Heavenly Father, in May I was thankful for the ivy I had been able to remove as it had withered when I cut it off from the roots. Well the ivy has started to thrive again and I have been removing it from the wall and fence again
I said then that there would be more work to do digging up the roots and it has proved to be very hard work as the roots go deep and spread far and wide, and the wood of the root is incredibly hard! As I have dug down deeper, below the roots I have unearthed a load of other roots. At some point seeds must have been planted, grown and thrived
I wonder how many seeds are planted in our hearts when we are young? Seeds of love, trust, value, peace, confidence? But also perhaps seeds of hate, fear, suspicion, worry, racism? Those seeds lie dormant until something happens to provoke them and then the fruit appears. We have a reaction but we don't know where it stems from, good or bad we have little control as it is rooted in, and flows from, our heart
The Montagues and Capulets hate each other, but then Romeo and Juliet meet and find love. Finding the roots in our heart needs a great deal of digging, and it can be a painful experience, but it is worth it!
Thank You that You are the Gardener and You can dig out bad roots so they wither and die, like the fig tree Jesus cursed!
Holy Spirit, may I be rooted and established in love, so I am strengthened in my inner being with Jesus' love and power, throwing off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles

Heavenly Father, a few years ago it was quite common to see people wearing a rubber band around their wrist with the letters 'WWJD", meaning, 'What Would Jesus Do'
I suppose that, in a way, this is following Your instruction, "These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts... Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates". Wearing a cross is a similar reminder or having objects about the house
Next to my desk I have, "The joy of the Lord is my strength," in a cross-stitch. On my mantelshelf I have a frame with the words, "Nothing in all creation can separate us from God's love in Christ"
I was walking yesterday and the letters 'WJDT' come into my mind, 'Would Jesus Do That?' quickly followed by 'WJST?' meaning, 'Would Jesus Say That?' If the answer to either question is "No, He wouldn't" then I may quickly ask, "WWJD?"
The Bible verse in today's devotional read, "Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools." Perhaps 'WJDT' and 'WJST' and 'WWJD' are as relevant today as ever!
I suppose I might have a knee-jerk reaction, but that is rarely wise. I remember being told, "Count to ten before opening your mouth!" I might say, "It's just the way I am!" but I know I am not the way I should be. "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind". So, "Help! WWJD?"

Friday 15th October
Heavenly Father, I know I will never fully grasp the depth of Your love for me. I know I will never fully understand how what Jesus accomplished on the cross over 2,000 years ago is still having an impact on my life today! It is a mystery to me!
Or how His sacrifice is still impacting the whole world today. I guess there are many things in the world that I don't understand but I know that they work!
I often find myself turning to songs to help me understand myself and the world around me: "I don't know why, I can't see how, Your precious blood could cleanse me now..." Impossible to understand, but wonderful, especially: "when all this time I've lived a lie, with no excuse, no alibi..."
Today, Your precious blood still cleanses me, despite all I do and say and think that falls short of perfection, way short! But You never fall short! "All I know is I find mercy, all my shame You take from me. All I know, Your cross has power, and the blood You shed cleanses me"
Thank You for the mystery of faith! "This mystery is that through the Gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus"
I am an heir to all that Jesus promised! Eternal life. His Spirit! "The Spirit God gives us, does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline". "it's way beyond what I can see how anyone could die for me. So undeserved this, precious grace; You've won my heart, I'll seek Your face"
Thank You Jesus, for all You have done

Heavenly Father, I wonder how many people have experienced the feeling of having been 'dumped'?
For whatever reason someone has decided to end a relationship, it may be they have moved on and found another love, or they have discovered something they don't like, or a sin has come to light, an infidelity, an indiscretion, a secret affair. Perhaps love has simply died
Whatever the reason, the end comes and a person is 'dumped'. I wonder how many people keep hidden their true selves, from their partner, their family, their church for fear that 'if the truth were known,' they would be 'dumped'?
What a great, amazing God You are! "All my longings lie open before You, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from You". I have no secrets from You. "You, God, know my folly; my guilt is not hidden from You". I have no secrets from You. "Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid before the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account"
I have no secrets hidden from You. You know everything about me, and would have every right to 'dump' me, but You don't. "The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love". What a great, amazing God You are! "The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion, and sin"
My wickedness, rebellion and sin were paid for on the cross, so I am never 'dumped'. Thank You, Jesus

Heavenly Father, thank You for caring about us. Long ago King David wrote and sang, "What is mankind that You are mindful of them, human beings that You care for them?"
In another Psalm he writes, "Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken". St Peter echoes these words when he writes of Jesus, "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you"
The word cast might mean to throw out, like a net over the sea, or to spread seed over a field, but could also mean to hurl, like a spear. Another use of the word is to drop, like dropping an anchor. Sometimes we say to someone who is struggling with something, "Let it go" or we might tell them to "Drop it"
Is this what you want us to do? When we are anxious, struggling with something, You want us to simply drop it, let it go, because the burden is so heavy; too much to carry, too heavy to fling or throw or hurl
Thank You for caring about every detail of our lives and telling us we can cast our cares on You, that we can cast our anxieties on Jesus
Thank You that when trust in Your promise You are glorified
Thank You that Jesus took all our sin and shame, all our burdens on the cross, and glorified Your Holy Name on that cross
Thank You that when I am weary and heavy laden I can come to Jesus and He will give me rest
Thank You that nothing is hidden from You, that You know me, and still You love me. Lord, I give it all to You today; I let it go

Heavenly Father, when we see something particularly upsetting we may say it was 'gut wrenching'. If we witness something horrible, even horrific, we may say it was 'stomach churning'. When we prepare to face something testing, when we are nervous or excited we may get a fluttering feeling in our stomach, often referred to as 'butterflies'
In each case the stomach is the place where the reaction occurs, the brain sends a message, a nerve is stimulated and the gut reacts. Someone who stands firm in difficult circumstances is often described as 'gutsy'. Someone who shrinks in fear may be described as 'gutless'. When we talk about the heart it is often the gut that shows our true feelings
Even when we go to meet someone we love, when we fall in love, it is the gut that is affected; often lovers cannot eat, they may even feel sick! I remember reading years ago that an Everton goalkeeper, Gordon West, used be sick before a match because of nerves. Other ways our bodies may react? Our hands tremble, we go weak at the knees, we go 'as white as a sheet'
Father, help me to overcome my weakness. "Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; say to those with fearful hearts, 'Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, He will come with vengeance; with divine retribution He will come to save you' "
"Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the Way everlasting"

Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus, my Lord and Saviour. St Paul tells us: "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved”. Is just saying the words enough?
People may say the words in a mocking tone, would they be saved? Of course not! This has to be a sincere statement, not flippant, not thoughtless, not an easy option, not a 'tick the box' mentality. St Paul continues, "For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved". It is what comes from the heart that matters, not just what comes from the mouth
Jesus said, "God is Spirit, and His worshippers must worship in Spirit and in Truth". In order to worship You I need Your Spirit and in order to understand Spiritual Truth I again need Your Spirit: "The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit"
Help me to be continually filled with Your Spirit so I can continually declare, "Jesus is Lord" from my heart and with my mouth! Then I will know the Truth and the Truth will set me free. "I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, 'Jesus be cursed' and no one can say 'Jesus is Lord' except by the Holy Spirit"
Father, touch hearts today, fill people with Your Spirit so they can say, "Jesus is Lord!" and be saved
