Sunday 2nd August

Heavenly Father, when a war is won the enemy surrenders to the victor who then releases the captives, those who have been held as prisoners of war, but also those innocent civilians who were not involved in the combat.  Cities full of people are liberated, camps full of prisoners are released from captivity
When Jesus died on the cross, this is what happened, the war against sin and evil, against the enemy, satan, the adversary, was won.  Jesus declared, "It is finished!"  The price required to pay for our sin was "paid in full!" and Your justice was satisfied, Your Law was fulfilled
But the enemy is a cheat and a liar, a terrorist in hiding, who now tries to rob us of the freedom Your Son paid for, deny us the victory He won on the cross.  Satan is a sniper, his bullets are aimed at our hearts and our heads; he whispers lies to us, lies being his chief weapon
You tell us to put on the full armour You provide, including "the shield of faith, with which we can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one".  Whether we see them as bullets or arrows, they have one purpose, to deny the Truth and sow seeds of doubt about our freedom in Christ.  The Breastplate of Righteousness protects our hearts and the Helmet of Salvation protects our minds but the adversary will continue firing
The Truth is the King of Love is my Shepherd whose goodness never fails.  Even though I may be wounded by satan's lies Your Truth, Your Word brings healing and restoration.  Lord, I surrender to Your Way, Jesus. Thank You

Saturday 1st August

Heavenly Father, help me to show Your love today.  Fill me with Your Holy Spirit

Without Your Spirit I have nothing to give a hurting world, I have nothing that people would be interested in seeing and nothing to say that people would want to listen to.  However, when I am Yours, and Yours alone, when I am overflowing streams of living water, which people can dip into then I have something to give, something to see, something worth hearing, something worth experiencing
Lord Jesus, You said "Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them".  May someone dip their toe in today and find refreshing.  When I have passion, when I have fire in my belly, fire in my heart, then people will be attracted to the flame that is burning
Your Word reminds me to " into flame the gift of God, which is in you..."  May the gift of Your Spirit be evident today and invite people into conversation.  Jesus said, "I AM the Light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life"
He then told the disciples, "You are the light of the world... In the same way let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven"
Lord Jesus, be glorified today in every one of Your children
Heavenly Father, be glorified through Your Son, the Way we know You
Holy Spirit, glorify the Son through His power and love at work in us and through us.  Help us to run the race set before us and win the prize

Friday 31st July

Lord Jesus, You said, "Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in Me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father"
What sort of things had You been doing while You lived among us?  A song we sing lists just a few of the things You did:

With a prayer You fed the hungry,
With a cry You stilled the storm;
With a look You had compassion on the desperate and forlorn.
With a touch You healed the leper,
With a shout You raised the dead;
With a word expelled the demons,
With a blessing broke the bread

St Paul wrote to the people in Ephesus, and through the Bible, to us, "Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever. Amen!"
And St John finished his Gospel by saying, "Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written"
It is easy to think I am the odd one out, that these words apply to everyone else but not to me; of course the enemy will encourage such thoughts, but I must and will hold on to the Truth, to You, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and live the life You have planned, not trusting in my own strength or ability, but trusting in Your Word, Your promises
Lord, help me to do whatever You ask of me today, by Your Spirit, to Your glory

Thursday 30th July

Heavenly Father, we seem to live in a world full of broken relationships, broken promises, broken vows, and broken lives and yet this is not Your Way.  We seem to live in a world which so often can be mundane, ordinary, humdrum, boringly monotonous, as each day seems the same and one day melts into another, and yet this is not Your Way
There is so much to discover, so much to enjoy, so much to thrill us that Your plan is for eternity, we will need that long to find out all You want us to know; and even then there will be more
The Truth is that we hardly scratch the surface of all that You want us to know about life, about love, about creation, about people, about our life partner, about You.  How could we possibly know all there is to know about an Infinite God with our finite minds, about Your Spirit when we are caught in our temporal bodies?
Thank You for Jesus, Your Way of revealing Your very nature, Your essence, to us
Thank You for Your Holy Spirit who affirms the Truth to us, opens our hearts, souls and minds to start grasping Your unending love for us, and yet it can never be fully known
Father give us strength, determination, desire, perseverance, to carry on learning more about You; and give us more of the same to help us learn more about the people we share our lives with, those we love and cherish, our partner and our children, even strangers we may meet each day.  Help us to invest in one another knowing that with You at the centre life can never be mundane, ordinary or humdrum.  Thank You

Wednesday 29th July

Heavenly Father, I have only one saving grace, Jesus.  I have only one redeeming feature, Jesus
I know I rely entirely on Jesus for my salvation.  It can never be what I do that earns me my salvation, it is what Jesus did for me, what He did for mankind, on the cross, that accomplished the forgiveness of sins and thus salvation for all who believe and trust in Him
St Paul wrote to the people of Corinth "For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures".  Michael Card's grandfather used the same words as part of a sermon he preached, "I have no hope except that I believe that Christ died for my sins, according to the scriptures. I expect to swing out into eternity on that"
The Bible tells us, "As the time approached for Him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem".  A prophetic word from Isaiah about this said, "Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame. He who vindicates me is near. Who then will bring charges against me?  Let us face each other!  Who is my accuser?  Let him confront me!"
Thank You Jesus that, because of what You have done for us, we can echo these words as the enemy tries to accuse us.  Because of Your sacrifice we can say "I will not be put to shame.  He who vindicates me is near!"  Help me to set my face like flint, to seek You with all my heart to know You as my Redeemer, my God.  Saved by grace

Tuesday 28th July

Heavenly Father, It was four years ago on this date that I began to write a prayer each day in response to a question asked at a church leadership meeting: "What can we do to encourage people to pray?"  My hand went up and I said I would write a prayer each day and send it to the leadership team; they could say amen or reply with another prayer. That first prayer was this:

28 July 2016:
Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, May Your Holy Spirit give me good guidance throughout this day. May my thoughts be thoughtful and holy, my words kind and wise, and my actions helpful and friendly. Where there is conflict between Your Holy Spirit and my will, help me to have the strength to follow Your Way.  May Your church grow in love for You to be a blessing to all who are served by us in Your Holy Name
Amazingly You have met with me every day since and the number of people who receive the prayer has grown. But the aim of the prayer has never changed, to encourage people to pray
Father, thank You for being with us as we pray
Thank You that as we pray You hear us and share Your heart with us
Thank You that when we pray You respond to our prayers and things change, mostly our hearts
I am always reminded, "God is good and good at being God!"  You are always doing good!  It is Your very nature to do good.  I may not always see it, understand how or where You are doing good, but I know You are!  Over 10,000 Amens have been added as well as other prayers
Thank You for being God, for being here every day.  I love You Lord

Monday 27th July

Heavenly Father, I was just asking myself the question, "What would be my perfect day?"  I quickly followed by asking You, "What would be Your perfect day?" but just as quickly realised this was more religious than real; trying to be holier than I actually am, as though I could satisfy You by asking that question instead of talking to You about my perfect day!

I realised a lot of things 'quickly' it seems, as I realised it will not include my youngest granddaughter playing around my feet as I meet with You in prayer right now, and may not happen for some time
I also realised it will not include singing silly songs to one of my other granddaughters while she interrupts and changes the words; one of our favourite games
Nor will it include my third granddaughter sitting on my lap, laughing with me as we watch "Tom and Jerry" together
Nor will it include my newest grandchild, my month old grandson who I have yet to hold and tell him how much I love him
I will however be able to tell my wife how much I love her today

Father, thank You that I can have such perfect thoughts and look forward to such perfect moments in days which may well not be perfect
I know there are many who do not have such perfection to enjoy nor look forward to and I ask that Your perfect love will touch and heal hearts that are broken through separation, however that separation may have come about. We live our lives in an imperfect and broken world. A perfect day has hearing and saying, "I love you" at its heart.  And You
