Sunday 10th January

Heavenly Father, the guidance is simple, it is repeated several times a day on the banner: Stay Home - Protect the NHS - Save Lives. The Gov.UK website follows with the warning and advice, "National lockdown: stay at home

Coronavirus (COVID-19) is spreading fast. Do not leave your home unless necessary. 1 in 3 people who have the virus have no symptoms, so you could be spreading it without knowing it". The Chairman of the British Medical Association has stated in a letter that over 46,000 hospital staff are off sick with COVID-19 heaping more pressure on those staff who are already over stretched

Father, there is very little that I can do to help as I am not a doctor, nor am I a nurse; I am not trained in medical matters... so what can I do to help? I can follow the advice given! Stay Home - Protect the NHS - Save Lives. I may not like it, in fact I do not like it, but if it helps then it is what I will do

The other thing I can do is pray! Which is why I am here now, in Your presence, asking You to protect those who are risking their lives on behalf of others. Jesus said, "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends". But these lives are laid down for strangers!

“You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbour and hate your enemy'. But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in Heaven"

Holy Spirit, open my eyes to see the Truth and strengthen my resolve to do what is right
Amen

Saturday 9th January

Heavenly Father, it is so hard to pray today about anything other than the virus which is affecting so many lives at present. Record numbers of deaths recorded in a single day as well as the highest number of new infections, and government instructions to stay at home, instil a sense of fear and a sense of foreboding. So it is hard to think about much else

The words of the Psalmist should bring comfort, "Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, 'He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust'. Surely He will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence". The words should bring comfort but it is hard to believe them!

The Psalmist continues, "You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you"

Over a thousand have fallen, over ten thousand! Will the virus, the plague, really not come near? Which way shall I turn when there is nowhere to go? The only safe place! You!

"Because he loves me" says the Lord, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges My Name. He will call on Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honour him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my Salvation"

Whatever comes, even death, we are safe with You
Amen

Friday 8th January

Heavenly Father, I feel a deep sadness within me; perhaps like Nehemiah felt?

He took King Artaxerxes some wine and the Bible records that Nehemiah had not been sad in the king's presence before, so the king asked him, "Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart". Nehemiah was very much afraid, but said to the king, "May the king live forever! Why should my face not look sad when the city where my ancestors lie buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?"

The king asks Nehemiah what he wants and he explains that he wants to go and rebuild the city. Nehemiah has nothing so asks the king for everything he needs. The king gives everything required and Nehemiah goes and rebuilds the walls of Jerusalem

Enemies tried to stop the rebuilding so half of the men did the work while the other half were equipped with spears, shields, bows and armour. We are told, "Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other, and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked"

Father, it feels like the whole world has been attacked and we are now trying to rebuild it! Unable to do this ourselves we come to You, our great and mighty King and God and ask You to give us all we need. Constant prayer is the sword by our side. The enemy will attack but we will rebuild in Your strength, by Your Spirit. "Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit" says the Lord Almighty
Amen

Thursday 7th January

Heavenly Father, I want to pray for all those who are struggling in these difficult days, especially the frontline workers, and especially those in the NHS; but I'm not sure what to pray!

Living a life under threat is awful and it must be so hard to keep going, remain positive, and look to encourage and support those around you when you, yourself, need encouragement and support to keep going and remain positive because your life also is under threat. So what do I pray?

What do those front line workers need right now? What do I ask of You? You know their needs better than anyone! Where can I find the words I need to meet the need?

Your Word is the source of Life and the resource in times of need. "Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak"

Father, I ask that You give a double portion, even a treble portion, of every good thing to everyone who is struggling. May every smile offer hope and encouragement. May every 'thank you' be meant more deeply and lift the spirit. May every helping hand be strengthened. May every minute of sleep refresh and restore so each person awakes invigorated

God of love strengthen each heart again. God of power and might supply every need as You keep and send Your Word
Amen

Wednesday 6th January

Heavenly Father, thank You for the way You have structured language so that it offers so many options in how we use it

Rhymes and rhythms can often help us to remember ideas that help us in verse and poetry. Rhymes, rhythms, and tunes are part of our daily worship in Psalms, hymns, and songs. In thinking about judging and judgement I was reminded of this short verse:

"There is so much good in the worst of us,
And so much bad in the best of us,
That it doesn’t behove any of us
To find fault with the rest of us"

A great king like David, a man after Your own heart, had many faults;
Jonah and Elijah both ran away;
Gideon thought he wasn't good enough;
Rahab was a prostitute, but is listed in the genealogy of Jesus;
The disciples ran away!

Yet all served You in one way or another

Thank You that anyone can be filled with Your Spirit

Thank You that anyone can serve You

Thank You that no-one is beyond Your reach

Thank You that "We know that in all things You work for the good of those who love You, who have been called according to Your purpose"

Just as a master craftsman has an array of tools and selects the right tool for each part of the job he is doing, so You choose the right person at the right time for the task You want to achieve

Today You still work through us, imperfect people made perfect by You for whatever You send us to do. May I be picked up and used by You today
Amen

Tuesday 5th January

Heavenly Father, help me to make wise judgements but not to be judgemental. You tell us, "To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice"

Jesus said, "Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven" and "Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you"

It is so easy to fall into the trap of hearing or reading about someone and jumping to conclusions. One of the greatest singers of the 20th century had a lot of bad press, sometimes linking him to the Mafia, but I don't know if what was written was true. On investigating a little further I discovered a very different report from witnesses to his character. His generosity was amazing; if what is reported is true! I am in no position to judge so I leave it to You

You told the prophet Samuel, "The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart". Despite this singer's generosity, his heart is what is important to You; if his actions flowed from a right Spirit within him You would know and be pleased!

Thank You for Jesus, the Son of Man, Your Son, whose heart was perfect, whose motives were pure, in whom You were "well pleased"

 Thank You that He did not come to condemn us but to save us. I accept His generous offer of Salvation today
Amen

Monday 4th January

Heavenly Father, it seems that there are two ways to live with regards to faith: either, seeing is believing or believing is seeing

We can choose whether to see things at face value or faith value. We can choose whether to trust You or test You

We can choose whether to go first or let You go first

We can choose whether to believe that what You say is true or tripe!

Thank You for the choices You allow us to make; each one of them shows how much You love us and value us

Thank You that when we believe then we can see

Thank You that when we value things in faith we see their true value

Thank You that when we let You go first You open doors and encourage us to go through them

Thank You that when we trust You we are able to find Your Way forward, Your Way in the world

Thank You that we can choose whether to live in the way of the world or Your Way

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will"

Thank You that my mind can be renewed, that old ways of thinking can be transformed to Your Way of thinking

You see life differently, You value things that are eternal rather than temporal. You tell us three things remain, faith, hope, and love, all intangible; I cannot see them, except when they are in action

In Jesus we see faith in action, hope restored and love demonstrated. Help me to trust in Jesus so I will see as I believe
Amen
