not angry but forgiving and not keeping a record of our sin. May I be like Him
