Poppies in Brundall church remember the fallen
A poignant display of poppies featured in this year's Remembrance service at St Laurence Church, Brundall, to remember the 23 soldiers from the village who died in the two world wars
At the outbreak of World War 1 about five hundred people lived in the village of Brundall. Eleven young men who fought in the war never returned home, a further twelve died in WW2. Their names are inscribed in marble memorials within the village church
The poppy displays were crafted by a group which is part of the Community Café run by the church. Additionally, many other members of the village community supplied poppies that they had made at home
Craft group leader, Judith Graham, says “Our weekly meetings provide an opportunity to be creative in a social environment and the poppy display is our first group project. It and has had a bigger impact than we ever imagined"
The poppy display was linked with an exhibition of photos by wildlife photographer Steve Reeves highlighting the beauty of Broadland. Revd. Dave Hanson, Rector of Yare Valley Churches, says “It helps us remember that we enjoy our beautiful environment because others paid the ultimate sacrifice for our benefit. It has been great to see how many people different groups from the village have got behind this project and worked together on this common objective”
