Suicide prevention training on offer in Norfolk

Norfolk and Waveney Mind is providing free QPR gatekeeper training for Suicide Prevention which is well suited to anyone working or volunteering in churches in this region

1 in 5 people will experience serious thoughts of suicide during their lifetime. Loss of life to suicide is of national concern – it’s the leading cause of death in several population groups – and the evidence is that it’s preventable

During this current pandemic, the numbers are likely to increase. That means you’re likely to know someone – a friend, family member or colleague – who is affected or to be affected yourself. Completing this course would help you to recognise the warning signs of suicide and know how to offer hope, get help and save a life

Norfolk and Waveney Mind’s Lighthouse project is supported by Norfolk County Council's Public Health Department and Norfolk's Clinical Commissioning Group and has been created as a result of a great need for suicide prevention support in Norfolk. It provides free support and training to communities and those working in and around North Norfolk and the Great Yarmouth area

QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) is for anyone looking to raise their awareness around the subject of suicide and who would like to learn the skills to support someone in a crisis. Just like CPR, QPR is an emergency response to someone in crisis and can save lives. QPR is the most widely taught prevention training in the world and over 2,500,000 people have been trained worldwide

Key components covered in training are:

  • How to Question, Persuade and Refer someone who may be suicidal
  • How to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing suicide
  • The common causes of suicidal behaviour
  • The warning signs of suicide
  • How to get help for someone in crisis

The Gatekeeper training includes free resources and the best-selling e-book by Paul Quinnett, Ph.D.  It also includes free certification which is valid for three years

The course fee would normally be £60, but this on-line course is free, and is open to anyone who lives, runs a business, volunteers, or supports people in the community in North or East Norfolk. It would be ideal for those working or volunteering in a church or Christian organisation

The course will continue to run from 10.30am to 11.30am on Mondays April 12 and 19, and Wednesday April 28.  More dates are planned for this summer
