Friday 11th July
Heavenly Father, I had a thought as I was praying with Jane yesterday: "The Light is all around us". Lord Jesus, how can it be that You go before me, yet You are behind me? How can You be above me and below me. How can You be on my right and my left
King David knew this; he wrote: "You hem me in behind and before, and You lay Your hand upon me". In another Psalm he wrote: "You are my hiding place, You will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance". And David wrote: "If I say, 'Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,' even the darkness will not be dark to You: the night will shine like the day for darkness is as Light to You"
Lord Jesus, You can be all around me because You are the Light of the world. Your Word tells me: "This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is Light; in Him there is no darkness at all". When You took Peter, John, and James with up onto a mountain to pray the appearance of Your face changed and Your clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning
This is how You can be all around me, because You are Light! When I switch on a light at home the light fills the room. There will be shadows cast by furniture and by me, but nowhere is completely dark, nowhere is pitch black. Thank You for Your promise: "The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged"
Even though there may be dark days ahead, You are always there, Your Light always surrounds me, and it is also there in the distance, showing me the Way home. I remember reading once: "When God said 'Let there be Light' Jesus came out of His mouth". That makes sense to me as Jesus is the Word of God

Thursday 10th July
Heavenly Father, I believe and trust in You, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit; One God. I am committed to You and accept You as my God, my only God, forsaking all others. I do this because You are the only true God
You have given me Your Word that there is no other god, there are only false gods, who cannot save me; any other god, if there was even one, I would be a liar. If I submit to any other being, I would be like those Jesus spoke of when He said: "A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah"
I have seen Your sign, the Resurrection of Jesus. Just as Jonah was in the whale for three days so Jesus was in the grave; and just as Jonah was vomited out of the whale, so Jesus walked out of the grave!
It was made clear to us that we should commit only to you. You said: "I AM the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of a land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me"
Thank You that You brought me out of a land of slavery, slavery to sin. Help me never even think of submitting to any other god, who is no god at all. I must remember the example Jesus gave in marriage: "But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart"
Forgive me for ever letting my mind think of being obedient to anyone other than You. Help me to stick to my vows and follow You and Jesus only, led by Your Spirit. Help me to remember that just as a husband looks after and protects his wife, so You look after and protect me. And just as a wife is subject to her husband, so I am subject to You; "to love, honour and obey"
Thank You that You love and honour me. You have declared: "Those who honour me I will honour, but those who despise me will be disdained." Thank You, for being my One and Only God. I love You Lord

Wednesday 9th July
Heavenly Father, I went to bed last night with a blessing I had received: "Most wonderful Tuesday evening. Hope your day is going really well and getting better, may it conclude with laughter, inspiration and pleasant Godly surprises. God bless you! With all the above and far more. Rom 8:37". And I woke up this morning and received a text including: "Have a blessed day" What a great Way to end the day and to begin it!
I begin and end every day, and all throughout the day by being blessed. Rom 8:37 reads: "No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us". A reminder that Your love for us means that we are safe in Your hands and that through You we can face any and every challenge, even death. And to be blessed early in the morning reminds me: "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness"
I heard a line in a TV series I am following at the moment that resonated within me yesterday: "You risk everything with no guarantee. That's what sacrifice is". The characters were talking about loving someone, and the risk that is taken
Lord Jesus, You came into the world, taking the risk that Your love for us would not be reciprocated, and as it turned out it was and it wasn't. There were those who loved You, and became Your disciples, and there were those who didn't, who hated You, despised You and crucified You
I suppose that confessing love always has an element of risk, and it certainly did for Paul, Stephen, and the disciples in the early church. And for those confessing their love for You today, in many places, there is still a huge risk and very often sacrifice. There has always been persecution born out of hatred, and there has always been sacrifice born out of love
Help me to live a life of sacrifice and love today, being a blessing just as I am blessed. As You said, and then demonstrated: "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends". And of course You went the extra mile, laying down Your life for people like me, who was Your enemy. Thank You for Your great compassion and mercy. I can now say "I love You" too

Tuesday 8th July
Heavenly Father, I wonder how many people have given up on Jesus? I wonder how many people have given up on You? I wonder how many people have given up on church? I wonder how many have given up on prayer? I wonder how many people have given up on a Sabbath? And I wonder how many people have given up on life? Given up on hope? See only a bleak future ahead?
Father, Jesus said: "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full". Another translation says: "I AM come that they may have life, and that they might have it more abundantly". And another interpretation says: "I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of"
How long is a full life? How do we measure an abundant life? How can we have a life better than we dream of? Your Word constantly encourages us to not give up. "Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap a harvest, if we do not give up". Your Word encourages us to be patient and wait for You: "But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall soar on wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not be faint"
Keeping going is hard, and we know we will have troubles, but You promise You will strengthen us. A full life, an abundant life, a life better than we dream of, may seem impossible, but You are God of the impossible. And so we mustn't give up on You, Jesus, church, prayer, or life
Even in our suffering, you tell us that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance character; and character hope. "And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us"
Thank You that we can be still and receive Your peace that passes all understanding. And let us never forget eternity waits for us; life in all fullness, abundant life, better than we can ever dream or imagine

Monday 7th July
Heavenly Father, I wonder how often You are disappointed with us? Whether You look at us down here on earth and think of how we could be, should be, so much better at living life to the full. I know You have come to the earth to demonstrate Your love for us and show us how we can live; in close fellowship with You, relying on You for everything
Jesus relied on You. He said: "Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by Himself; He can only do what He sees His Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does". If He relied on You, then how much more do we need to rely on You
Help me to see what You are doing and to do the same thing. You granted every request that Jesus made to You because His motives were born out of love for people. He took nothing for Himself. Your Word tells us: "When you ask you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures"
When King David got things wrong He came to You and asked: "Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your unfailing love; according to Your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin". Not only does he ask to be cleansed but to have a fresh start! "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit in me"
This is what I ask too Lord, create in me a pure heart so that everything I do and everything I ask is with the right motive; that I would do the things that You are doing, just as Jesus did. As David asked, I ask: "Do not cast me from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and grant me a willing spirit to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, so that sinners will turn back to You". I know I was born for greater things. Lord, help me
