Sunday 17th January

Heavenly Father, music is generally based on four parts, the tune, the bass, the harmony, and the decorative lines, perhaps a counter melody or descant. All the parts are based upon the harmony so the music has a common foundation from which to work
Some music is written out in full and exactly the same notes are played in every performance, although certain elements are open to interpretation so each performance is unique. In some music, jazz for example, the players improvise around the four parts, to a certain extent creating new music every time!
In dance, the steps for each person can be choreographed so the dance is the same each time. In other circumstances everyone improvises their own steps in time to the music so no two dances are the same
I guess I am wondering about life; is Your plan set so we have to follow the exact steps You have ordained or do we improvise within the plan You have in mind? Do we sing the tune You have written or do we create new tunes within the harmony You have created? The Bible tells me, "In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps"
If what I am doing is good and fits Your plan, will You bless it so there will be fruit. Love is the harmony upon which all Your plans are based, if I am loving, is it likely I am following Your Way? "The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in Him". Guide my steps today so they delight You and fit within Your plan. Your will be done. Thank You

Saturday 16th January

Heavenly Father, I watched a few short videos of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dancing yesterday, filmed in black and white, well before I was born. It is always amazing to me to see the synchronicity of the dancers and the music. Being perfectly in time, generally matching step for step, occasionally differing but still in time together with the music, they must have worked incredibly hard in rehearsal to reach that level of performance, and yet it looked effortless. Somebody, somewhere, said at some time, something like, "Ginger did everything Fred did, except backwards and in high heels!" Both were great dancers and even today I enjoy their beautiful symmetry
There is another well-known quote, "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass; it's about learning how to dance in the rain". The Bible tells us King David danced before You with all his might as the people of Israel brought the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem; no rehearsal, no partner, just extemporised jubilation. David tried to keep in step with You, and although he failed sometimes, he always came back to You to seek You Way
I may not be a great dancer, 'I am no Fred Astaire' but I can do what David did, look foolish, possibly be despised, as David was by Michal, but  I can dance for You, and with You, even in the middle of the storm
Help me to be in step with You, to always come back to You when I go off in a different direction. Choreograph my day so I move in time with You. May my steps always be guided by You

Friday 15th January

Heavenly Father, Jesus said to the disciples, and to us too, His disciples today, "In this world you will have trouble".  I can imagine people all over the world saying, "Well, You got that right!" I wonder though how many go on to the next phrase? "But take heart! I have overcome the world"
Even as I pray this, I wonder 'What does Jesus mean? He has overcome the world?' If there is a problem, how do I overcome it? If there is an enemy, how do I defeat it?
I know I have overcome a problem when it is behind me, when it is a problem no longer. If I defeat an enemy then that enemy no longer has power over me, no longer threatens me. So how could Jesus say that we should take heart because He had overcome the world?
Jesus would go on to defeat the greatest enemy we have, death. In His life every problem He encountered, He overcame: hunger, thirst, sickness, disease. In the end, faced with the greatest problem, the sins of the world, He did what needed to be done; He paid for them by His death on the cross. He showed He had overcome when He returned, death defeated, the sins of the world paid for
Jesus said, "A time is coming, and in fact has come, when you will be scattered, each to your own home". I can imagine people saying, "Well, He got that right!" What does the future hold? Troubles, in this life we have them. What can we do? Sink, or swim?
Father, help me to trust Jesus to lift me out of the stormy sea until all my troubles are behind me and death defeated

Thursday 14th January

Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus gave everything for us. His whole life was given for us as was His death on the cross
Thank You that the Gospel writers record the history of His conception, birth, life, and death in detail
And thank You that each of them also record the events of the third day when Jesus was resurrected. The details vary a little, the emphasis is placed on different aspects as they are remembered and recorded, but the most important point noted is that Jesus returned, raised from the dead, just as He had said He would be
And thank You that Jesus' Ascension is also recorded. Having told the disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the power that would come upon them, the Holy Spirit that would enable them to be witnesses for Him in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth we are told, "After He said this, He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight"
Thank You that the promised Holy Spirit came upon the disciples as they waited in Jerusalem and that the disciples did witness to people in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth and that since that time people have continued to witness by the power of the Holy Spirit so that today there are millions of people repeating the same story of Salvation
It is why I am here now, in Your presence, to pray for Your Spirit to make me bold in witnessing today. I cannot do this on my own, I need You to open my mouth with Your Word, by Your Spirit! Please do

Wednesday 13th January

Heavenly Father, thank You for getting me home safely. There was a time I thought I would be lost forever!
Very occasionally I have been to London, not recently, but years ago, I drove into the centre of London with a street map to guide me and got completely lost. A closed road, a one-way street, a wrong turn, however it happened I got lost and seemed to going round in circles. Road signs would seem to indicate I was heading in the right direction, for me basically north, and then minutes later I would see a sign which showed I was heading south. I prayed and prayed that You would show me the way and eventually You must have because I got home, so that is why I can say, "Thank You for getting me home safely"
And I can also say this to You about my whole life, for every day You have brought me home safely. Good days, bad days, work days, holidays, healthy days, ill days, sunny days, and snowy days, no matter what kind of day, You have brought me home safely
And I can also say that when this life is over, and I am on my deathbed, if I am in a bed, I realise it can happen anytime, anywhere, unannounced or diagnosed, You will bring me home. Wherever I go You are with me. You have promised that whether I turn to the right or to the left, my ears will hear a voice behind me, saying, "This is the Way; walk in it"
Thank You for Your Word, the Bible, Your written guide. Thank You for Jesus, Your Living Word to us and Your Spirit, an ever present help in times of trouble!

Tuesday 12th January

Heavenly Father, the journey every one of us is on is a long one, a lifelong journey, and it is fraught with dangers. One wrong step can lead to disaster, or at least a great deal of pain
I found this to be so when I stepped on a muddy patch while walking a few nights ago slipped and fell, my elbow digging into my ribs as I hit the ground, and finding my wrist and knee also bruised when I got home to assess the damage
It can also be that a few careless words can bring about hurt too. We probably all say things we regret and wish we could take the words back, but we also know this is not possible. When this happens, what can we do?
If we fall we need to get up and carry on walking till we get home. Wrong words? Seek forgiveness
As we go through the lifelong journey, now under the shadow of Covid-19, we may often hear ourselves asking, "Are we there yet?"  The answer is no, there is a long way to go, with many more twists and turns, but we must keep going
Sir Harry Lauder, and later Kenneth McKellar, sang "Keep right on to the end of the road, keep right on to the end. Tho' the way be long, let your heart be strong, keep right on round the bend. Tho' you're tired and weary still journey on till you come to your happy abode, where all the love you've been dreaming of will be there at the end of the road"
There is a long way to go until this pandemic is behind us, so we must tread carefully, in our actions and in our words. Help me to do this always, until I am home, safe with You

Monday 11th January

Heavenly Father, I will probably get through this day but there are many thousands across the world who will not. I cannot be certain I will get through, some already know they will not, but whether I do or whether I don't, what is the point, what is the purpose?
The big question: Why are we here? Some say, "You are born, you live, you die"; others, "You are born, you suffer, you die". But the question remains, why are we here? There is also the question, "What next?"
Father, I am here now, and my question to You, now, is "What next?" Not what is next after life, but what next now? The Bible tells us, "We are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do". You have a purpose for us, for me; surely it is not just to live, or to suffer, but You say it is to "do good works". And You have them already prepared "in advance for us to do"
Father, how do I know what these works are? Have You got a 'to-do' list somewhere? Is there a plan I can use?
Lord Jesus, You knew what to do every moment of the day, You came with and for a purpose
Holy Spirit, You know the thoughts of God, help me to know His thoughts today, His plan for today. I know Your plan is good

I know You are always working for good. I know the works you have prepared for me are good; show me the Way. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life
Father, I come to You the only Way I can and ask You to show me the good works You have planned for me today
