What's your jacket worth?

On Tuesday the 26th July 2022, the well-known auction house Sotheby's sold a jacket in America for a staggering £2.3 m. But, as you have probably guessed, it was no ordinary jacket

dove leftBorn in America in January 1930, Edwin Eugene "Buzz" Aldrin along with his astronaut colleague Neil Armstrong, in July 1969 was the first walk on the moon. It was his space jacket, displaying the name tag E Aldrin on the left breast above the Apollo Mission 11 emblem and the American flag on his left shoulder, that has become the most valuable American space artefact ever sold at auction

In our commercially driven, materialistic society, we can easily fall into the trap of knowing the price of most things and the value of very little. So where do our priorities lie; what are we striving to achieve; what is our ambition in life; to get wealthy and take life easy?

It was David in one of his psalms who makes this comment, "If riches increase, do not set your heart on them". His son Solomon was later to write in his 'Proverbs', "There is one who makes himself rich, yet has nothing; and one who makes himself poor, yet has great riches"

I wonder if Paul had these words in mind when he wrote about the Saviour to the church at Corinth; "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich". It was there at the cross that in His poverty He paid the price for our salvation

The psalmist emphasised the cost of redemption when he wrote, "None can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him - for the redemption of the soul is costly". The greatest physical and moral efforts of men and women could never secure salvation and forgiveness for sin

Peter, in his first letter, underlines what it cost the Saviour when he said; "…you were not redeemed with corruptible things like silver or gold,…but with the precious blood of Christ…". The perfect, sinless sacrifice of the Lord Jesus is what secures salvation for us when we trust Him as Saviour

Now comes the challenge; Paul again; "You were bought at a price, therefore glorify God in your body, which is God's"
