Rev Grant Bolton-Debbage
Assistant Curate, Great Yarmouth Ministry Team
It is a wonderful joy to be in the business of showing the people of Great Yarmouth and all her visitors that they are loved. Not loved in a fickle way depending on who they are, what they have or what they do, but truly loved - regardless!
This week I had the task of preaching on Jesus’ great commandments
“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. ’This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets” Matthew 22:36-39
What I realized is that the words 'Love' and 'God' and even 'Yourself' are often ideas that we inherit. That is to say, that many of us have not taken the time to discover what they truly mean for us as individuals; our individual and unique relationship with God as opposed to one that we have inherited via family members, friends and even members of the clergy!
'Love' if we have had warped experiences, how do we know what this amazing love is like?
'Ourselves' we may not really know who we are and subject ourselves to what others think we are rather than who we are in God
Now I know a little more clearly about the task at hand for me in this place as I start my curacy. Giving people the space, time, guidance and prayer to seek and discover who they really are, their relationship with God and the transforming power of real love
