Sunday 3rd October

Heavenly Father, I know I need a change of heart. When we set out on a path, choosing to do something or say something in anger, the only thing that will stop us is a change of heart. Even if we set out with the best of intentions we are still to take great care

You tell us, "In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry". Another passage tells us, "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires". It is so easy to lash out in anger

King David's anger and his desire to seek vengeance on Nabal, was way beyond what was right in the circumstances. He said in his anger, "May God deal with David, be it ever so severely, if by morning I leave alive one male of all that belong to him!"

On meeting Nabal's wife, Abigail, she explained that Nabal was a fool and that God should deal with him. "When the Lord has fulfilled for my Lord every good thing He promised concerning him and has appointed him ruler over Israel, my Lord will not have on his conscience the staggering burden of needless bloodshed or of having avenged himself"

David had a change of heart, saying to Abigail, "Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you today to meet me. May you be blessed for your good judgement and for keeping me from bloodshed this day and from avenging myself with my own hands"

May I always be quick to listen and slow to speak. Thank You for changes of heart
Amen

Saturday 2nd October

Heavenly Father, what does the world need most right now? A song from the 1960's tells us: "What the world needs now is love, sweet love, it's the only thing that there's just too little of. What the world needs now is love, sweet love, no, not just for some, but for everyone"

What a difference it would make if we could grasp this and apply it to everything and everyone. This concept did not begin with this song in 1965, it is Your desire, Your plan for the world; it always was and always will be

You created us in love, to have loving relationships with each other and with You. You are at the very centre of love! Your Word tells us so much about love; in fact the whole of scripture is about love, Your love for us

We love because You first loved us. You loved us so much that You came to the earth to show us how much You love us! "God so loved the world that He gave His One and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life"

How do we know what love is? We love because You first loved us. Whether we know it or not, whether we realise it or not, we can only love because You put love in our hearts. Your Word tells us, "We know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever loves lives in God, and God in them"

Father there are many people who would say they love others but do not believe in You or Jesus. Help us all to see that we can only love because we are created in Your image, and that You are love, and seen in Jesus
Amen

Friday 1st October

Heavenly Father, thank You for each gift of the Spirit which You give to Your children, each one given for the common good

Your gifts include a message of wisdom, or a message of knowledge; a gift of healing or miraculous powers; prophecy and distinguishing between spirits; speaking in different kinds of tongues and the interpretation of tongues

St Paul wrote to the Christians in Rome, "We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully"

Lord Jesus, help me to hear Your voice, just as Lazarus did when You called him out of the grave. Help me to hear Your voice just as a sheep hears it's shepherd. Help me to discern Your voice, Your Spirit, and to reject any other voice I hear.

Help me to remember You have always been faithful to me

Help me to remember Your love for me, which never changes

Help me to use any gift You give me wisely and under the guidance of Your Spirit as it is for the building up of the Church

Help me to always speak and act in love, enabled by Your love

Help me to remember, "The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit." May my tongue, what I say, always be soothing, a tree of life

Thank You
Amen

Thursday 30th September

Heavenly Father, I am quite sure, no, more than that, absolutely certain, I would not want to live in a country where it was well known the every judge was corrupt, where any politician could be bribed, where every person did as they pleased knowing there would be no consequences, where religious leaders placed such heavy burdens on people they were constantly bent low with guilt and shame knowing there was nothing they could do to appease the 'hierarchy' and so despising them

It was into a world such as this that You came; the Creator of the universe, the maker of all things, born into a corrupt and broken world, not just a god among men but God among men. One would think, I suppose I would think, that this would be a day of reckoning, when mankind would pay for what it had done to the world, when mankind would pay for what they had done to each other

And I suppose I would say that people would deserve it! I would deserve it. We should get what we deserve. You recognised this, "All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of the flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath"

And so the day of reckoning came, a crucifixion, but not mine, Yours, God on the cross, Jesus dying a criminal’s death to pay for all sin for all time, including mine. "Because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions, it is by grace you have been saved"
Amen

Wednesday 29th September

Heavenly Father, it is quite easy getting up to pray, to meet with You early in the morning; what is not so easy is living out what I pray early in the morning throughout the rest of the day

You tell us, "Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain". Obviously I am not building a house today, nor am I standing watch over a city, very few people will be doing this! There must be a reason for telling us this?

The house must be my life? And You are building it? My life is the city, and You must watch over it? Am I involved in building the house of my life? It would seem so, as the builders are working! I also need to keep watch over my city, my life, as there are men standing watch!

Jesus said, "I AM the True Vine, and my Father is the Gardener... I AM the Vine, you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing". We can bear much fruit? Yes! But only if we remain in Jesus and He in us

St Paul writes to the people in Corinth, "Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain". Our work is not in vain as long as we do it "in the Lord". Without You, it achieves nothing

We can't do anything without Jesus, but Jesus doesn't do without us? It is our hands You use, our feet that walk, our mouths that speak, but as long as I am with You, in You and You are with me, in me, my work will not be in vain. Thank You. Wow!
Amen

Tuesday 28th September

Heavenly Father, Psalm 88 must be one of the most desperate cries for help imaginable, but it begins by proclaiming Your salvation: "Lord, You are the God who saves me; day and night I cry out to You. May my prayer come before You; turn Your ear to my cry"

The Psalmist then tells just how he is feeling! "I am overwhelmed with troubles and my life draws near to death". So much is going on he feels like he is about to die. "I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am like one without strength". The pit - hell!

His strength fails him. "I am set apart with the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom You remember no more, who are cut off from Your care"

When a debt cannot be paid it is written off. When a car is so damaged it can never be driven again it is a 'write off'. In one version of this verse the Psalmist describes himself as 'written off'. "Your wrath lies heavily on me; You have overwhelmed me with all Your waves. You have taken from me my closest friends and have made me repulsive to them. I am confined and cannot escape"

Lord Jesus, is this how You felt as You were on the cross? "My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?"

The Psalmist asks, "Do You show Your wonders to the dead? Do their spirits rise up and praise You? Is Your love declared in the grave, Your faithfulness in Destruction?... But I cry to You for help, Lord; in the morning my prayer comes before You"

Jesus, in the grave, written off, but raised from the dead, so I am written in Your 'Book of Life'
Amen

Monday 27th September

Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus, the One whose words are holy and true and who holds the key of David. Thank You that what He opens no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open

Lord Jesus, thank You for what You have done for me, what You have done for all who trust in Your Name; You have opened the door of Heaven and no one can close it. You know our deeds. You know we have little strength, but that we have kept Your Word and not denied Your Name

Holy Spirit, help us to make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy, and we will see the Lord. Help us to see to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. The enemy is malicious and will do all he can to cause division

King David begins a Psalm, "How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity!" He then says, "It is as if the dew of Mount Hermon were falling on Mount Zion". That is about 99 miles away, which seems to indicate quite a miracle! But David concludes, "There the Lord bestows His blessing, even life evermore". You are the God of miracles!

Help us to stay alert and of sober mind as our enemy, the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour

Father, help us to make sure that the enemy goes hungry today, for as we submit to You he must flee

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, now and evermore
Amen
