Sunday 25th July

Heavenly Father, help me to avoid all distractions. It is so easy to get a 'bee in my bonnet' about something which leads me away from You and focuses my mind on something else
I am not talking about the tasks of the day which are necessary, the things I have to do, I am thinking more of those times when I can relax, rest, be 'busy doing nothing!' It is when work is over we can easily be distracted
When King David was pursued by his enemies he fully focused on You: "All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I cut them down. They surrounded me on every side, but in the Name of the Lord I cut them down. They swarmed around me like bees, but they were consumed as quickly as burning thorns; in the Name of the Lord I cut them down. I was pushed back and about to fall, but the Lord helped me. The Lord is my strength and my defence; He has become my Salvation"
It was when David was not focused that trouble came knocking: "In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war... David remained in Jerusalem... One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her". Temptation reared its ugly head
Lord, I know the enemy will pursue me! Lord, be my strength, my Salvation. Father, lead me not into temptation, but deliver me from evil. No bees in my bonnet. I have no desire to be stung, so I focus on You alone!
songs for today:
Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer
I Hear the Sound (Distant Thunder)

Saturday 24th July

Heavenly Father, when we are in negotiations with someone, regarding a purchase, or selling a property, or perhaps discussing a job opportunity, we may reach the point where we ask, "Is that your final word?"
Thank You for making it clear to us about Your final Word: "In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed Heir of all things, and through whom He also made the universe". Jesus is Your first and last Word, Your final offer, Your final offering. There will be no other offer, no further negotiation, no other Prophet, Jesus is Your final Word
The 'Days of the Prophets' are over; there may be prophetic utterances, but they will all be about Jesus. No longer does Your Spirit rest on the Prophets, now Your Spirit lives within Your adopted children
You told Jeremiah, "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken Me, the Spring of Living Water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water". Forgive me for times I try to rely on my own well, my own wisdom
Thank You for Jesus. We do not come to a well that is dry but to a never ending stream. Jesus said, "Whoever believes in Me, as Scripture has said, rivers of Living Water will flow from within them"
Father, thank You that there as many Life giving streams as there are Christians; but One Source, Your Spirit flowing from each of us; help us to flood the nations
songs for today:
God the uncreated One
Let Your Living Water flow over my soul

Friday 23rd July

Heavenly Father, on his missionary journey, Paul and his companions came to the border of Mysia, "they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to." I wonder if there is a principle here which I can apply to my life? If God says "No," it is because He has a better plan?
We are told they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas and during the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us". From that change of plan churches were planted in Philippi and Thyatira. Earlier Paul had his plans changed when Jesus spoke to him on the road to Damascus, saying, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" I wonder if there is truth here which applies to many people, not only Saul?
Saul was blinded by the Light but when Ananias prayed for him, "Brother Saul, the Lord - Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here - has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit". Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptised. Rather than persecuting Christians Paul, as he became known, travelled the world winning people for Jesus, planting churches
Could it be that there are many people who are blind to Jesus who need scales to be removed from their eyes through a prayer, like that of Ananias? Lord Jesus, change my plan to Your plan, the better plan, so others may see
songs for today:
Change my heart O God
Open our eyes, Lord

Thursday 22nd July

Heavenly Father, when someone begins to believe in something new or see things differently, those who know them may comment, “Well, you've certainly changed your tune!”. Thank You that this can be a good thing
There have been many different tunes that have been composed for the words of Psalm 23 but the Psalm itself remains the same. Slightly variations in the words are there, but the meaning and the depth of the words cannot be changed
Jesus said, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away". Psalm 23: "The Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing". Or "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want". Or "The Lord is my Shepherd, I have all that I need". Or "The Lord is my Shepherd [to feed, to guide and shield me], I shall not want"
Father, thank You for Your Word, the written Word, which has been studied, researched, interpreted by people over the centuries. The depth of meaning is so great and so valuable that layer after layer has been revealed to us by Your Spirit, but the essential Truth does not change: the Lord is my Shepherd
When I sang this as a child at school I did understand the meaning or the relevance to my life, but when I came to know Jesus, the Word made flesh, I realised I was conforming to the pattern of the world and therefore needed to be transformed by the renewing of my mind
Thank You that I have now, 'certainly changed my tune' to one that worships, including Psalm 23
Thank You! I know You are my Shepherd

Wednesday 21st July

Heavenly Father, thank You that as we travel through life You know everything about us
You know exactly where we are on the road, in the same way that You knew an important Ethiopian official in charge of all the treasury of the queen of the Ethiopians was on the desert road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza, so You were able to send Philip to meet with him, listen to him, speak to him, and baptise him
You know where each of us is on the road to recovery in the difficult days in which we live. Each of us has suffered in different ways, each of our experiences has been unique, and so each of us needs time to rest, recover, restore, recuperate, recharge, and return to life in this different world that now faces us
The speed of recovery is different for each of us and so in Your love, care and compassion You encourage each one of us individually each step along the path
Jesus dealt with each person individually. He spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and put it on a man's eyes and told him, "Go, wash in the Pool of Siloam" and the man went home seeing
Jesus said to a paralysed man, lying on a mat, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven". And then told him, "Get up, take your mat and go home." Jesus knew everything the man needed to be restored
Lord Jesus, help us to hear Your voice as You guide us on the road to recovery until you bring us home. Strengthen, encourage, lift, and restore us so we may testify to Your goodness to those we meet on the road
songs for today:
The Lord is my Shepherd (You restore my soul)
O My Soul Arise and Bless Your Maker

Tuesday 20th July

Heavenly Father, the Bible tells us this about Your Spirit, "The Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline"
An earlier translation records the same passage as, "God hath not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and a sound mind". We are not to be timid or fearful, for the Holy Spirit gives us power and love and self-discipline through a sound mind
And yet Jesus also said, "I AM sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves". But we are also given an amazing promise, "The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged"
In the last year we have been encouraged to stay at home, to work from home and been discouraged from going out, from meeting other people; so where do we stand now? What do we do now?
Perhaps we need to remember all of the above? As well as giving us the Keys to the Kingdom, You have provided this combination lock: "Whether You turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the Way; walk in it'". We must not be timid or afraid, but we must be cautious, shrewd, sensible, but not discouraged
You love us so much You came to the earth. Perhaps the virus comes only to steal and kill and destroy, but Jesus came so  that "they (we) may have life, and have it to the full"
Father, as we venture out, guide our feet
songs for today:
Though I feel afraid of territory unknown
Be not afraid
Guide me O Thou Great Jehovah

Monday 19th July

Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus, the Son of God and the Son of Man, God in the flesh
Thank You that people at the time could see Jesus, touch Jesus, hear His words. Jesus knew what people were thinking, but often people did not fully understand what Jesus was saying, let alone what He was thinking
Thank You for the physical appearance of God, You, as a man. But Jesus told the disciples it would be better for them if He returned to Heaven because then You would send the Holy Spirit. When that happened Jesus would no longer be ‘in the flesh’ but would live inside of us, knowing our thoughts, yes, but also the Spirit would reveal His thoughts to us! We would have the mind of Christ
As a man Jesus could not engage with us at the level of thought, that is why it is better that the Holy Spirit has come. Jesus said, "But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the Truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears..."
So now, today, at this very minute, the Holy Spirit is right here with us. With only a thought, He can speak life, hope, strength, joy, and encouragement to us and over us
As we read Your Word the Holy Spirit can reveal the Truth that is within the scripture, explaining what it means
As we pray the Holy Spirit knows "even the deep things of God" so "what no eye has seen, what no ear has heard and what no human mind has conceived... these are the things God has revealed to us by His Spirit". Wonderful God
songs for today:
Holy Spirit You are welcome here
Holy Spirit, we welcome You
