Friday  12th September

Heavenly Father, I know that no one else can do the things You do! There is no other god or man who has the strength, might, wisdom,  or power that You do. There is no other god or man who is worthy of all praise and glory and honour and thanks
 
Lord Jesus, You are God and Man, and You deserve everything that God the Father deserves. Your Word tells us: "The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful Word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in Heaven." You are: "at God’s right hand - with angels, authorities and powers in submission" to You. And while You are at the right hand of God You are also "interceding for us"
 
Because You are exalted to the right hand of God, You have received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and have done what the prophet Joel prophesied: “I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days." Because of all this when I am facing difficult circumstances through the storm I stand
 
You have told me You will never leave me nor forsake me so I will be forever with you right through into eternity. This the perfect wisdom of our God, planned from the beginning. Wherever I go, what happens I know You will keep me safe. Even death cannot separate us: "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Thank You Jesus

Thursday  11th September

Heavenly Father, the verse in my devotional this morning was from a Psalm written by King David: "Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord." There are some situations where we can do something ourselves and others where we can do nothing at all
 
If we need a job we can write letters of application and make sure our CV is up to date and well presented. After that we might need to wait for a response. If we want to improve a skill or a talent then we may need to work on it by practice. Over time we wait to see the improvement in our performance or product. If we are ill we may call the doctor, receive medication and take it. Then we wait for improvement. If an operation is needed we wait for the appointment
 
In all of these situations eventually we have to wait, even if we have done all we can. There are some situations where we can do nothing; global economics, political decisions, some medical conditions, in these situations all we can do is watch and wait. David tells us twice in one sentence to: "Wait for the Lord," and sandwiched in between he tells us to: "be strong and take heart"
 
Lord, it is not easy to take heart. I know from experience I cannot tell someone just be more confident. If someone is a bag of nerves before a performance in music telling them to be something they aren't doesn't help. What does help is reminding them where to focus: "think about fingering, think about technique, think about dynamics and the mood or atmosphere one is trying to create, think about these things"
 
Your Word gives us similar advice: "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you." Perhaps this is how we take heart and are strengthened?
 
By looking at Jesus who is all of these things, "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Help me Lord, in my current situation, to wait patiently, to be strong and take heart, to wait for You. Thank You

Wednesday  10th September

Lord Jesus, I'm looking to You today to give me peace. You said: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid"
 
I wonder what is the difference between the peace You give and what the world gives? It is hard to understand Your peace because the Bible tells us this: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus". Your peace passes, or transcends, ALL understanding, which makes it difficult to compare, so I need You to guide me, to teach me
 
What do I think peace is as the world gives? I suppose a world where there is no war, no bombs dropping, no missiles, no threat to our lives. Hmm, I don't think that we have got peace in that way. Perhaps a world where there is no sickness, illness or disease. Nope, that is not happening. A world where everyone has an equal amount of food, housing, welfare, work and money? No chance! So I know that to the world cannot give me peace. Perhaps Your peace not only transcends understanding but also transcends circumstances?
 
So, even though all of the above are going on in the world around me, some very close to home, I can have peace. It is not outside me, obviously, so it must be within me! This is the point where it transcends understanding! With all that is going on in the world, war, sickness, inequality, I can have peace, be at peace, know peace. Can I understand how? No, absolutely not!
 
Do I believe You can deliver on Your promise? Yes, absolutely! You are the Prince of Peace. I don't know how You deliver, but somehow You do. In the middle of a raging storm at sea, You got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. Even now, I am at peace. Thank You

Tuesday  9th September

Heavenly Father, I want to pray today about affairs, and by that I don't mean international affairs, or political matters, I mean infidelity
 
I know that one of the most famous affairs was between King David and Bathsheba. David knew You very well, and the Bible describes him as 'a man after Your own heart.' If this was the case how could he fall into the trap of adultery? And not only that but then try to wriggle out of the problem by manipulating Bathsheba's husband, Uriah, and eventually arranging to have him killed
 
David was supposed to be with his men, engaged in a war, but for some reason he stayed at home. I wonder if that reason was Bathsheba?  And I wonder if Bathsheba bathed in a place where she knew David could see her, and I wonder if David wandered onto his rooftop because he knew what he would see. However this all came about, by design or by coincidence David sending for Bathsheba, having been told she was married, was a deliberate choice. Knowing this didn't stop him, or her
 
I want to pray today for anyone and everyone who finds themselves in this position, whether by design or by coincidence. I guess most affairs start at work or socially, a common interest or hobby. Some may happen between people who are friends already, perhaps going out as couples with their partners. At some point there is a spark of attraction and then, at that point, a decision has to be made, whether to pursue the illicit relationship or not
 
King David and Bathsheba made the wrong choice and suffered for it later. Father, strengthen the resolve of those in this situation to do the right thing and turn away from temptation and remain faithful to their husband or wife, thus avoiding the disastrous consequences that so often ensue
 
You said it in Your commandments, so simple: "Do not commit adultery." So simple, but obviously not so easy, even for a man, or woman, after your own heart. May we hear Your voice and say "Speak Lord, Your servant is listening." And then listen and obey. Thank You

Monday  8th September

Heavenly Father, when we become Your children You give us a new heart. Our new heart gives us a new passion. You said: "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put My Spirit in you and move you to follow My decrees and be careful to keep My laws"
 
Paul certainly had a great desire to keep Your decrees and Your laws, but went about it totally the wrong way, even to the point of persecuting Christians. But after meeting Jesus on the road to Damascus, You gave him a new heart and a passion for the Gospel, for mission
 
When we first meet with You one of the first things that happens is the recognition that we have got it wrong, about You and about the state that we are in; sinful and wretched. You have already dealt with that on the cross, Jesus having breathed forgiveness over us with His dying breaths. Your love for us is clearly shown as You give us a new heart and a new desire to be obedient to Your Way. There is also a heart to reach out to the lost, gifts that help us to do so
 
 
You also give us a heart for different works that glorify Your Holy Name. For some it is a passion for youth work. For some it is a passion to work with those who have addictions to drugs and alcohol, often the homeless. For some they glorify You through dance, or the waving of flags. Some show their new love is arts and crafts. Some reveal their new heart and mind in poetry, or song writing and leading worship. Some begin to exercise gifts in prayer ministry, healing, words of knowledge, or speaking in tongues. And some become prophets, speaking out Your Word to people which brings them to repentance and salvation
 
When we receive a new heart, a new gift and a new passion, the enemy, who hates all flesh, hates us even more, so we need Your protection. We know we don't fight flesh and blood, our battle is against "the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms"
 
Thank You for providing us with Your armour, an armour like no other: Truth, Righteousness, Peace, Faith, Salvation, and the Spirit. Lord Jesus protect everyone who steps out in faith today. Thank You
