Shaken Foundations

As infection rates rise again, the north says the local lockdowns aren’t working and more potential restrictions are discussed, it can sound rather glib to say that we don’t need to fear

Do we fear for our health, the lives of elderly relatives? Do we worry about going out, using public transport, meeting other people? Do we fear the loss of our job, reduced hours, a failing business, financial difficulties…? It is natural to have reactions to change, loss and perceived threat. It is right to take precautions, follow guidance and use our common sense to protect ourselves and others

dove leftHowever the current circumstances also raise questions about where we find our security. When long established and seemingly solid institutions, careers, relationships, finance crumble overnight, who do we trust?

Some have always trusted the doctors to have all the answers to our health problems, and much as we appreciate all their efforts, Covid shows that they don’t and can’t know everything!

Some have found security in their bank balance, their work ethic, the salary, their business success. Suddenly these things are no longer so reliable, what may have felt within their control, is now dependent on outside factors, which can change at a frightening speed!

For others sport, such as football, gave a passion that filled the days and gave a sense of belonging, or it may have been theatre, or music events that kept them going. Living for the match, the show, the concert, or even the church gatherings. Now a lot of venues are empty or very different, no more crowds…does that mean life has lost its shine?
In the midst of all these changes, where can we find solid ground?

Jesus tells a story about a foolish man who built his house on the sand and when the rain and the floods came, it was swept away. The wise man built his house on the rock, and although the rain came and the floods came up, the house on the rock stood firm. Jesus said the person who hears his words and does them is like the man who builds his house on the rock (Matthew 7 v 24)

We all experience the rain and floods of life, in fact our circumstances can be challenging, but if our lives are built on someone who doesn’t change, is in control and loves us, then we can stand firm

I have found that in the ups and downs of life, even when I fall, Jesus is there for me, so I can trust Him in whatever life brings!
