Sunday 9th May
Heavenly Father, I do not remember everything my earthly Dad said to me. In fact I am not sure I remember anything he said to me! I can't say, for example, "My Dad always used to say..." I don't have a "last thing he said to me". But what I do remember is that I was loved. I don't really know how I know that, but I do; I am absolutely certain of it
Thank You for that love. I know I am very fortunate as not everyone has that experience; I know that not all earthly Dads are good
Thank You that I do have a record of the things that You have said, my Heavenly Father. You made sure I would know what You have said by having them written down. And You have also made sure I know of the great things You have done by making sure they were written down too!
And I also know of the things Jesus said and did as they are written down as well. I can look into Your Word to find the things You say. I can look into Your Word to find the things You did. I can look into Your Word to find out what Jesus said and did
Just as I know, in my heart, my Dad loved me, so I know You love me; I am absolutely certain of it
Thank You that Your love shines through in all that You say and do, especially in the life of Jesus, when You came and lived among us. You spoke up for us against those who would take advantage of us. You provided wine and food for us. You brought healing to so many. You protected the vulnerable
Thank for making sure that I know I am loved by You. You wrote a book all about it!

Saturday 8th May
Heavenly Father, I said to You yesterday, "I am not as strong as I once was and my abilities have diminished..."
I used to be able to play and run all day, from when I first woke until I went to bed, I was busy, I ran everywhere, and if I didn't run I pedalled fast on my bike. Now, I play with one of my grandchildren for ten minutes and I have to sit down!
I know there are pieces of music, Mozart Horn Concertos, that I could once play at the drop of a hat, but I wouldn't attempt them now, even if many hats were dropped; at least, not in public; those days have long gone. And yet, there are some musicians who play equally as well as they get older; I wonder what is their secret?
I suppose I know: regular practice. Each day, without fail, they practice. I remember reading of one pianist who said, something like this, "If I do not practice for one day, I notice. If I do not practice for a week the audience notices. If I do not practice for a month the critics might notice"
Father, I want to keep my relationship with You fresh and lively, I want to hear Your voice and know Your blessing every day. I know I have to make the effort, put in the time, to come and knock at Your door, and be welcomed in. I need to keep listening for You knocking on my door, to stop doing what I am doing and sit down with You. Time and effort!
Practice may not always make perfect but it does improve. Draw me close to You, never let me go. I lay it all down again, to hear You say that I'm Your friend. You're all I want, You're all I ever needed. Thank You

Jesus, Friend of Sinners
Friday 7th May
Heavenly Father, thank You for all that You have done for me! Lord, I'm grateful, amazed at what You've done, even though my finest efforts are like filthy rags. Somehow, through what Jesus did on the cross over two thousand years ago, I am made righteous in Your sight. Salvation is given for free, the work of Christ is sufficient for me
Lord Jesus, You are enough for me, so now nothing in all creation can separate me from the love of God which I have in You. Thank You that I can sing, when all around is fading, and nothing seems to last, when each day is filled with sorrow, still I know with all my heart, You've got the whole world in Your hands
Because You are with me, I'll fear no evil, You are strong to deliver and mighty to save. I don't think I will face a fire physically today, however I may well do emotionally, mentally, or spiritually, but You will protect me so I am not burned
And, in the storms of life, when the waves come crashing round me, Your hand will reach out to me and lift me up so I am safe once again
Thank You for delivering me. I was once in darkness, but You took all my sin and shame, and delivered me into the Kingdom of Light. Lord Jesus, on the cross, You are the Postman, the One who delivers
Thank You that I do not have to trust in my own strength or abilities. I am not as strong as I once was and my abilities have diminished, but Your strength and love, and Your ability to save are undiminished. I am in Your hands and there is no safer place

Thursday 6th May
Heavenly Father, thank You for the first disciples, the apostles, and those who "devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer"
And thank You for Paul's instruction to the Colossians, "Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful". I am here today, and people all over the world today, are praying, breaking bread together in fellowship, giving thanks and being watchful because of the obedience of those first disciples
Thank You that those first disciples watched Jesus, listened to Jesus, and did what He asked them to do in His final instruction: "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you"
If they had not done what Jesus asked, I doubt there would be any Church today, and I know I would not be here today, praying. Jesus prefaced His final instruction, "All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to me". And He concluded, "And surely I AM with you always, to the very end of the age"
Thank You that Jesus is still with us today, by His Spirit and that He speaks through us today with that same authority He was given
St Paul said he did not come with eloquence or human wisdom, his message and preaching were not with wise or persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power
Holy Spirit, through works of power, open eyes, ears, and hearts today

Wednesday 5th May
Heavenly Father, the rock band Queen sang a song which includes the words, "I want it all and I want it now!" There always have been people who want it all, almost always to the detriment of others
Perhaps this was highlighted recently when some of the richest football clubs in Europe tried to create a 'European Super League' where they would be protected, playing among themselves without the risk of being relegated whilst making even more money for their owners, who probably have more money now than they will ever be able to spend. Meanwhile the clubs in the lower leagues struggle to survive
There will always be what we often refer to as 'the haves and have nots' and the 'haves' will often want it all and want it now. Jesus recognised this when He said, "You will always have the poor among you..." echoing what He had learned from the Law, "There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land"
It is tragic to see so many of the 'have nots' suffering in India at the moment where whole areas are covered with the bodies of the victims of Covid-19 as they are cremated
I know I am one of the 'haves', as I have had my two doses of vaccine. I live in a country of 'haves'. May we be generous to the 'have nots,' those nations who are crying out for help
May we never look the other way, but see things Your Way. Lord Jesus, You died openhanded, for us

Tuesday 4th May
Heavenly Father, I do believe, I really do believe, that one day You will make Your dwelling place among us, that we will be Your people and You will be our God
And I also believe, truly I do, that one day, You will wipe every tear from our eyes and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. It is a day, a time, which we can all look forward to when all fear is gone; eternity beckons and we will be welcomed home. Thank You
But Lord, we live in today. And in today there is still so much evil in the world. There are still bullies, dictators who rule and ruin the lives of others, whole nations that live in fear because one man, or a small group of men, have taken control by force and now put down all opposition
And there are still families where the evil of previous generations seeps down into the next generations so evil persists
And there are still cultures where women and children are regarded as mere objects to be taken and used for the pleasure of men, young girls raped and married to strangers, bearing children into a society where they will become the next generation to be used in exactly the same way
Surely Father, this should not be happening? How can this go on, unchecked, from generation to generation? How can it be that evil continues to blight the lives of so many?
Lord Jesus, send Your Spirit today to change hearts today, a clear sign that Your will be done, and Your Kingdom can come on earth as it is in Heaven. Lord Jesus, answer Your own prayer today
song for today:
Made in perfect love (Your Kingdom Come)
Monday 3rd May
Heavenly Father, about 700 years before Jesus was born, Isaiah wrote, "Woe to the sinful nation, a people whose guilt is great, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the Lord; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on Him"
As I look at the world today, I wonder has anything changed? Are there still countries which are given to corruption? Are there still people whose guilt is great? Are there still broods of evil doers? From what I see and hear the answer would seem to be "Yes!"
Larry Norman wrote a song with a repeated phrase, a theme, "Nothing really changes, everything remains the same, we are what we are till the day that we die"
Another prophet, Jeremiah, asks a question, and gives an answer, "Can an Ethiopian change his skin or a leopard its spots? Neither can you do good who are accustomed to doing evil"
All this seems to suggest that there is little hope for nations, peoples or individuals, but Larry Norman writes a single line in his song which shines a light in this darkness, "Unless JC sets you free, nothing really changes"
But these initials, JC, Jesus Christ, make all the difference in the world, and to the world. Can a nation be changed? Can a person be changed?
From what I read, and what I see the answer must be "Yes!" I read that You have come in the flesh, and people will be changed, even nations will be changed; and me! "Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit" says the Lord Almighty. Yes! Thank You
