Doing good in difficult times
We live in uncertain political times, where world events and national trials can cause us to worry, get angry, or take a defensive posture towards the life in general. We know that there are difficulties in Ukraine, the Middle East, and even in our own country politicians are struggling to cope with the demands of the health service, climate change, and other things
Whilst things are going on, we can still continue to do good to the people around us that we meet at work, socially, or in our neighbourhood. What we do does make a difference and creates a safe community to live in. Violent crime in the UK is apparently at an all-time low so as a nation we must be doing something right
An example of a person who went through extreme personal and political difficulties but who continued to do good to those around him is a character called Jeremiah whose story is recorded in the old testament of the Bible
Jeremiah is sometimes called the weeping prophet because the Bible records how he expressed his depression and anguish to God. At the most difficult time in his life he was imprisoned at the bottom of a well or cistern with very little light, or food. After he was pulled out and moved to a normal prison King Zedekiah came to see him secretly to ask for advice because he knew that Jeremiah was someone who he could trust
Jeremiah told him how he could save his own life and that of his people from the invading Babylonian army who were attacking at the time. The King swore him to secrecy because he didn’t want anyone to know that he had received this advice. The King ultimately didn’t follow Jeremiah’s advice because he was too frightened of what other people might say or do, but Jeremiah survived the political difficulties and what he said was correct
Jeremiah is an example to us to face our difficulties and our emotions and express these to God, don’t worry too much about what other people think, get past ourselves to help others around us
