I love listening to the beautiful song of a blackbird. It simply fills my heart with joy and awe for the Creator God. It catches my attention and makes me pause and listen and just be still in that moment. As Sussex Wildlife Trust puts it:
“The blackbird is undeniably one of our most prolific singers, a bird with a gloriously varied vocal repertoire. Its 'fluted' carefree song, almost in a major key, indisputably ranks it as one of the UK's favourite songsters”

We have a couple of blackbirds nesting in our neighbour’s garden and they love to come for a visit in the morning looking for something to eat

In the evening I hear them singing as the evening sets

dove leftOne evening, just before sunset, I was in the kitchen and I had to stop what I was doing and open my window as I heard the familiar song. I saw a blackbird sitting on top of the tallest tree in my neighbour’s garden. His beautiful song filled the air and even though it was chilly, I had to go outside to capture it on video on my phone

Unfortunately, it wasn’t long until the beautiful song of the blackbird was interrupted by a horrible, loud, intrusive screech of what perhaps was a jackdaw or similar. The blackbird stopped, paused, and continued its song for a few seconds, before making a longer pause and then flying away as the screeching got even more overpowering

I was sad that the beautiful song stopped. I sincerely hope that the blackbird didn’t stop singing because he was intimidated by the screeching of the jackdaw

Can we sometimes be like that blackbird?

We have a beautiful song to proclaim to the world - the Good News about salvation that is found in Christ. However God’s word is not in a mighty wind or fire, earthquake or thunder, but in the still, small voice, a gentle whisper (1 Kings 18). It is not forceful or pushy or intimidating. It gently calls and tells of the great love of the Redeemer

Are we overcome by the loud screeching noise of worldly distractions and propaganda?

Let us not be discouraged, let our lights continue to shine, and our song be heard, fuelled by the love and Spirit of God
