Stalham church takes carol-singing to local pub
Regulars at the Swan Inn were led in enthusiastic singing of carols by the Baptist church.
Around 80 people were present for the carol-singing at the Swan Inn, which was led by a group from Stalham Baptist Church. The pub was so packed that it was hard to walk through as people engaged enthusiastically with the singing. Readings and prayers were also used. The Swan staff supported by giving out sausage rolls and mince pies
The annual event was started in 2015 by the church’s pastor, Rev Ron Skivington, who wanted the joyful message of Christmas to be taken to more people, beyond the church walls. It has continued every year since, breaking only during the Covid-19 pandemic
Carol-singing in pubs has a long history, particularly during the reformation and Victorian periods when carols were considered by many to be too secular or improper to be sung in church.
