Sunday 27th October
Heavenly Father, every day millions of people will put their trust in someone they have never met; it may be a taxi driver, a train driver, a ship's captain, or an airline pilot, but unless there has been a coincidence it is likely to be a complete stranger who is being trusted. Unless it is the first day in the job the person I am trusting will be experienced and will have travelled the route before. I guess I would be more trusting if I knew the pilot had many years’ experience!
Yesterday I put my trust in someone I had never met to fix my phone! Why did I trust this complete stranger? I guess it was because the shop's website was full of complimentary reviews praising the workmanship, the timing, and the cost, and there was a queue of people all handing their phones to the young man at the counter. He told me the cost of the repair and that it would be an hour. An hour later I had my phone back and it looked brand new
Father, it seems strange to me that we place our trust in flawed, broken human beings we do not know, have never met, yet we are reluctant to place our trust in You! You are perfectly trustworthy, in fact perfect love! Perfectly good . Perfectly wise. Perfectly holy. Perfectly faithful. Perfectly righteous. Perfectly just. Perfect peace. Perfect power. (My devotional reminded me of Your perfection!)
Father, forgive me for not trusting You, Jesus, Holy Spirit, in the way I trust strangers. I know You, I know You love me, and I can trust You. Only You gave Your life for me! Thank You

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your promises to lift us up. There are so many 'put downs' where people will lift themselves up by putting someone else down, but it seems You work in a different way
St Peter says You tell us to humble ourselves under Your mighty hand, that in due time You will lift us up. And in James' letter he says "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up". You do not say You will put us down but that we should be prepared to humble ourselves?
Just the other day, You reminded me what You require of me: to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with You, my God. We live in a world where 'humble' is seen as a negative, but You regard humility very highly, or so it seems to me as You list it in three things You require. It is obviously not the very humble, hand-wringing, humility of Uriah Heap, as described by Charles Dickens. So what is humility to You?
Let me echo King David's words "My heart is not proud, Lord, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content". And You will lift me up so I soar, on wings like an eagle
Father, help me to remember who I am. And who You are! Creator of the universe, my God. Jesus is my role model, a life of sacrifice, the One who made Himself nothing, who You lifted up and gave the Name above all names. It is all about what You do! Who You say I am. Thank You

Heavenly Father, where I live it is unlikely, though not impossible, that a snake, a viper, would fasten itself onto my hand! Apparently there are adders living in a wood nearby but I have never seen one. They are recognised by the zigzag markings on their back
In Acts we are told that St Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. Those who saw it expected Paul to die, not surprisingly, but Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects
Father, while it is unlikely that I will be bitten by a snake today, the unseen enemy, satan, the snake, is always trying to bite. Thank You, that, because of Jesus, I have, like St Paul, shaken the snake off into the fire and my life is now safe, the ill effects healed
Father, so often we are bitten by satan, we don't see him, don't recognise the bite or when we are bitten, but go on suffering the consequences in our lives, often for years. It may simply be what someone says, something innocuous, or something someone does that hurts, but once we are bitten, the poison starts to spread and our lives are affected, our relationships tainted, our vision blurred
Father, I know You can help us to shake off the snake, heal the hurts so that we no longer suffer the ill effects; we can forgive and be forgiven. Help me to spot and avoid the snake but if bitten to shake the enemy off into the fire so there are no ill effects. Thank You for Your loving care and protection
Thursday 24th October
Heavenly Father, I realise I can talk about food, think about food, read about food, look at food, take all the ingredients in the recipe book and cook food, I can even take the food out of the oven and put it on the plate before me but, unless I eat it, it will do me no good at all
In the same way, I can talk about Jesus, think about Jesus, read about Jesus, look at Jesus, take every word that Jesus spoke and mull them over, letting them simmer in my mind, I can even go out into the world fully aware of what Jesus requires, but if I do not do what He says it will do me no good. And it will not do the world any good
What is it You require of me? Your Word tells me, Old Testament and New Testament: "He has shown you, O mortal man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God"
Jesus said "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets". You do not want me to talk about compassion, You want me to be compassionate. You do not want me to talk about mercy, You want me to be merciful. You do not want me to talk about kindness, You want me to be kind. Actions speak louder than words
Jesus demonstrated what He said in what He did! He spoke about forgiveness and forgave people, even those who crucified Him. He talked about healing and healed people. He talked about sacrifice and gave Himself. May I act as I speak. Don't just say, be... Don't just talk, do... Thank You
Wednesday 23rd October
Heavenly Father, help me to be a good role model, firstly for my wife and family who see me as You see me, when we are alone, behind closed doors; then for my friends and colleagues who see me as You do, when I am out in the open, living and working among them; and lastly for strangers who see me, or hear me, as You do, as I pass by
Thank You for Jesus, our perfect role model; help me to imitate everything about Him! Help me to imitate His love, His compassion, His forgiveness, patience and kindness, His servant-heart and so much more
Thank You also for St Paul, who encourages us to imitate him and the Way He lived, saying "If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from His love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being likeminded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind"
Help me to do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, help me to value others above myself, not looking to my own interests but to the interests of others
Help me to do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that I may become blameless and pure, Your child, without fault in a warped and crooked generation. I can only model any of this by Your Spirit alive in me
Fill me again, let me have the same mind-set as Jesus, who made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant! Not my will but Yours be done, Your good, pleasing and perfect will. Thank You
Tuesday 22nd October
Heavenly Father, we have an expression which is used quite commonly to convey the meaning 'suddenly' and it is "all at once...". It may not be entirely true in every circumstance as not everything happens all at once and events often unfold over a period of time, however it is entirely appropriate for the moment in history when Jesus died on the cross
Lord Jesus, as You uttered Your final words on the cross "It is finished", the sins of every person both before You and after You, suddenly, all, at once, were paid for by Your sacrifice. You are unlike any other high priest, You do not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for Your own sin, because You committed no sin, and then for the sins of the people
You were sacrificed for our sins, once for all, when You offered Yourself. All at once we are cleansed, our sin is paid for, and yet we seem to insist on paying our own way, but You have declared that this is not possible, You are the Way!
The Prophet Isaiah warns "All of us have become like one who is unclean and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away". Nothing I do can save me, even my most righteous acts!
However, all at once my sin is washed away, at the moment I accept what Jesus did on the cross. Now, nothing can separate me from God's love! Now, there is no condemnation! Now, I am acceptable in God's sight! Now, I am forgiven! All at once. Thank You for loving me so much. I accept all You offer. Thank You
Monday 21st October
Heavenly Father, I guess the oldest trick in the Book, Your Book, the Bible, is the first one "Did God really say...?" Entering into conversation with the enemy, believing the enemies lies is the start of, and at the heart of, all our problems
The question remains, "Who do I believe, You or the enemy?" When satan says "Did God really say...?" the answer is "Yes, He did!" and then throw the Book at him.
It is exactly what Jesus did, He turned to the Book and trusted in what the Book said. The Bible is full of promises and You always keep Your promises. I read 'No matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. And so through Him the "Amen" is spoken to us to the glory of God’
I have a little plaque which has been in my office for years which says "God Answers Prayer. He promised it, I believe it, that settles it!"
When Jesus died for me on the cross and He said "It is finished, "the sign on the cross could easily have said "The buck stops here!" Jesus took the blame and paid the price for all my sin, "All of it?"
Who asks that question? "Did God really say...?" The answer is "Yes, He did!"
Thank You that I can trust 100% in Your Word, in what You and Jesus promised and what Jesus did on the cross! "Has Jesus really prepared a place for you?" The answer "Yes He has!" He promised it, I believe it, that settles it
Thank You for Your Word. The buck stops with Jesus and my trust is in Him. "It is finished." Paid in full; the buck stops here. Thank You
