Heavenly Father, help me to be patient as I sit here with You. It is so easy to be rushing off to something else. Even as I sit here with You, talking to You and listening to You, I can be distracted, my mind seems to have a mind of its own; it wanders off so easily. It can be a new gadget to play with, or the gym to get to. (OK, so we both laughed at the idea of the gym!) Even something good, harmless, fun, can be a temptation away from You. Gardening, walking, composing a song, or even building a temple!
Lord Jesus, You told a parable about a man who prepared a banquet, and invited people to attend. “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’ Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.' Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come’"
This is how it can be when we are invited to sit with You and receive our daily bread, to feed on Your Word, receiving Spiritual refreshment, wisdom, knowledge, and guidance. It can even get to the point where we don't sit with You at all. Other things take priority, becoming idols in our lives, and like the people invited to the banquet, we make what seem to be quite valid excuses, and thus our relationship with You becomes distant. Right at the beginning, the temptation that led to the breakdown in our relationship seemed harmless enough, just an apple, but the consequences were disastrous
Lord, help me to resist the temptation to put anything before You. Help me to see what has become 'the apple of my eye' instead of You. There is time enough to do other things after You have finished talking to me, whether by reading Your Word, singing worship songs or through prayer. You are enough for me. You came so that we could have life in abundance, and it starts in Your presence
King David recognised this! "You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand." The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. "Look, I AM coming soon! My reward is with Me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the Tree of Life and may go through the gates into the city." Thank You
Amen
