Sunday 11th July

Heavenly Father, there can be no doubt that there are still people about like Saul of Tarsus! People who still breathe out murderous threats against Jesus' disciples today. In fact not only murderous threats but actually murder Christians today

Saul had stood by, looking after the coats of the men who stoned a disciple called Stephen to death. We are told, "Saul approved of their killing him". Saul was a devout man, he truly believed in God; but he did not believe in Jesus. Explaining his religious piety he said of himself, "If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the Law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the Law, faultless"

Saul believed he did everything right, he believed he was faultless. He persecuted and wanted to kill Christians! Then Jesus spoke to him as he was heading to Damascus to arrest more. Blinded by a light, Saul fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" In a few days Saul was transformed by the renewing of his mind. From being the persecutor of Jesus' followers he became passionate about seeing people become Christians

Lord Jesus, by Your Spirit speak to people today! "Why do you persecute me?" or "Why are you avoiding me?" Then open the eyes of the blind so they see You and tell others all about You. You did it for me!
Amen

Saturday 10th July

Heavenly Father, I can never come before You trusting in my own righteousness, I need an Advocate to plead for me. Thank You that You have provided an Advocate for me, Jesus, who by His Spirit is my Advocate

I cannot come before You having done anything to make me worthy. I cannot come before You having accomplished any sort of achievement that has made me acceptable. I cannot come before having reached a level of perfection that has made me good enough to speak on my own behalf. I have done nothing, achieved nothing, I am imperfect, and You would be right to condemn me

BUT Jesus has done everything that makes Him worthy, achieved everything You required to make Him acceptable, and lived a perfect, sinless life so His life speaks on His behalf, with the Spirit as a witness for Him; and He, the sinless Son of God has accredited this righteousness, His righteousness, to me, and to all who trust in His Name

Lord Jesus, what You have done can never be overestimated, nor fully understood! Your death on the cross paid for my sin and Your righteousness now makes me acceptable in God's sight

I will never know how much it cost to see my sin upon that cross, so here I am to worship, here I am to bow down, here I am to say that You're my God. What do I do with this freedom?

Help me to live my life guided by Your Spirit. Help me to love as You love. I know I can do nothing on my own, but can do all God desires through Christ who strengthens me. So be it
Amen

Friday 9th July

Heavenly Father, thank You for saving me, for filling me with Your Spirit so my cup overflows

Thank You that this is the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead and has enabled countless miracles in His Name since, in the scriptures through Paul, Simon Peter, John and others, and also through millions of unnamed disciples since

Lord Jesus, You said, "Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in Me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my Name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask anything in my Name, and I will do it"

It is hard to believe that anyone could do greater miracles than You but You said it so therefore I must believe it. There is power in Your Name. When Simon Peter and John healed a lame man so he got up and walked they proclaimed, "By faith in the Name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' Name and the faith that comes through Him that has completely healed him, as you can all see"

Thank You that prayer in the Name of Jesus is still effective today

Lord, strengthen our faith to trust in Your Word. Forgive us for the times when our faith is weak and doubt creeps in. Help us to remember the words of Jesus that we may ask anything in His Name and He will do it. May we hear Your voice, feel Your Spirit moving and see miracles happen. Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and forever
Amen

Thursday 8th July

Heavenly Father, I wonder what the Pharisees thought when Jesus said, "I AM the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep"

I wonder if phrases from the prophet Ezekiel ran through their minds? For this is what the Sovereign Lord says, "I myself will search for my sheep and look after them... I will rescue them... I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel... I will tend them in good pasture... I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down...  I will search for the lost and bring back strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak... I will shepherd the flock with justice"

Father, You said YOU would do all these things, and then Jesus said, "I AM the Good Shepherd”; surely this could mean only one thing: You are Jesus and Jesus is You

We are told how the Pharisees reacted, that they did not understand what Jesus was saying; the Jews who heard the words were divided. Many of them said, "He is demon-possessed and raving mad. Why listen to Him?” But others said, "These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?"

Lord Jesus, thank You for making it quite clear, You are the Good Shepherd, the God Shepherd. When asked, "If You are the Messiah, tell us plainly", You responded, "I and the Father are One"

Speaking figuratively, speaking plainly, Jesus, You are God, the Word made flesh. The Lord IS my Shepherd, I shall not want. King David knew it, and now I know it! Thank You
Amen

Wednesday 7th July

Heavenly Father, the list I referred to yesterday really did 'go on'! "People will be... unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of themselves rather than lovers of God - having a form of godliness but denying its power"

Given that the list already stated that people would be "lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving..." it can be of little surprise that the advice which follows is, "Have nothing to do with such people". But I was one of them! And yet, You came to seek and save the lost. And You want us to do what Jesus did.

Lord Jesus, You told Your followers, "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you". I know You spent a lot of Your time with 'undesirables', referred to as "tax collectors and sinners"

And when You heard the disciples questioned about this You said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance". The sick, the dead, lepers, demon-possessed? Untouchables! But You touched them all! And said, "Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons"

I once was lost, but now I'm found. Amazing grace! "Freely you have received; freely give"
Amen

Tuesday 6th July

Heavenly Father, I wonder what concerns You most today?

I know that as a husband, father, and grandfather my concern for my wife and each of my children and grandchildren varies from day to day depending on their circumstances, but my love for each of them never varies, it never changes. I know that when a problem arises for any one of them I want to do whatever I can to help, even though there are many things I cannot 'fix', I can always give a word of encouragement and I can always pray. And I always do pray

Thank You that I can always bring anything and everything to You so You know what concerns me most. My greatest concern is always my family. I think Your greatest concern is us, people. We are always Your greatest concern. Your greatest concern is shown in Your coming to earth

As we were wandering further and further away from You and becoming less and less like You, no longer "in Your image" but more and more conforming to the pattern of this world, You came here to walk with us, talk with us, and show us the Way we should live

What concerns You most is that there are still so many people who are still far away from You, "people who are lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love..." and the list goes on. Your concern is for such people

You came to seek and save the lost. May I join Your search party. But first, renew my mind, so I think like You
Amen

Monday 5th July

Heavenly Father, thank God there is a God to thank. Thank You for the breath that is within me!

The Psalmist reminds us, "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord". So what does he say next? "Praise the Lord"

Where should we praise You? "Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in His mighty heavens"

Why? "Praise Him for His acts of power; praise Him for His surpassing greatness"

How should we give You praise? Noisily!! "Praise Him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise Him with the harp and lyre, with timbrel and dancing, praise Him with the strings and pipe, praise Him with the clash of cymbals, praise Him with resounding cymbals". Sometimes we can be rather restrained!

We don't always want to let go, let our feelings be too 'over the top'. It seems that King David did not have this restriction!! "Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets"

Thank You for Your text messages to us! "Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever"

Thank You for Your Revelation to John: then I heard every creature in Heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying, "To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honour and glory and power, for ever and ever!" In Heaven and on earth, let everything that has breath praise the Lord! If we keep quiet the stones will cry out
Amen
