Sunday 30th May

Heavenly Father, thank You for teaching me, being my Master and my Friend

Thank You that as I meet with You each day I learn from You

Thank You for my textbook, the Bible, which You wrote over thousands of years using many different writers but all inspired by Your Holy Spirit

Thank You for opening my eyes to see, my ears to hear, my mind to understand, and my heart to love Your Word

Thank You for coming into this world, walking with us, talking with us, sitting with us, eating with us, living with us so we could know You in person

Thank You for being so patient with me, going over the same points again and again because I am so slow to learn; things like compassion, forgiveness, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. All things I learn from You and about You

Thank You for the new things You introduce as I sit at Your feet

Thank You for teaching me that the poor in spirit are blessed, those who mourn are blessed, the meek and those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are blessed, that the merciful and the pure in heart are blessed, that peacemakers and those who are persecuted because of righteousness are also blessed

Thank You that I am getting to know you, getting to know all about you. Getting to like you, getting to hope you like me

Thank You for all the beautiful and new things I am learning about You day by day. I am starting to grasp how wide and long, high and deep is the love of Christ. Thank You
Amen

Saturday 29th May

Heavenly Father, I saw someone in a video a few days ago wearing a pair of jeans with holes in the knees. I often see people wearing jeans with holes in the knees. The holes are not there because of wear and tear, the jeans are made that way! I don't own a pair of jeans with holes in; in fact I don't own a pair of jeans but it seems strange to me that someone would buy something new but damaged

Father, You know I have never been one to adopt any fashion in clothes. I know some people want to 'fit in' and so adopt the latest fashion or the latest gadgets. I think we all want to 'fit in', I know I do, but I don't think I can do so by buying a certain type of clothes. So, how do I 'fit in'? I wonder if we try to fit in by being like other people? A 'dedicated follower of fashion'? I am not that, anyone who knows me will tell You that; but of course You already know

I know You do not look at the things people look at. People look at outward appearance, but You look at the heart. If I want to 'fit in' perhaps I need to look where You look, at my heart? In my heart I can be a dedicated follower of Jesus. In my words I can speak like Jesus. In my actions I can act like Jesus. Fortunately I do not need to dress like Jesus because You do not look at the outward appearance!

You are the one who fashioned me for Your purposes and put Your Spirit in me as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb. May I be fashioned by You
Amen

Friday 28th May

Heavenly Father, thank You for this day and all that You have planned for it. This day, like every day has great potential, which is dependent on one thing, our obedience

Saul was made King over Israel and had the potential to be a great King but he was not obedient and the kingdom was taken from him and given over to a shepherd boy, David, "a man after Your own heart". The Bible records, "Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord; he did not keep the Word of the Lord and even consulted a medium for guidance, and did not inquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse"

David recognised that Saul had not fulfilled his potential and wept over him. The Bible tells us that David took up this lament concerning Saul and his son Jonathan, and he ordered that the people of Judah be taught this lament of the bow: "A gazelle lies slain on your heights, Israel. How the mighty have fallen!"

For this to be a good day and fulfil its potential I need to do one thing, be obedient. I need to listen to Your voice, read Your Word, follow Your instructions and live in the power of Your Holy Spirit. Jesus said, "I have come down from Heaven not to do my will but to do the will of Him who sent me". And in the garden of Gethsemane, "Father, if You are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but Yours be done"

To obey is better than sacrifice, but sometimes obedience leads to sacrifice. Help me to be obedient, a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to You
Amen

Thursday 27th May

Heavenly Father, forgive me for being judgemental or overly critical in my praying yesterday. I realise that there are many people who miss out on the best things in life because they are working so hard simply to make ends meet and to provide for their family, sometimes taking on two or three jobs, or jobs that require long hours because the pay rate is so low

Rather than judging harshly or criticising such hard workers I admire their tenacity and their commitment to those they love, putting their family before themselves and laying down their lives for them. I realise that many people put aside their own ambitions to try to give their children the best they can and allow them opportunities they did not have themselves. Again, they deserve support and encouragement, not criticism or judgement

I realise many people do not have any choice but to put in the effort and the hours so I ask You Father to bless them in whatever way You can. Let them know great love in their lives, both from their families and from You. Let them know how much they are appreciated, sometimes their loved ones don't show appreciation I guess, but let them know how much You appreciate their efforts and open the eyes of those around them so they see the love which is being poured out for them

Lord Jesus, in love, You sacrificed Yourself for us and were raised up. May those, who, in love, sacrifice themselves be also raised up. The last first. Thank You for such love; Your love, on the cross
Amen

Wednesday 26th May

Heavenly Father, help me to remember that life is a marathon, not a sprint

The world record for 100 metres is at present 9.58 seconds which averages out at about 23.35 mph. The world record for the marathon is 2:01:39, a marathon being 26.2 miles. To set a marathon time less than 2 hours would need an average speed of about 13 mph

I doubt if anyone could maintain the sprint speed for the length of the marathon, I guess we all know it would be ridiculous to try! And yet sometimes we try to live our lives like this, going 'flat out' everyday, all day, trying to achieve more and more, and in doing so miss out on some of the more important things in life

How often does a relationship fail because one partner, or both, spends all hours working and then when the end comes and work is the root cause we hear, "...but I was doing it for you". How often does a parent miss events in a child's life because they "had to work"

Thank You for Sabbath days, holidays, coffee breaks, and tea breaks. Thank You for sleep, rest and relaxation. And thank You for this time in Your presence, early in the morning, and also throughout the day when I can stop everything I am doing and spend a few minutes simply resting in Your arms, knowing You love me and delight in me

Thank You that Jesus took time out to be alone with You. Thank You that Jesus took time out for meals. Thank You that He took time to sit and chat with His friends. Thank You that He slept in a boat during a storm. Help me to live life like Jesus
Amen

Tuesday 25th May

Heavenly Father, when we want someone to stop doing something we often use the phrase, "Cut it out!"

A teacher in a classroom might say it. A parent might say it to their child. I wonder if You would say it to me? Or if I would say it to you? Cut it out? I wonder if a person might say it to a doctor or surgeon. "Please, cut it out!"

It is a pruning term, a gardener would look at a vine, or a fig tree and if there was a branch that was not bearing fruit he or she might cut it out. A surgeon, speaking to a patient, having discovered a cancer may say, "The best way, perhaps the only way is surgery, we need to cut it out." I don't suppose anyone looks forward to the process, but I am fairly certain we look forward to the result. A clean bill of health, a healthy tree that bears fruit, an improvement in behaviour, peace and quiet in the classroom or the home

Father, You are the Gardener and You know the things in my life that need to be pruned so I ask You, "Cut it out". You know the things in my life that I need to change, get rid of, so I ask You to tell me, and show me, where to cut it out

Lord Jesus, You said, "If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or feet and be thrown into eternal fire"

You said a similar thing about our eyes and what we look at. I am sure You were speaking figuratively, but You meant what You said. Help me to cut it out, whatever it' is. Thank You
Amen

Monday 24th May

Heavenly Father, we are in a time of great trial as the pandemic tests our faith in You and in Jesus. Help us to remain faithful despite what we see going on around us and across the whole world

Strengthen our faith! Give us the same strength and depth of faith that You gave Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who, when faced with a fiery furnace said to King Nebuchadnezzar, "If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and He will deliver us from Your Majesty's hand. But even if He does not, we want you to know Your Majesty, that we will not serve your god's or worship the image of gold you have set up". Thank You that such strength and depth of faith is possible!

We see this all around the world where persecution of Your people is very real. Faith in Jesus can bring about imprisonment and even death. It has been this way since the time of the first disciples. When Stephen was stoned to death and Saul approved of his murder, we are told, "On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria"

Help me Lord Jesus to stay faithful. Now is not the time step back but the time to step up and step out. The whole world is watching to see if our trust in Jesus is real. Covid-19 may threaten us but we must not bow down to it, we may treat it with respect as the men did King Nebuchadnezzar, but not give in. Strengthen us. Deliver us
Amen
