Gorleston church celebrating 25th birthday
Cliff Park Community Church is holding a service to celebrate its foundation a quarter of a century ago
The celebration will be held on January 12 at 10.30 am at Cliff Park Ormiston Academy on Kennedy Avenue, Gorleston, NR31 6TA. The Right Reverend Ian Bishop, Bishop of Thetford will be present. The service will commemorate the church becoming an LEP (Local Ecumenical Partnership) 25 years ago, uniting members of the local Baptist and Anglican churches for outreach on the Cliff Park estate
Cliff Park Community Church was planted from Gorleston Baptist Church and the Anglican parish church of St Andrew’s, and was dubbed “a new church for a new millenium” when it launched at the very end of 1999
Founding member, Dorothy McCabe remembers the launch service in December 1999: “George Lings likened it to the birth of a baby – there had been nine months of preparation, and today was a day of joy and celebration and, like a baby, we would start to take small steps forward, gaining confidence. There would, no doubt, be the troublesome twos and tiresome threes, then the teenage years, until we finally matured as an adult and would be strong enough to leave home and start life on our own – a new plant”
Paddy McGlinchey, who was Associate Minster at St Andrew’s at the time recalls: “A key theological starting point…was that a God-shaped church for Cliff Park would be created. We would maintain everything from our traditions that served this aim, but nothing would be included from either tradition that undermined our mission. Hence, we would be an entirely united congregation committed to God’s mission”
Cliff Park Community Church are encouraging people to send their photos and memories from the church’s history, as well as messages. These will either be displayed on the screen or read out during the celebration service. Please also let Tracey Mayne know if you are planning to attend so that sufficient cake is available!
