A few weeks ago, on a particularly dank and dismal morning, my wife and I were walking in our garden. We noted, dwelling in the gloom of the day, a clump of tulips that changed the whole tone of our vista; the yellows, oranges, and reds, combined on each head, to bring a much needed burst of colour which lifted our spirits. As I reflected on this, the opening four verses of Isaiah 60 came to mind:
[1]"Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you. [2] See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the LORD rises upon you and his glory appears over you. [3] Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. [4]Lift up your eyes and look about you: All assemble and come to you; your sons come from afar, and your daughters are carried on the hip”
 We can all relate to periods of darkness, that threaten to subsume us: for some it will be the worries they have about the ever increasing cost of living, whilst their incomes fail to keep pace; others will fear a further escalation of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, perhaps drawing in the closer involvement of other countries, including our own; or perhaps it is the concern over climate extremes that we have experienced of late, and what that might mean for our children’s and grandchildren’s futures. Regardless though of any gloom that the enemy may seek to envelop us with, we need to keep our eyes and hearts firmly fixed on God’s glory. We need to be anchored in His light, reflecting and carrying His light, as we wait patiently for the fruit of His plans and promises to be worked out in our lives
These verses though are not just about those living in God’s family. This passage stirs our hearts with a longing to see the multitude in our communities who do not yet know God. You perhaps, like me, have family, friends, and neighbours who do not currently have a relationship with our Jesus. Let us pray earnestly that they too will be touched by God’s glory, to walk in the light of His truth, and spend a glorious eternity with Him and His Son
