Musings on my first three months as minister of Gorleston Baptist Church

9th January 2021

Mike Flynn started as minister of Gorleston Baptist Church on 1st October last year – pictured above with his wife, Kay, enjoying the Norfolk countryside

As I reflect on the first three months in my new role as minister of Gorleston Baptist Church, I certainly wasn’t expecting the circumstances to be quite as they turned out to be!  But of course we have all had to adapt and manage the challenges of this time and the impact of  Covid on us all.  May God be close to each one of us, helping and inspiring us and encouraging us in our own circumstances and roles

It has actually been a good three months in many ways notwithstanding the difficulties: settling in and getting to know folk a little where possible

So, here’s a bit of a summary of the first THREE MONTHS:
Teamwork – It was clear from the start I was joining one big team
Health & Safety – Who would have thought this would be such a priority!
Roadmap – though this keeps being torn up..! (Maybe R is for Reality-check!)
Enthusiasm – of others in the church amidst the difficulty – really encouraging
Ephesians – Planning a sermon series on this amazing book, as my attempt to bring some normality into church life
Mentor – As a ‘Newly Accredited Minister’ I meet periodically with a mentor – it is really important for me to draw on the wisdom of others
Online – Say no more!
Networking – Great to network with other churches and minister colleagues in the area
Talent – of many, young and old: some amazing gifts being used faithfully in God’s service (including foodbank, worship leading, IT, and more)
Holiday – Rhythms are important and time off is good for a balanced life (not going anywhere though!)
Spirit – Reliance on God for everything going forward into 2021!
I wonder what your past ‘three months’ have looked like, and whether any of these points resonate.  Let’s continue to encourage one another, demonstrating Jesus’ love and trusting in Him for all that lies ahead
