YMCA Norfolk issues Sleep Easy challenge
Teams of work colleagues, community groups and individuals across Norfolk are being challenged to give up their warm bed for one night, brave the cold and sleep outside in a cardboard box to help raise awareness and funding to address the issue of homelessness in the county
YMCA Norfolk is staging its fifth annual Sleep Easy event on Saturday February 1 and is aiming to beat last year’s total of 80 participants who raised a magnificent £17,000
Launching the event, YMCA Norfolk communications and fundraising manager, Susie Knights, said: “We are encouraging local companies and groups to put together a team to take on the charity challenge, joining individual supporters and staff
“Sleep Easy is not an attempt to recreate the sense of danger and isolation faced by many homeless people but to provide an insight into some of the challenges they face. While it will be an eye-opening experience, it will also be an evening of fun and activities through which supporters can make a real difference in the lives of disadvantaged young people
“We would love to have over 100 people involved and we have a brand new venue at the YMCA Sports Centre at Trowse near Norwich. The event will run from 7pm on Saturday February 1st to 7am on Sunday February 2
“All money raised from this event will go towards the work of YMCA Norfolk including the supported accommodation we provide for over 260 people every night who might otherwise be homeless “
One of last year’s participants, Chris Maw, senior partner with PriceWaterhouseCoopers, said: “We think it is very important to help the YMCA in terms of getting people off the streets. This is my first experience of sleeping out rough overnight, but we are not living in the conditions that people on the streets have to endure and it’s only for one night.”
