Do this in remembrance of me!
It has occurred to me that the majority of us like, and would like, to be remembered. Perhaps this is the reason as to why we celebrate our birthdays and anniversaries. And it may also go some way to explaining why we are keen not to forget momentous situations that have happened in society and on the world stage! Jesus words 'Do this in remembrance of me' show how significant it is to be able to look back and connect the present with the past
At this time of year there are many things that call us to remember. Remembrance Sunday, Guy Fawkes night, Advent, and the birth of Jesus Christ. But, if we are not careful, we can find ourselves remembering in vain and this can be detrimental to us all. It is always good to re-evaluate what we are commemorating; how we are doing it and why. A good example of this can be seen in Guy Fawkes night. What are we doing and why we are doing it may conjure up many personal and controversial opinions but how we are doing it seems particularly strange and unquestioned with the burning of an effigy?!
In order to remember with authenticity we must continue to ask ourselves the questions what? why? and how? so that we may bring into the present and the future those lessons which need to be learned from the past
What is on your calendar in the last months of 2017, how will you commemorate them and why?
May God’s blessing rest upon us all that we may remember Him in all that we are and in all that we do. Amen
