News from the Deanery

24th October 2021

JO WOODEarly in September Revd Jo Wood was licensed as (deep breath): Priest-in-Charge of the Ormesby Benefice (Ormesby St Margaret, Ormesby St Michael, St George's in Rollesby) and Minister with Pastoral Responsibility for All Saints, Filby, and St Peter & St Paul, Mautby. Phew! Pam Spychal reports

Sadly, I was unable to attend this event in my capacity as Deanery Lay Chair, because of a previous commitment, but I was told that everything had gone well and the event was “lovely”. Luckily, I was able to attend Jo’s first service at All Saints’, Filby. I had driven past Church Lane, Filby so many times when I worked in Fleggburgh and it was a delight to finally drive up Church Lane and find this delightful little church. I parked in the wrong place, but the Sidesperson let me off, as the service was about to start. I wonder if Jo was nervous, she certainly didn’t show it

I already knew the Deanery Reps from the days when they put on Open the Book assemblies for the school in Fleggburgh. Open the Book days were joyous occasions, eagerly awaited by staff and children alike. If you ever get the chance to join an Open the Book team, don’t hesitate – we all had so much fun!

During the last hymn (we were allowed to read the words, but not sing – agony!), my senses were alerted to the sound of a kettle being boiled. Yes! We had tea, coffee and biscuits after the service. This was a good chance to get to know Jo and a few parishioners a little better. Jo comes from an urban team ministry in the Midlands and so a rural benefice in Norfolk is quite a change. When I recently contacted her she said “I'm getting there! It's been a bit of a whirlwind and I've now managed to get round all my churches on a Sunday”. Well done Jo!
